Am sitting on the small deck of Bruce Chalet, a small hotel just outside of the old town of Shuhe, one of several old, protected towns in this area, the best known and largest of which is Lijiang. I arrived here yesterday on the night train from Kunming -- a good night's sleep in a soft sleeper compartment. There's little of sightseeing value in Kunming proper, so I spent most of my day before boarding the train doing a very long walk from Yuantong, a Buddhist temple north of my hotel, back to my hotel. Along the way, there was the busy pedestrian shopping district, old market, and just the sights of a city new to me. My sleeping compartment companions couldn't speak any English, but we got along fine trading snacks before getting to bed. ... read more

The third week traveling with heavy backpack- I hunger for the blind massage who sees all of my bodily pain. Body sore from carrying my American baggage down meandering cobblestone roads. YET, of course, pain and endurance is all relative as I ponder and see high heel ladies walking seemingly effortlessly over uneven crater like surfaces. Beauty pays comfort a user fee at every street corner... Body sore and I seek out blind massage man down unnamed alley next to the unnamed town square. I stumble upon a woman who is carving a Buddha, Manjushri, Buddha of wisdom, from clay. Her name is Lynn and she just moved to Shuhe with a few friends to start a Buddhist temple. We chat and connect and meet up for dinner. An extended family of 5 Buddhist- Lynn and ... read more

When you think of Lijiang, you think of vanilla milkshakes, thousands of tourists and KTV. But you know what? I really liked it. Although this place is really touristy, I enjoyed being able to sit down in a cafe and eat banana pancakes for breakfast and listen to Jack Johnson- it really was a treat. If you come to Lijiang for nothing else, the scenery here is enough to draw even the most sceptical of people from across the world. From small villages, rice paddies and sky high mountains, Lijiang has it all. On my first day Lijiang after sending a package back home and soaking up some of the atmosphere of the old town, I wandered up to the Black Dragon Pool Lake for one of China's most iconic shots. Check out my photo :-) ... read more

I don't know how it happened – well, not strictly true as I was there I just don't want to recollect it – but somehow we ended up back in pointless boring nothing to do Kunming. Still, before we got there we did have a few great days in Lijiang. We woke up slightly sore from our amazing trek in Tiger Leaping Gorge and headed out to have a good explore of Ljiang Old town. First up was a trip up the Lion Hill. So named as it apparently resembles a sleeping lion – personally I think it was at best a running warthog and more likely a triangle that someone sat on but anyhow – this hill has amazing views over the old town and a pagoda to climb up. We had a few problems ... read more

We went to see a 500 person show at the bottom of Jade Snow Mountain to start the day. Aunt Amana cried at the end of the show. After the show we decided to make a detour to a local village to see if we could find a doctor I heard about. Dr. Ho was international know for being the best at Chineese medicince and he was located in Baishi Village. We told the driver to search it out and he was able to pull us up to the door of his office. Dr Ho is 90 years old and he was still moving fast around his house showing us the articles written about him. Everyone got a special consultation by him to treat our different ailments and he gave us all different herbal medicine to ... read more

We arrived to the Tea Boutique in Lijiang on Monday around 11am. Driving from the airport the new landscape was nothing like we have ever seen. Mountains, rice fields, people working the land, animal life, and lakes. As we drove to Old Town Lijiang where I'll hotel was located we saw cobble stone streets, ancient chineese rooftops, and water ways flowing throught the street. Cars were not allowed in the area. The ethnic group here are called Naxi people. They look like Native Americans and love singing and dancing. Yak meat is everywhere along with a fresh fruit that is being sold by all the vendors. The local people brought all of their custom made goods to sell in Old Town and the group shopped ALL day and night. Again bargain was a must and it ... read more

Day 8 Today was sort of a relaxing day not a real adventurous day. We started it this morning with breakfast at a 5 star hotel. It was somewhat western food not as ethnic. It was kind of nice to have a hard boiled egg and some Chinese ham and some fried rice. So....I guess the only western part was the hard boiled egg...lol Then we had an hour reflexology and foot massage that was much needed! I wish I would have brought a pedometer to see how many miles we walked in our China journey. After that we ate lunch and then shopped for the rest of the day. I have really enjoyed buying gifts for my family! I wanted to talk a little bit about the Naxi people here in Lijiang, There are about ... read more

Day 7 Today's adventure is Snow Mountain, it's tallest peak is 18,000 feet. It is the furthest southern glacier in the Northern hemisphere. In China many people don't have cars and taking the taxi is a very normal thing. But when you need a taxi for a long day you just hire a car and a driver. It is very cheap, I think we paid 150 yuan which is about 30 bucks. Once we got into the park we had to take a bus up the windy road to the gondola chalet. The ride was about 20 min to get to the point where we got off. We noticed a lot of people were buying little cans of oxygen to help with the high altitude. There were a set of stairs that lead to a higher ... read more

Day 5 Traveled all day yesterday about 1500 miles to where we are now. When we left Beijing yesterday morning it was snowing so our flights was delayed for about an hour. We flew to Kunming and then flew to Lijiang. When we arrived we were so impressed with the airport it was really cool! Our cab driver stopped all of the sudden and pulled over because cars are not allowed in the Old City and a bicycle pulled up with a cart and loaded all of our luggage in the back it was quite humorous! We went to dinner and ordered fish and the lady took it out of the water right in front of us and sacked it with a rubber mallet...Talk about fresh lol. Woke up this morning and had a Chinese breakfast ... read more

The next day I slept in, handwashed some clothes, and got a western-style breakfast and coffee combo made by Mama who cooked wearing a tall Chef's hat. I thought it would be best to rest my feet for a day, so I rented quite a nice bike from Baba . The going rate in Lijiang was 15 kuai for the whole day. I rode out of the Old Town by way of some areas that actually didn't have tourist shops! I rode a few miles out to the Suhe Ancient Town which was just a giant gift shop, though it did have a lovely Tibetan building. I still had daylight, so I continued down the road that runs from Lijiang to the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. it was quiet and there were foothills, crop fields, and ... read more
