Background: For centuries China stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the arts and sciences, but in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the country was beset by civil unrest, major famines, military defeats, and foreign occupation. After World War II, the Communists under MAO Zedong established an autocratic socialist system that, while ensuring China's sovereignty, imposed strict controls over everyday life and cost the lives of tens of millions of people. After 1978, his successor DENG Xiaoping and other leaders focused on market-oriented economic development and by 2000 output had quadrupled. For much of the population, living standards have improved dramatically and the room for personal choice has expanded, yet political controls remain tight.

我们去了丽江。We went to Lijiang. Getting to the train station was pretty exciting in itself, they were already preparing for the huge crowds of when millions of people leave the city for spring festival (lantern festival) over only a couple of days. Hopefully I wont be travelling then. Getting into the train I think is most I will ever feel like Harry Potter, it was great going into our little compartment where we would spend the next 25 hours. The beds we chose were soft sleepers, but really it’s the same as any Chinese bed so ve [View Full Entry]

En plus de cela, elle offre une splendide vue sur les toits de la ville, et, [View Full Entry]

The next day was the worst bus ride ever. We had to go up the side of the mountain, which I kept having to convince myself would be worth it. The driver drove fast and the curves had no walls so I thought we were going to fly off the ledge every time we turned. Finally we arrived at the place where we would get on the cable car. On the way up James told me that the mountain we were going to look at had never been climbed all the way to the peak, they call it a virgin peak. [View Full Entry]

The Lijiang airport was tiny, Monica said it reminded her of the Duluth airport, which I have never been to, but it should give some perspective on the size. We took a bus to our hotel, it was dark but we could see big valleys and mountains, and a lot of stars, it was already clear that Lijiang would be very beautiful. When we arrived, men with tricycle trailers took our luggage through the alleyways to our hotel. The area we were in was the old city, it kind of reminded me of the old city in Jerusalem, just random alleys [View Full Entry]

I meant to continue this blog..shortly after the Kunming/Dali entry....but I think I put it off because there were so many pictures to upload. Between the 5 of us, we probably took over 500 pictures! So bear with me, we were there at the beginning of October, I will try and remember all of the happenings. After Brad and Angelina dropped us off at the entrance of the Old City of Lijiang, we walked around trying to find our hotel. We were situated right in the centre of the ancient city. It reminded me of what I pictured of China before [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Lijiang much after dark, and the air was cold, but also crisp and clear. Finally, after 3 months in the smog and city lights, we could see stars. It seemed gorgeous. We checked into our hotels, which were small compounds in the ancient city of Lijiang. Our rooms surrounded a courtyard, and they were fully equipped with squatty potties, but were missing heat. It was freezing in our room, especially at night, but we had heating blankets, which were lifesavers. During the first day in Lijiang, we attended a lecture on Dongba culture, which is a culture that [View Full Entry]

Ni Hao from Lijiang! We have spent the last 7 days relaxing in the quaint ancient old town of Lijiang, one of Yunnan provinces most prized locations. We left Lhasa on 14th by air, managing to navigate two entire airports (lhasa and Chengdu) by ourselves and end up with luggage at the other end, we were very proud of ourselves :) Arriving in the late evening, we met our host for our stay, one Mama Naxi. We were greeted with a 'Hello, you chicken' (check in), and were lead into the main dining room where a seige between Mama's six pets [View Full Entry]

Today was a busy one but GREAT and made the trip to Lijiang worthwhile... We went to the Black Dragon Pond today and again no-one spoke English. To get into the place we had to pay $80¥/$15AU each which is only payable for non-residents of which really we are the only ones in Lijiang!!! The place has a huge lake, bridge, beautiful buildings, waterfall and gardens. You could spend all day there wandering but we didn't have that long to spare. We then went back to the hotel, shared some fried rice from room service as we were now in a [View Full Entry]

Day 10 - Lijiang Old Town Asia » China » Yunnan » Lijiang
Today we had a late start as we had a restless night last night. Our hotel room is just amazing but it was extremely hot in here. We both woke at 1am and tried every setting on the air-con and thought we had it figured and went to sleep. Didn't get a lot though as when we woke in the morning it was just as hot. Luckily the settings are fixed as the cleaner helped us and we are now comfortable. We had our first breakfast this morning, again not as good as Beijing but still nice. We went back to [View Full Entry]

Day 9 - Arrived at Lijiang Asia » China » Yunnan » Lijiang
We have spent the day in transit today and it has been very draining... We left our hotel in Xi'an this morning very early and went to the airport and caught our flight right on time to Kunming which was a 2hr flight. A bit of turbulance and not the nicest landing but we made it. We then had to wait 4 hours for our connected flight to Lijiang due to a delay. It was very boring - there is nothing to do at the airport but sit and wait. We finally got on the flight to Lijiang which is only [View Full Entry]
