I said on Monday it was going to be one of those weeks and it sure is!!! When starting at a new school, be sure to get a card with name and address on.......... My taxi did not turn up this morning for the school run. So I got reception to get me a taxi - so far so good. Once in the taxi, I told driver where we wanted to go - a blank look from driver! So Matthew showed the driver his school uniform - still a blank look so I ran back into reception and told the lady where I wanted to go she then explained to the doorman who then explained to the driver!!! It was like Chinese whispers!!! 45mins late but we made it to school!!!! It is a good job ... read more

I think it is going to be one of those days or even weeks! Here are a couple of things that I would not have thought of it hadn't happened today!!! I thought I would adventure out today after the school run without my driver as I know he is quite busy so I got him to drop me off at a shopping Mall that I knew quite well to buy the only best bread we can find in Teda then I would get a taxi to a supermarket Tesco (same as UK) which I probably could walk but the roads are soooooo busy early in the morning, safer to get taxi. Then from Tesco it is about a 10-15min walk back to apartment. Easy.............. NO NO NO..........That would be easy! My driver dropped me and ... read more

It has been a really busy first week in China! We went for our medical on Monday.........NEVER AGAIN! It was not an experience I would like to do again. We had a nice Chinese lady that came with us to help fill out all of the many forms. Our fantastic driver also came with us to help. It was a busy waiting room, we felt and looked like a fish out of water!! Then we followed the lady out to a very long and busy corridor, she pointed to me to enter a room. I went in and was faced with my worst fear! Blood test room was first. The lady did not look gentle and proved me right! She couldn't find my veins and ended up just sticking needle in after a few hard slaps ... read more

Hello from china!!! We made the very long trip to Teda, China............after an hour drive to LHR airport then we sat on the runway for an hour so took off late, in the air for 9 & half hours followed by an extra half an hour at Beijing to hunt for Williams pushchair then a 2 hour drive to hotel........I feel tired just writing this!!! I have to say, Matthew was fantastic on the plane. he sat nicely and played his DS game and had a few hours sleep. this made a BIG difference to him compared to last time. William......you have to just love him!! 2 days before we fly, he comes out in a nice cough and cold, all snotty and grotty. Just after we take off he has a major coughing fit and ... read more

My first experience with China came early in my career when I landed the opportunity to oversee a field trial on a Chinese owned and operated platform somewhere in Bohai Bay. I was so excited for this project. Not only had I never been to Asia before, I had just started studying Mandarin a few months earlier, so it would be a great chance to put it to use. I probably prepped for six months in advance; analyzing production data, ordering chemicals and equipment, coordinating dates with the customer and my local team. Finally, all was in order, and I jumped on a plane for Beijing. I remember arriving around midnight and sitting in the backseat of my driver’s car and just soaking everything in. I was in China; this mysterious, Communist party-led, emerging global superpower. ... read more

The ferry option from South Korea to China was so easy and really classy (may be exaggerating on the latter). I met Monica and Philip straight away. It was quiet easy to figure out that all three of us were back-packing. It was a real laugh to meet some Koreans a ... read more

The area I am living in is perhaps not typical of the rest of the country, but then again China is a very big country. I am told that this area, called TEDA (Technological Development Area), had very little here 15 years ago. Now it is full of wide boulevards and modern looking high-rises. And they are throwing up more at breakneck speed judging by the surplus of construction sites and scaffolded buildings rising up everywhere you look. This would be a good area to invest in real estate as apparently the prices have been doubling every 3 or 4 years. It also does not have the typical street food vendors so common in Asian cities (which is too bad because there is no selection of supercheap, convenient food near us). Apparently the authorities have decided ... read more

According to the calendar on my wall, I have 17 days left in China. Three more weeks till I come home! Adjusting will be strange... at first I will wake up on my Mom's couch surprised that I'm not in Tianjin. Maybe this will happen a few times, and then after a while it while all seem like a dream, like none of this ever happened at all. Then I'll look over and see some small trinket which will remind me that his trip actually did happen, much like the little' boy's bell in the Polar Express. In my case, it will be a magnetic Tsingdao beer bottle-shaped bottle opener mounted on the fridge (*jingle*jingle*). I bought it in Qingdao, and I think it's one of my favorite things that I bought here, if for nothing ... read more
