The landscape around the road from Chengdu to Kangdling is astonishing. It is really full of greens, dense of lively vegetation, with a lot of fruit trees. There is a river that goes all the way along next to you. Then the view changes dramatically in the way up going to Tangon where there the grassland and the yuks invade the whole view and you are allowed to see ones in a while light green mountains with the big Tibetan letters written on the land Om Mani Padme Hum.Which is their main sacred and more repetitive mantra. Tagong is a small village in the middle of the mountains. With traditional Tibetan constructions made of stones and wood and some colors around the windows. There are many places to taste their traditional drink: a butter milk tea. ... read more

After we left Gonga Shan we left at 6 in the morning to hike out 4 hours. We then got picked up by our faithful minivan driver in the middle of nowhere. We were then whisked 6 hours to Tagong on through backroads and even one field path. Once in Tagong we met Djorge who took our group and a group of french and spanish out to where we hoped on horses. These horses were not as docile as our previous encounters. Many of the French and Spanish were not even as seasoned as Keren and I now so we spent what could have been a much shorter ride waiting for the group of now 14 to do an amoeba dance across the plateau from Tagong to the festival. Once there the rain had begun so ... read more

Well, Ryan and Nick had actually already just arrived when I finished my last entry, but I didn't hear them come into the hostel. But I found out that Joon had not yet arrived, and we weren't sure when he would. Apparently he was coming from Bangkok and decided not to take that 3am flight that I had taken the day before. Instead, we eventually found out from his girlfriend (since we couldn't get in touch with him) that he would be arriving the next afternoon. Discouraged at first, we considered our options. Should we take off the next morning for Kangding and meet him there, or wait in Chengdu? Over an amazing hotpot dinner we decided to take a day trip to Qingcheng Shan (pronounced "Ching Chung Shahn"), and do some hiking around on that ... read more
