Keren (the turtle) and Steve (the bear) just got married and are getting ready to set off for a great journey to the other side of the world. Our first stop will be in China where we will be teaching English for a year. We wanted to make this site for our friends and family so we can share our experiences and pictures from exotic places. Enjoy!!

Songs I had never heard them sing. As we stepped back from our daily routines the light shone more brightly in the student's eyes. Mine had experienced their first foreign teacher. For many the first foreigner they had ever seen. Keren's had had many before but upon leaving shared with her that she had been their favorite. Through their teenage facade she had put her heart out there and gave them all she had and in the end I think they knew that. Mine had not learned that the foreign teachers will come and go like the tide that we are there only for a short while in their long school days. The respite we gave them from their otherwise wrote memorization was not always as welcomed as the known sit and stare blankly method of ... read more

GuangZhou for Zhong Jiu Jie The midautumn moon festival. We are a bit behind on our posts. This one comes from a trip we took to Guangzhou. A port city on the Pearl river delta known to be very much in the import/export business. We spent much of our time walking around the city. Some of our favorites were the herbal medicine streets stretching several blocks of bulk herbs coming and going from China. Guangzhou is also known for its dried foods such as the wall of flattened chickens and dried geckos on a stick. We also took a pearl river cruise at night to see the lights of the city. The pictures are captioned and will now have to suffice for a thousand words.... read more

After we left Gonga Shan we left at 6 in the morning to hike out 4 hours. We then got picked up by our faithful minivan driver in the middle of nowhere. We were then whisked 6 hours to Tagong on through backroads and even one field path. Once in Tagong we met Djorge who took our group and a group of french and spanish out to where we hoped on horses. These horses were not as docile as our previous encounters. Many of the French and Spanish were not even as seasoned as Keren and I now so we spent what could have been a much shorter ride waiting for the group of now 14 to do an amoeba dance across the plateau from Tagong to the festival. Once there the rain had begun so ... read more

We arrived in Kangding Western Sichuan. A beautiful town in the mountains at about 3,200m(10,400ft) above sea level. What was to be only a layover turned out to be a two week excursion. When we attempted to buy bus tickets north westward we were denied. We later found out that tickets were being denied to all westerners. It isn't official that westerners can't travel by bus but they won't sell the tickets to a westerners heading closer to Tibetan areas. We then decided to stay in the cool clear mountain air for a bit before heading back to the heat and smog of Chengdu's 13 million people. The next day we tried to go to Mugecuo or Wild Man Lake sporting hot springs and alpine lakes with possible swimming. So we got a taxi and headed ... read more

We are currently in the town of Kanding in western Sichuan. We are now at about 6,000 feet so the weather is much cooler. We have been wandering around town enjoying the food; bread, cheese and yak along with much needed sleep in a clear air town. Tomorrow we head out on a trek to Gong ga shan for five days. We won't be riding the horses as we did in Songpan but they will be carrying our stuff. After that we are heading over to the Tagong grasslands for a few days and then we will be back here in Kanding where the Zhilam hostel, owned by Americans, gets us pancakes and many other comforts of the West. ... read more

We have been traveling in Sichuan the past few weeks. We are having a wonderful time. Posting pictures and stories has been a challenge. We most recently took a boat to see Leshan the largest buddha in the world and climbed down the "number 1" sacred mountain in China's sichuan province, Emei Shan. We are now posting some photos from our visit to songpan and our previous visit to chengdu last week. More stories and pictures will be added as we have access. We also can't access facebook, youtube or blogspot. So anyone wondering where we are this seems to be the last place we have to post. More to come. ... read more

Life in Jianghua Winding down the semester in Jiang hua. A quick post of pictures. With the frog of the wall, the bearded acupuncturist friend we found. Some students and the life of the silk worm. Many students have families that raise silk worms for their silk and so many bring a few into class for pets. They eat mulberry leaves spin a cocoon of silk and hatch out to be moths. Then they lay eggs hatch and start over. A pretty fun project but it leaves the one mulberry tree on campus a little worn when all those babies hatch hungry. ... read more

Foreign Teacher expo ning Yian. This was a foreign teacher appreciation day for the teachers in our area Yongzhou City. We went to an area called Ning Yian. We were able to see a temple to a sun dynasty emperor, a mountian with etchings from li bai and a giant cave where we watched and did a performance. Everyone was told about the expo the day before or the night before, drove the next morning wandered around Ning Yian in a motorcade because each teacher or set of teachers had their own car and then did a performance with no prior warning. Eh that is the way that things are done here. Short for now we are on the road. ... read more
