So, we all made it one year! YAYYYYYYYYY! It was great to have the gang back together for an impromptu Braai (SA for BBQ), in which we mostly ate vegetables (for the dismay of Amanda) We have had some great times all together and it was great to see us all grow as people and adults and friends!!! img=http://rs473.pbsrc.com/albums/rr97/fitzy90_2008/Mobile%20Uploads/17.pic%20copy.jp... read more

So, at Disney English, we are not allowed to celebrate religious holidays. But we CAN have fun celebrating other types of holidays around the year (usually by crazy dressing up!) Firstly there was Halloween! The craziness of being able to just dress up in anything but our blues may have made some of us go a little overboard, but at least we had a great time doing it! I certainly did!!! img=http://rs473.pbsrc.com/albums/rr97/fitzy90_2008/Mobile%20Uploads/mmexport1431097990808.jpg~320x480 (Dressing up for work) img=http://rs473.pbsrc.com/albums/rr97/fitzy90_2008/Mobile%20Uploads/mmexport1431097984118.jpg~320x480 (Cat and mouse with Lisa) img=http://rs473.pbsrc.com/albums/rr97/fitzy90_2008/Mobile%20Uploads/mmexport1431095400448.jpg~320x480 (Mouse for work) (The mouse a... read more

So let's start with our first picture together at ZSP!!!!!! We were all ill and very jet-lagged (probably all had China belly), but we all went to work with a smile on our faces, having a wonderful time! I remember poor Fergal walking in on all of us ladies singing along to all of the disney songs!!! We have had our ups and downs, but the Disney delights and BBBAM had a magnificent year together, we've stuck through thick and thin, and made amazing and awesome memories together!!!! I remember that you learned quickly (and the hard way), never to use tap water (or even boil it) from the Jingjian Inn! :( Now for our second picture, one at our home when we had finally moved in and settled. We had... read more

The only way I can describe this unique city is by saying that there is not a boring building in site. The architecture and lights create an unbelievable skyline during the day and especially at night. Our hotel is right on The Bund so we are within walking distance from a ton of great restaurants, shops, and nightlife. Our first night we ate at Lost Heaven where we had some delicious Chinese and Tibetan style dishes. The buildings along The Bund are very European in style. In contrast the other side of the river is filled with oriental buildings; this walk incredibly interesting and eye catching. Day 1 and 2 were mainly work days. Class in the morning, and interviews in the afternoon. Our group traveled out to Shanghai University's School of Public Economics while our ... read more

Geo: 31.23, 121.47To arrive in Shanghai at night is to be welcomed by a spectacular display of light and colour. The hour long ride in from the airport was an infinite freeway lined either side by ghostly highrise but then you hit the CBD and the motorway becomes a multi storey monolith that snakes towards and around a city skyline like no other. It felt like we were on a giant life size Disneyland ride. The view from our hotel room was equally inspiring and as the sun rose we could see the city take shape. The blur of the bright orange pollution sky making way to clearer shapes of the riverside lowrise dwarfed by the assortment of the ultramodern, all vying for the title of the tallest building. What a show. Welcome to Shanghai! Our overall ... read more

If I tell you that the city of Shanghai has over 20 million people, which is about 20 times the size of Calgary, you will get an idea of how busy the airport was when we arrived. City noise is acerbated by drivers’ constant use of their car horns and the fact that many people with strident voices feel the need to shout, rather than simply speak. Tour guides mostly use microphones turned up really loud so if you are near one or more of these groups you hear only a constant babble. A visit to the Urban Planning Museum showed just how much the city has changed in the last 30 years and that amount of change is impressive, especially when it involves relocating huge numbers of people. Most live in apartments as few can ... read more

We met our Shanghai guide Agnes in the lobby in the morning for our last full day in China. We’ve had some great guides and Agnes was no exception. She is funny, very experienced and extremely efficient. We drove to the Bund, the city’s original Wall Street of sorts, a mix of beautiful early 20th century neoclassical and art deco buildings lining the Huangpu River. We then walked through the People’s Square heading for Old Town. Like Beijing with its Hutangs, Shanghai also has old neighborhoods scattered amidst modern high rises. We walked through the alleys of Old Town, narrowly escaping being run over by motorcycles, pedicabs and bicycles. We passed many street vendors catering to the cuisines of local residents (fried scorpion anyone?). And as we walked, we are reminded that China is still on ... read more
