Hey everyone! Yay, I managed to write this one on time! One of the reasons I really like living in China is because I spend so much time around the people and surrounded by the culture that I am able notice some of the more subtle cultural changes that I would be lost on a tourist. Vorwort: In letzter Zeit war mein Terminkalender relativ voll, deshalb kommt dieser Eintrag so spät. Viel Spaß beim Lesen! Das chinesische Neujahr kann auf verschiedene Weisen gefeiert werden, doch im Prinzip hat alles einen gewissen Rahmen. Nachmittags, oder auch schon mittags beginnt das New year's eve dinner, bei welchem die jeweilige Familie zusammenkommt. Wie viele Mitglieder zusammen kommen variiert, manchmal nur die der eigenen. Das dinner ist eine symbolische Darstellung des Zusammenkommens und kann sehr lang dauern. Nach Beendigung zieht man, falls man die noch nicht trägt, neue Klamotten an. Neu ist dabei jedem selbst überlassen, manche kaufen neue und manche tragen einfach ihre "gute" Kleidung. Heute bin ich das erste Mal alleine zu meinen Großeltern gelaufen und auch ohne dass ich auf die Karte schauen musste, ich hätte nicht gedacht dass ich das bei meinem Orientierungssinn so schnell schaffe. ;) PS: Schonmal die chinesische Version von "another one bites the dust" gehört? An eine Sache werde ich mich glaube ich nie gewöhnen: Das Autofahren. Ich fahre ja nicht selbst, aber selbst dann komme ich mit weniger als drei Herzinfarkten aus einer Fahrt nicht raus. Gehupt wird als Warnung dass man in eine Roller- oder Menschenherde hineinfährt, oder auch einfach die ganze Zeit und wenn ich über die Straße gehe, wird man von hinten angehupt. Den Einwohnern macht es nichts mehr aus, aber ich musste jetzt schon oft genug denken: "Das. War. Knapp." Aber naja, ich lasse mich rumfahren und hoffe einfach dass keiner merkt, dass ich innerlich alle 5 Minuten am aufschreien bin ;).... read more

The tour guide in Beijing said that ‘Beijing is China today; Shanghai is China - future!’ within moments of arriving I see what she means. We arrived at modern Shanghai Honqiao station and within minutes we were heading towards the centre on the busiest subway system in the world. Our destination for the next five nights, was to be a hotel near Peoples Square, as we would later find out, very convenient for exploring Shanghai. We thought we had booked a hostel, but had been previously bought and renovated by a big chain. The first words from the receptionist was that our room was in use, our tired bodies slumped, ‘so we have upgraded you’, yes-result!
