Siping While fairly large in population (500k-1m) it represents a very poor area of China with near no tourism and I would affectionately refer to it as the 'pigsty of China', having said this the people are very friendly (if not English literate) and everything is fairly cheap. The main shopping area in Siping is the Zhongxing which is 6 floors worth of knock-off dvds and clothes. The dvds are obsenely cheap easily under 50p per season (illegal and downloaded ofc) and everything is barterable even in official looking stores. The main attraction in town is the NetCafe, which is very modern and has plenty of games installed yet is still very cheap at under a pound for 5hrs, its also used as a base camp for the academy students and at weekends theres always afew ... read more

Training Upon arrival at the academy you get the option of 3 different martial art styles Shaolin (Flashy acrobatics with weapons) Baji (Shaolin for people that cant jump) Sanda (Practical fighting, kick-boxing and spend 90% of their time kicking or punching a bag). However you can swap at any time to another style and many students staying for longer periods will do a stint in each. I chose Shaolin as I was reliably informed the teaching there was the best in the academy and it has certainly pleased and impressed me. For my first week I recieved one-on-one training with a lower-master who taught me the basic stretches and the start of the first fist-form, teaching me to the point where I could effectively join in with the rest of the Shaolin group. While very tiring ... read more

Changbai mountain, from Jilin province, border between China and North Korea, famous by the Ginseng and Celestial Lake. This time we went to the northeast of China, one of the main goals was to see the snowing, but by destiny irony, there was no snowing and the south of China, where we were living, had the worst snowstorm in the last 50 years, and when I was in the train from Harbin to Changbai mountain, I just heard the people saying: the south people have no experience to deal with the snowstorm, and we are sending the rescue there. The Changbai mountain is a volcanic mountain at 2744 meters, so there are some hot springs, very pleasant for the cold days of the winter. There is a Celestial Lake, or Heaven Lake, created by eruption of ... read more

Dalin wasn't such a great city for sightseeing, but we did get to eat some great food. We toured around the city and stopped at various places that looked out at some water. I bought a 20 tiered kite which looks awesome when flying. The guy I bought it from let me fly one before. The rest of the time was snapping pics and eating. We were there for a day. Between Dalin and Harbin we took a bus trip to another unnamed city Qu Qu (something.) and stayed overnight. This was a Saturday. When we went for breakfast at 7AM there was no food left! Tons of people had been eating. We could not believe that the food was all gone and we were told to attend breakfast at 7AM. We noticed that the people ... read more

After staying two days in Jilin City (story to be written soon), we decided to hop a bus to nearby Yanji, capital of China's Korean Autonomous Region. Tucked up between Russia and our true motive for going, North Korea, we figured it would be an off the beaten path-type of escape. Almost true... Turns out Yanji is actually a pretty lively city. Much cleaner and newer looking than Beijing, the area's beautiful surroundings also caught us a bit off guard. I would say much of the rolling hills and small rivers resembles a really green Colorado. Gorgeous and a perfect climate. Our first morning here, we had little idea what to do first. The Lonely Planet guide for the area is a bit slim, though a small map of the greater Jilin province gave us our ... read more

Changchun to Benxi Asia » China » Dongbei » Changchun By frequentflyerJune 6th 2007 After more driving this morning we get to today's highlight - Benxi Cave, with the longest underground river in China, 5th longest in the world. It's about 5km long, average depth of 2m and deepest is 7m. Average water temperature is 0C, and the fish/loach in the river has essentially lost functional use of its eyes because of the complete darkness. There are many stalactites in the cave, many with shapes that resemble various objects, including elephant, leaning tower etc. The stalactites grow very slowly, at a rate of 1mm/100 years. Some tourists think that they... read more

Today is probably the highlight of my trip. We drove to Changbaishan, literally translated as "forever white mountain". It is generally acknowledged as the most famous mountain in the NE. The mountain rises in the southeast of Jilin province, or the northern part of Jilin's Antu County, and gradually extends southwards towards the North Korean border. It is the origin of the Manchu people. 6 of its peaks are in China, 7 in North Korea, and 3 shared by the two countries. The highest peak is named Baiyuan peak "white clound peak", and rises 2691m above sea level. It got its name from the white volcanic ashes and its year-round snow cap. It is a dormant volcano. It has erupted 3 times, the last time in 1702. I was somewhat concerned because it rained heavily ... read more

This morning's first stop was Pu Yi, the last Chinese emperor's palace or residence in Changchun. He lasted a total of 3 years as the ruler of China. He was only 3 years old when crowned as the emperor. He was scared and cried as he sat on the throne. It was said that in an effort to comfort him the words "it's all going to be over soon" was used. The Qing dynasty was soon over too. Japan occupied China for 14 years starting in the NE on Sept 18 1931. Japan knew that there were still Qing loyalists in the NE. In order to appear legitimate, they installed Pu Yi as a puppet emperor and housed him here. He had many firsts as a Chinese emperor. First to know how to played golf ... read more

This morning I visited the Imperial Palace of the Qing dynasty in Shenyang. The Qing Dynasty was the second time when the whole of China was ruled by foreigners, the Manchu. The first time was during the Yuan Dynasty when China was controlled by the Mongols. The Qing Dynasty lasted from 1644-1911 A.D. The Palace is much smaller than the one in Beijing, about 1/12 the size, and was used before defeating the Ming dynasty. There didn't used to be any trees within the palace because of fear of fire. Large vats are everywhere as source water to fight fire when one did arise. Other than the classic architecture and rich history, one of the most interesting item inside the palace is a smokestack that has 11 levels, exactly 267 bricks, with 3 on top. ... read more
