As it turns out, strangely enough, my days off here are exactly the same days off that i had back at home. Around the world mondays and tuedays seem to be the days that i was given to relax and enjoy the world. This last "weekend" i decided it was about time i did some adventuring around china and booked a ticket to see the great wall. The place i picked was Shan Hai guan, a place best known for where the wall meets the sea. I had seen this on the TV show ''An idiot abroad"where carl goes to china. I had a desire to walk in this awkward man's footsteps. I got the first ticket i could get which was a "hard sleeper'' train there, at midnight, and a ''hard seat'' train back and ... read more

So for the last two day me and all the people from my work had to go on a work retreat. Five minutes after teaching my last class of the day we were shoved onto two buses and hurtled into the chinese countryside. This was my first real taste of the what rural china is capable of. Rolling fields as far as you can see dotted with houses and farms. In the distance you see large processing buildings but all in all it is peacful and quiet. We got off the bus to fireworks exploding all around us and people screamiing and music blaring. The "camp"were we were staying turned out to be a "motel 8"style building that surrounded a courtyard with forest and fields stretching on out behind it. There was drinking, a talent show, ... read more

Just a quick update. I hope everyone has enjoyed my periodic updates, infrequent as they may be. I have 4 weeks of teaching left here in China. For anyone considering a trip to teach in China. I say go for it. There will be many good days, and a few rough ones. The experience will open your eyes to the world outside your country. There are many great people here, and you learn to relax and adapt to surprises. Well either you learn to deal with surprises or your go crazy. My plan is a flight to California to visit friends, a return to my home state of Michigan, and then graduate school. Just hoping I get an acceptance letter soon! There will be one or 2 more updates, before this is over.... read more

Summer 2010 and I learned my fiance and I would have to travel to her home province of Jilin to be married. Prior to this I had never heard anything about Changchun, I didn't recognize the name, didn't recall anything from travel guides, books or movies. A friend back home told me it was the biggest city I had never heard about. He was right. Changchun is massive! I fully realized it the first day we took a cab from roughly one end of the city to the next and what felt like a one hour drive past seemingly endless sections of city. We were there in late August to early June and actually we were happy to find a fairly new, modern, 'western style' hotel just about a block away from the main train station ... read more

We took a high speed train from Harbin to Changchun and spent a day visiting the Puppet Regime Imperial Palace Museum which the last Emperor of China, Puyi, was made Emperor of the Japanese-controlled state of Munchukuo. Puyi had stayed there from 1934 till end of World War II in 1945. This museum tells trace life and events during this years he was in the palace. There is another museum within the compound about the Japanese Occupation of North East China. On the next day, we took a 30mins flight to Changbaishan and visited the north part of the mountain. There are shuttle buses to take you to the different scenic areas but you have to pay additional tickets to reach the 2600m peak by jeeps. A nice place but requires a lot of bargaining skills ... read more

Wednesday the 16th was a festival holiday in China for the Dragon Boat Festival. The owners of the Woodland Youth Hostel invited us for lunch at their parents house in the back streets of Baihe. Luckily Helena and Lynn teach English at school, so conversation wasn't to bad. We ate homemade Dumplings and boiled eggs from their hens, they also have a superb veg garden and a large guard dog!Our legs were sore from sitting on the floor called a Kung. Thank you Zheng Family for your hospitality. ... read more

We travelled through lovely countryside full of rolling forests to arrive in Baihe from Tonhgua.Baihe would be our base for exploring the Changbaishan National Park famous for Heaven Lake which shares its border of Korea and is at 2100 m and 373m deep, and supposedly has a monster like our Loch Ness!. The town is about 20km from the nearest Park gate and is the closest town to the park, which is 240,000 Hectares. We were only going to stay 3 nights but had to settle for 5 nights 6 days as we couldn't get a sleeper ticket out until the 16th because its the Dragon Boat Festival in China this week and everyone takes 3 days off.Our digs for the stay was at the Woodlands Youth Hostel which has been very enjoyable. The familiy that runs the ... read more

A 10.30 sleeper from Beijing to Shenyang capital of Liaoning province, arrived at 7.00am and tried to hail 6 taxis without success. None of them would take us to the Shenyang YH, don't know why, maybe language barrier. We ended up walking most of the way. Stayed 3 nights and visited the Imperial Palace,Botanical gardens and on the 3rd day Beiling Park to the North Tomb. We left again by train, early 7am,crossing into Tongue 160 km north in the province of Jilin. One night in a chain cheapy and another train to our main destination for the next 5 days Baihe which is only 200km from Vladivostok. Shenyang is not geared up for the tourists like Beijing, but the sites were the only highlight of our stay there. Oh and the Lao Bian Dumpling Restaurant which has been open ... read more

We got a puppy!!! Her name is Xiao Jin (it means little gold in Chinese) and she was born on April 7th. She's a golden retriever and absolutely adorable. We will, of course, be taking her home with us in August. She will ride in the cargo --not with the luggage in a separate compartment that will be the same temp as the passenger area. The US only requires that she has rabies vaccination, but we will be getting most of her shots done here, because it's much MUCH cheaper. We've had her for 3 weeks, and we've potty trained her to go on paper. We took her for a walk to culture square--it was her first time out of the house and on a leash and she loved it! We're coming home on the 26th ... read more
