Saturday the April 18th we received a 9am phone call from an echo outside our window. Our foreign affairs officer Solar, standing outside our door wanted to take us for an outing. We have now learned an outing can be anything from mountain climbing to a fancy dinner. We were not to be let down. We were hustled out the door grabbing what we thought we might need and changing into what we thought might be appropriate. We waited half an hour for our mini van to arrive and hopped in. Off we go…one block later we stopped. Another teacher came out, ok I thought. Then the other teachers got out of the mini van. I assumed to say hello. We all piled out onto the sidewalk. An hour later we got into the school car ... read more

Just a few pictures from a BBQ we had a few weeks back. Our students on the Australian programme finished their exams, so we went to the Botanical Gardens to have a BBQ and see the cherry blossom. Most of my teaching this year, especially Maths teaching, has been centred around these students, so it was nice to see them off. The teaching load has reduced since then which has also been a relief. Seeing the chinese version of a BBQ was interesting. Rather than the organised manner of a western BBQ, this was is more of a complete free-for-all. Skewers everywhere, things getting burned (food or fingers) - generally complete carnage. All good fun but they're going to have to practise their BBQing skills for Oz. Only a few more weeks left of actual teaching ... read more

Zhang Jia Jie, a national park from Hunan province, famous by numerous sharp mountains, it also was the background scene of film Avatar(2009), visiting there is better after a little rain, because that will cause the mist and make the scene much more beautiful, just like the paradise in the Chinese concept. Stay a night in the park is a better option, but the condition there is quite simple, food and accommodation, but it won't be a problem for backpacker for sure. The park is huge, there is top and bottom part, a river surrounding the mountain is the bottom part, and view of the from mountain mist paradise is the top part, also the villages for the accommodation, there are the internal bus for the locomotion, but the elevator on the cliff is the sight, ... read more

Steve and I have been teaching for 3 weeks now in Jiang Hua. It's not the original town we thought we were going to, but it's not too far away from Jiang Yong. Jiang Hua is a small city located in southern Hunan province and it's a short walk to the outer edge of the city where there are green rocky hills, lowland farms growing rice, vegetables, greens, and mushrooms, and a large silty river. The weather seems to change very quickly at least at this time of year. In our first three weeks here it's changed from warm and humid to very chilly, to rainy, to chilly, to warm, to cold, to rainy, to cold and sunny and then it was a nice warm sunny day today. I think these very quick changes in weather ... read more

Wow. So what a holiday i've had. I've spent New Years in Hawaii, with friends, without friends (mostly without friends KUKU! :( ) But this year was bar none the best holidays i've ever had. Amazing new friends, amazing new girlfriend (yeah yeah i'm sure you all heard from someone by now.) and an amazing new country. First off let me explain something. Christmas is NOT a holiday that is recognized by the Chinese government. More and more people are celebrating it every year, but it is not a national holiday. That being said.....students still had school. But I didn't. Why? Because i'm white. Yeah there are racists even in China, so I was banned from school on this day. So I had only one day off which was cool because since everyone else still had ... read more

You must take a train to Huaihua, the city nearby Fenghuang, then you must go to the bus station take a bus(40RMB) to Fenghuang, about 2 hour. Another choice is take a taxi to go there price around 100 RMB. Hostel not so very nice but cheap, only 80 RMB per nice. A lot of hostel and travel facility are provide for traveller, also foreigner. Unfortunately, there are only a few group in that time. May be, it's an off season. ... read more

Haven't been doing much since we came home from HK. Chillin' mostly and being shocked at Christmas being 10 days away. Students keep asking what i'm doing for Christmas and i'm sure none of you care. But for the sake of writing something let me tell you what i'm doing. Nothing. I only have 1 day holiday (Christmas Day) and that isn't enough time to umm......do anything at all.... the Headmaster told the FAO's to treat us as part of their families, so he's paying for a huge meal for us. The FAO's have also expressed interest in throwing a party w/ all the students. I have no idea how that could ever pan out, but I wish them luck. Still no word on when Spring Festival starts for us. The FAO's have speculated sometime around ... read more

Wow so somehow i've neglected to write for almost a month. So where to begin? Actually not very much has happened. I've fallen into the routine of class home Food sleep so between that there's been basketball and Chinese classes and stuff and that's about it. So anyway, a few weeks ago, near the end of the week we were so gracefully informed that the next week (which was last week) we would only have class on Monday and Tuesday as the students will be having exams from Weds - Fri. So I was excited about that because that means we get to travel and go somewhere exciting. Well, to my dismay Mother Nature had different plans for me. As time for our travel time approach we began planning our trip. It was ... read more

Celebrate the summer, dive into the sea. Celebrate the feeling, you and me. Take me to the ocean, living it supreme. Take me to the hot summer dream! First let me get it out of the way and say that all the pictures that are posted in this update are from the last posting I made. That is, these pictures are from National Holiday and not from this week. Ok now that that songs out of the way. Last weekend we decided to go check out the University. Actually....first we went to find out where it was. We were told it was by Number 1 Middle School. But we didn't know where Number 1 Middle School was. All we had was the directions of seriously "It's over there." Oh cool thanks. So we took off walking ... read more
