After 4 weeks of chinese culture the regulations of goverment forced me to leave the country, more or less. Heading off to Hongkong, seeing the western culture after weeks of the Asian one i made it back to Mainland. Because of tighten time schedule iwas forced to cut a lot of my ideas. Trying to obtain everything for Tibet is not a funny and relaxed part of this travel and having the doubts and fears of loosing more and more time i decided to rush my trip through china a bit. Nevertheless, this country is worth a travel, not only a visit. ... read more

So once again my Littlest Hobo moment has come and it's time to move on. Exams and marking finished last week so even though my contract is up at the end of July, I'm free to go. I have a Visa until mid-August so I'm planning a couple of months traveling around China. Then it's back to UK for a PGCE. Changsha So, Changsha eh? For those of you planning a visit, here are some Pro's and Con's Pro's - Known as the party capital of China, the street I live on has about 30 or 40 bars. Two new bar-littered streets have popped up since I've been here. They don't exactly offer a lot of diversity, but they're there. - Street food. You're peckish at 5am in the morning? No problem. Watch out for your ... read more

Foreign Teacher expo ning Yian. This was a foreign teacher appreciation day for the teachers in our area Yongzhou City. We went to an area called Ning Yian. We were able to see a temple to a sun dynasty emperor, a mountian with etchings from li bai and a giant cave where we watched and did a performance. Everyone was told about the expo the day before or the night before, drove the next morning wandered around Ning Yian in a motorcade because each teacher or set of teachers had their own car and then did a performance with no prior warning. Eh that is the way that things are done here. Short for now we are on the road. ... read more

Life in Jianghua Winding down the semester in Jiang hua. A quick post of pictures. With the frog of the wall, the bearded acupuncturist friend we found. Some students and the life of the silk worm. Many students have families that raise silk worms for their silk and so many bring a few into class for pets. They eat mulberry leaves spin a cocoon of silk and hatch out to be moths. Then they lay eggs hatch and start over. A pretty fun project but it leaves the one mulberry tree on campus a little worn when all those babies hatch hungry. ... read more

After a 3-1/2 hour bus ride that turned into a 4-1/2 hour ride we arrived in Louyang about 45 minutes late. The road was really rough, too rough to read, the driver went really super slow, stopping for the men to take pit stops behind bushes on occassion. We finally arrived in Louyang but Ryan Townsend, who was to meet us, was nowhere near. Mike and I went out to the street and looked around but no Ryan. I didn't have his number so I tried Feng who didn't answer, then Jiang-Jiang and ZhaoWong who didn't answer either. My battery was dying fast and we were going nowhere fast. I finally called Nate who said he would call Ryan and send me the phone number. Soon after a woman came by and asked if we needed ... read more

We made plans with the other foreign teachers in Jianghua, Sam and Anna, to go see the Qing Yan cave. The Qing Yan cave is quite a large cave that winds through to the other side then back on a lower level with a boat ride from a lower level under. We brought along two girls from my Senior 1 level class, Becky and Lyda, and two students from Steve's Senior 2 classes, Berry and Michael, as our guides for the day. Our journey began early in the morning because the students had classes Sunday afternoon. We were on the bus to Qing Yan by 7:45. We all squeezed tightly into the back of the bus (made for a much smaller stature than us Westerners) and groggily-chit chatted during the hour long bus ride down the ... read more

It began with a bit of a hiccup. National or rumored international Mayday was the previous weekend. However, Senior 3 would need the entire school for exams the following weekend, so rather than giving the first and second year student's two 3 day weekends in a row they delayed the holiday to this weekend. Throw out the plans of students seeing their families when they were let out of the factory hundreds of miles away, teachers who had rented cars and made reservations with friends in other provinces, national edict and rumored international sanction. After a week of hearing plans dashed, ours were delayed with little interruption. Students from the town of Jianghua itself wanted to give us the tour de culture past and present. As the students usually get up at 6am they decided to ... read more
