Yangshuo - 18.11.05 After 3 days and 2 nights of almost non-stop travel it was great to finally arrive in Yangshuo. We've been here a couple of days and have had a quick wander around the town and gone biking into the countryside. We have also changed hotels due to a duff tip from some other travellers - they raved about the Yangshuo Mountain Retreat so we thought we'd give it a try but it was way overpriced and the food was dreadful. Grr. We've only got another day here before we set off for our next destination - about which I am very very excited! Below are a couple of pictures of Yangshuo and the surrounding scenery. Lots of love xxx ... read more

Since we return from Zhongxan (our Oct 24), we were preparing for our "big trip". On Oct 28, we joined a tour from Hong Kong and visited Guilin, Yangsho, Siu Hing. The tour took us to all kinds of shopping but very few sights. However, the 4 day tour was still enjoyable. At the end of the tour, we did not return to Hong Kong. We asked the tour bus driver to drop us off at Sanshui, Guangdong, China. Sanshui is now part of Foshan, just west of Guangzhou. Phyllis' father grew up in Sanshui, but has not returned since he left for Hong Kong in his teens. Phyllis wants to find some roots and through her cousin, found a way to contact the folks in Sanshui. We have published two albums, one of Phyllis' relatives, ... read more

Yangshuo is the unofficial convergence site of backpacker China. There's this pedestrian-only street, Xi Jie ("West Street") that is 3 blocks long, full of cafes, bars, clubs and trinket stalls to cater strictly to ole Whitey. You'll hear James Blunt in the cafes and Maroon 5 in the bars, and have your pick of pancakes, hash browns, pizza and burgers to remind you of home. More likely than not, you will run into someone you may have met earlier in your travels here. Our first night out, we ran into a Finnish girl (whom we first met while in Mongolia over a month ago), who was now travelling with a UK friend who was accompanied by a Canadian girl who ran into 2 French girls that were now running with a San Francisco couple. No joke. ... read more

Pictures from around the Yangshuo area. Well it took all that time to get the pictures downloaded. Spending the week in Yanshuo and having a great time. It is quite the oasis with beautiful scenery (this was the scenery we expected along the Yangtse), great food, and a very nice place to stay with a balcony looking over the river. We will write more later.... read more

Lucky to get a ticket out of Shanghai to ... anywhere. Lucky to end up where I did. Guilin and Yangshao is the undisputed area of backpackers in China, a touch of S.E.A. Back again; banana pancakes, cheap knockoff Cd's, lame slogan t-shirts, movie bars and dazed out looks. I'll take it, I have a dazed out look too. This area is crying for you to get on a mountain bike (they actually rent good ones) and take off in any direction you please. River trails to follow, hikes to find, villages to visit, its all within a few hours ride, unless you're in horrible shape. In four days I must have put over 250 ks on the bike, good weather, no people just what I needed. Living in a place as beautiful has to rub ... read more

11/04/05 YangShaw is 3 hours away, so I decided to go there looking for good internet places to up load my diary. as a backpacker destination YangShaw should provided this service, and I did find one family guesthouse that provide free internet connection. I knew I will stay there. The Wong's family build this house and turn it into a guesthouse, and it mean family gusthouse to them! but for me... it is just a guesthouse that run by a family, they give you a room and that all! it wasn't my expectation, I was hoping for a living room we all can sit together and talk, a kitchen or small canteen. but doesn't matter, I got what I want here, download some software for my pocket pc, upload my diary and done! and the room ... read more

I'm now in Yangshou, China - possibly one of the most beautiful places we've been to on the entire trip. It's quite rural, and the main attraction is the limestone karsts - huge rock formations rising up as far as the eye can see. We've spent almost a week here, cycling around the countryside, climbing one of the peaks, taking a river-boat ride, and a trip to see cormorant fishing - very cruel! I've also had a dress and top custom-made for $5 and $3 respectively! Tonight we are taking an overnight bus to Hong Kong. I wonder how it will compare to the train - hopefully people won’t spit on the floor there too! Apart from a few disgusting habits, the Chinese people, contrary to what a lot of travellers say, are in fact very ... read more
