Paul - So here we are in rainy Yangshuo. Very rainy in fact. Not that we can really complain, it's still about 25 degrees and the scenery is wonderful! When I say wonderful, what I mean is breath taking. In fact let me just take a picture from our internet cafe window to show you all... it's the picture entitled "wish you were here?" I'm not entirely rubbing your noses in it, it's just very nice. Notice I'm not using exclamation marks so much any more thanks to Andy Marr telling me off. Git. So you probably want to know what we did today. Well got up at the unsociable hour of half 10 (unsociable as we were in that hazy time of just too late for breakfast, just too early for lunch DAMN!) and wandered ... read more

Laura - Got up and checked out of our hostel. Then waited for the rain to die down before legging it to the bus station to catch a bus to Yangshuo. Bus journey was the usual scary affair but this bus had seatbelts!! hurrah! First impressions of Yangshuo are very good, despite the rain. There are even more random peaks surrounding Yangshuo than there were in Guilin and because of the rain there were swirls of mist surrounding them, which looked really cool. Unfortunately the humidity and rain have brought out the mosquitoes and they are eating me alive!! Ouch. This is made even more annoying by the fact that Paul has only been bitten once! I keep telling him it's because the bugs have good taste. We've checked into a really cheap hostel and have ... read more

Ah, what a way to round off our trip to China! Yangshuo has to be my favourite town in China, small, fantastic scenery, loads of activities, plenty of good restaurants, and really geared towards backpackers. Xi Jie (West Street), is the main street with loads of shops, stalls, tourist agencies and restaurants. We stayed with a local family in the town, where we had 3 meals a day fed to us,with a selection of dishes at each sitting. We were spoiled rotten. One of the main things to do here is renting bicycles and heading off into the limestone hills on dodgy dirt tracks. So we duly headed off the first day along the Yulong river where we kept losing the (poorly signposted!) trail and ended up lost in paddy fields and up to our knees ... read more

ah Yangshuo is how the lonely planet china starts the description of Yangshou. If I YB ever do a doctorate thesis in social Studies I will do it on the evolution of towns around the world from total anonymity all the way to Bali/Cancun resort towns. On my scale, which is yet to be perfected (suggestions are welcomed), Yangshuo is rated "full backpacker" status. The town is probably just likely any 300k people town in China if it were not for 2 things: 1. the views - we will let the pictures explain 2. west street. this one street is full of guest-houses, restaurants of all kinds, bars noisy or quiet and ofcoruse travel agencies. The later offer anything a traveler needs: boat trips, bicycle trips, cave trips, hot-air balloon trips, rafting, kayaking. because of ... read more

Today I hired a local guide, a university student named Sally, to accompany me on a bike tour of the countryside around Yangshuo. We had a blast - even included a short bamboo rafting excursion - and I am running out of adjectives to describe this place. I have taken over 100 photos in 24 hours and do not think I have captured what is really here. I will add some photos and video clips as soon as I possibly can so you can see what I am ranting about. But even though it rained and was sooooo humid and hot, the day was absolutely perfect. Sally took me to a local family run um......restaurant. For local food. Now when you order a chicken dish here it is not quite the same as at home. After ... read more

O-my-gawd-o-my-gawd-o-my-gawd! How many times can you say that in a row? I said it for one and a half hours straight in the taxi from the Guilin airport to Yangshuo. Seems the white line in the middle of the road here is for straddling so that you can line your car up right. A two lane road accomodates up to 4 vehicles across, plus bikes, motorized rickshaws and various water buffalo. No one signals or checks rear view mirrors - but then the fine drapery in the windows of the vehicle would prevent seeing much anyway:). Horns are for honking the second you see something anywhere in front of you up the road -just so they know that you are coming and have the right of way. If I could have moved, I would have taken ... read more

Hello, and welcome from China, (Would have been more impressive if I could have said that in Chinese I know, but I can't so there)! Done a lot of travelling since my last entry and it's been a hard slog I can tell you. I'm lugging a lot of stuff, (damn the pursuasive techniques of those market sellers in Temple street), and the temperature here is around 27 degrees. We finally all came together completely as a group on Tuesday Morning. I still hold that we're a funny assortment of folk, some of whom I just can't suss, but it aint as bad as I first feared and I am developing my own little clique. We have a Journalist! She's Canadian... BUT SHES STILL A BLOODY JOURNALIST! (I'm meant to be on holiday away from such ... read more

Trains, Thai Chi & Chinese Officials So I've promised never to fill out Dom's custom's forms for him again. After kindly filling out both our forms on the ferry from Hong Kong to mainland China, upon disembarkment our tour group were kept waiting over 15 minutes - whilst Dom was interrogated in a small room by very serious and scary looking officials for an inconsistency in his name on the paper work. Oh dear!! In my defense however, I have to say that I have never been the best of spellers and when you have 4 names with confusing Italian spelling, I can't blame the Chinese officals for giving Mr Domenico Giuseppe John Salomoni a once-over... ;) Following a one night stop off at Guangzhou, we boarded what would be the first of 6 sleeper ... read more

We spent today just exploring Yangshuo town. We tried out another restaurant in town that served huge plates of American breakfast food. The food is always good but the "coffee" is instant. It's horrible. Choose tea or get the 20 yuan ($4) Blue Mountain brew. Just don't expect refills. I do love the free wifi Internet in every restaurant. It's very cool.
