Hey you amazing people! I hope you've had a good start of the new year :) I have! I worked my last day at EF this past Wednesday - with mixed feelings. Am still happy about my decision to move on to something more related to my career. On the other hand I've really enjoyed teaching as well as the atmosphere at work; my colleagues and students. Wednesday evening after my class, all my Small Star students (the really young ones) were invited to a goodbye party. I got drawings, cute gifts, flowers and lots of hugs and kisses! Was a really nice wrap up of my time at the school. I've been keeping up the internship on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with some breaks when Lina and Thomas and then Annika and Johan visited me. ... read more

... a very merry Christmas!!! Christmas eve is around the corner, which makes me think about family and friends even more than usual! I hope you're well!!! Wanna wish you a Great Christmas and A Happy New Year! Today, the day before Christmas eve, we've had a huge Christmas show with all kids from the 3 EF schools in Guangzhou. My 9-10 year olds sang Jingle Bells and We wish you a merry christmas. My little ones (3-5 year) were dressed up as angels and Santas singing and moving along with Oh christmas tree... Well, they were supposed to anyways, but so no one started singing, nor moving... So we did it acapella instead. A disaster really, but the kids were happy, so where the parents, and I guess you can't expect miracles with 60 "babys" ... read more

After clearing the passport control area between Hong Kong and the mainland (this is one very busy place) I made my way to find an ATM. None to be found. I ran into a friendly bus station attendant who spoke English, and he said that I needed to go to the Bank of China building. Hard be believe, but there was not a single ATM to be had right across from the Hong Kong border crossing. China and I were off to a bad start. Once I reached the building, having passed many offers for a 'massage', I found the bank. I lined up for the ATM, and noticed that lots of people where printing statements from it. When I got upto it, there was not place for the money to come out. Which would make ... read more

Hej alla underbara! Hope you’re well! Can’t believe December is already coming up… We're now practicing Christmas songs with the kids, for the coming Christmas performance :) And I’ve now been in Guangzhou for four and a half months (!!!) And still really like it! Some things are and will be changing though. Next week I’ll be moving into my new apartment, not far from where I live now. It’s on the 15th floor - overlooking a big road, neon signs and big buildings (iiihh… me like!). It’s smaller than my current place, but cheaper. It has no bathroom door, but a curtain instead - but when it comes to bathrooms you can't be too picky in China. ;) I also needed some additional furniture... and thanked God for IKEA. So, my plan to get Chinese ... read more

Staying on another Island, this time in land (it is surrounded by a river). We got here on Tuesday to find lovely warm weather so i am liking the south! We had read about a nearby market that has all sorts of livestock for sale, including cats. We found what we thought was the market but it was mainly dried food, a few shops on the backstreets had whole dead lambs hung up which was a bit morbid. We then headed to a park near our hostel which over looked the Pearl River. In the evening we ate in a fancy restaurant, we tried goose which was delicious and half a roast pig, but that was extremely dissapointing. All fat, no meat and also came with complimentary eye ball, teeth and trotters (with are very crispy!). ... read more

Never sure what to expect here in china. But I have come to understand when I see a stage....I know things are going to be big, very big. Whether its the opening ceremonies of my school's Sport's Day or the mini-american idol outside of the local Rainbow grocery store...it's always loud, full of decoration, costumes, and if at night, lights. Friday's Travel and Tourism Opening Ceremonies in Guangzhou did not disappoint. It was music was louder, the fireworks were grander, the costumes were more elaborate, the speeches were longer, and the line-up was more impressive. I still don't really understand the purpose of a Travel and Tourism Festival, but I did completely understand a day off of school, a free bus ride to Guangzhou, a free dinner, and paid admission to the opening ceremonies. It could ... read more

Yes I made it to China, to the city of Guangzhou, or Canton as it has been know in the west for some time. It is quite interesting that this city has three million inhabitants, Greater Guangzhou has six million inhabitants, and still so few people have heard about it back home. Anyway, I immensely enjoy Guangzhou!! OK, like my guidebook says very accurately, the city is not exactly pretty, but it's a real Chinese city! Those who know me may know how much I hate overexploited tourist places packed with souvenir shops selling junk, I just can't stand it! And here there are hardly no tourists, hardly any westerners at all actually, which means no souvenir shops and no people begging for money or trying to fool you. People just get on with their lives ... read more

Hey there! How are things? Here in Guangzhou the 100th Canton fair has just passed and the invasion of foreigners is over - thank god! The Canton fair has since it started 50 years ago grown into a huge convention/fair with a seemingly unlimited number of buyers and sellers, from China and abroad. Twice a year - spring and fall - Guangzhou literally booms. Prices in restaurants and hotels increase and many Guangzhou citizens manage to make their living due to this event. I visited the fair one day; to see Alice. Considering how inefficient China usually is, I was positively surprised how easy it was to enter. Of course, I needed to bring my passport and a picture of myself - to get a perforated entry card (plastic cards are used everywhere, for everything). Alice ... read more

Hongkong - Shenzhen - Ghuangzhou Dieses Wochenende begann schon sehr früh. Das ließ uns erahnen, was uns... read more
