Xiamen Travel Blogs

Background: For centuries China stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the arts and sciences, but in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the country was beset by civil unrest, major famines, military defeats, and foreign occupation. After World War II, the Communists under MAO Zedong established an autocratic socialist system that, while ensuring China's sovereignty, imposed strict controls over everyday life and cost the lives of tens of millions of people. After 1978, his successor DENG Xiaoping and other leaders focused on market-oriented economic development and by 2000 output had quadrupled. For much of the population, living standards have improved dramatically and the room for personal choice has expanded, yet political controls remain tight.

Craziness at Christmas Asia » China » Fujian » Xiamen
Hi all, Just to let you all know that a had a great, if unusual, Christmas. Thanks to everyone who sent cards etc (special thanks to Gertie for the home-made Xmas Pud). I would've updated sooner but the earthquake on Boxing Day put a spanner in the works. As I guess most of you know there was a fairly large earthquake off the coast of Taiwan about 8pm local time. I was at a restaurant with friends at the time and it took us a while to realise why the table was shaking! We only felt fairly mild aftershocks (nothing fell [View Full Entry]

Christmas in China Asia » China » Fujian » Xiamen
Time has certainly flown by. It's hard to believe that Christmas will be here in a matter of days. Unlike my Chinese colleagues I've got a few days holiday for Christmas and the current plan is to spend it with some of the other ex-pats here in Xiamen. I realised the other day that it'll be my first Christmas away from my friends and family and while (as I'm sure many of you know) I'm not a big fan of Christmas I will be thinking of you all over the holiday season. I don't have many weeks of teaching left before [View Full Entry]

The family is now travelling in xiamen in search of our roots..where our parents came from. I am travelling with my nephew, niece and sisters. Xiamen was the first place i visited way back in 2003 and it's the first place i'm visiting with my family again..to bring them to see Gulang Yu, Wuyi Mountain and of course, taste the delicious seafood - the flower crabs, the prawns, the tea...etc etc.. enjoy the pix!! Out and about in Xiamen Asia » China » Fujian » Xiamen
And so we reach December. Time really is flying by, it's hard to believe I've already been in China for almost four months. As I said in my last update I had a week off a while back because of the students' mid-term exams. Hannah, one of the other ELAs from Hangzhou, came down to stay with Alison (another of the ELAs) in Xiamen for a few days so I used it as an excuse to get out and do some of the touristy stuff in Xiamen itself. We went to Gulang Yu, a small ex-colonial island which is only a [View Full Entry]

Chung San Road, very clean, lots to eat and shop.
On Nov 28, 2006, we left Yong Ding and took the bus to Xiamen. The bus trip took 4 hours, and a lot of Chinese smoked on the bus. Note: Some Chinese long distances buses do not allow smoking, especially the ones departing/arriving to Shenzhen. After we arrived in Xiamen, we were dropped off at the ChungPak bus station, which is quite a way away from the tourist area. We approached a travel agent to see if we can arrange a guesthouse. They will only referred us to a guesthouse if we joined their tour, which we declined. Another tout [View Full Entry]

Xiamen & Gulangyu Island  Asia » China » Fujian » Xiamen
It was a really sunny day in Xiamen when we arrived on Saturday, we decided to get the ferry over to Gulangyu Island as we had the address of a hostel we thought we could stay in. We got what we thought was the passenger ferry across & I had checked with the lady in the ticket office that it went to Gulangyu & pointed to my map, she said it went to the location I was pointing to, (I should know by now not to trust what people say). The boat arrived at Gulangyu but on the wrong side of [View Full Entry]

An Island at last.. Asia » China » Fujian » Xiamen » Gulangyu
Arrived in Gulang Island on Saturday around 5pm but the ferry had taken us to the opposite side of the Island than we had expected and needed to be. Unfortunately there are no roads here just paths so no cars just the odd golf buggy, which made travelling to the other side of the Island interesting, luckily for us the island is only about 7km squared. We finally made it to the other ferry port but by then it had gone dark and although we found the road the hostel was on we could not find the hostel (China has no [View Full Entry]

Culture Shock, Us? Never!!!! Asia » China » Fujian » Xiamen
Well we have arrived! Spent the last few days in Bangkok, did the sights in a day - well-ish anyway - we went to the temple of the reclining buddha and went to go into the Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha - however, they wanted to charge us an extortionate entrance fee that would have fed us for 3 days, so we skipped that one! We are indeed a tight fisted pair! Spent the remaining two days shopping and swanning around! Oh it's back to the hard life! Then caught the flight of flights to Xiamen in [View Full Entry]

Centenary celebrations etc Asia » China » Fujian » Xiamen
First off I'd like to apologise for not updating sooner. I realise that it's been a while since I last posted. I've been kept fairly busy with my daily routine and haven't really been doing anything exciting with my time. A few weeks ago my school celebrated it's 100th anniversary. It's the oldest school in the region and there were a number of events to celebrate. So I dragged myself out of bed early on Saturday (28th Oct) morning and went to watch the main celebrations. The day started with an hour and a half of speeches and at this point [View Full Entry]

After a very comfortable flight we arrived safely in Xiamen and grabbed a bus to the harbour. The hostel we booked was actually located on Gulangyu Island, so we had to take a 5 minute ferry accross to it. The island is less than 2km squared with a population of about 20,000 so it wasn't too difficult to find the hostel. The island is very scenic, all the buildings including our hostel are old colonial buildings, many of which are state protected. Our first evening there we spent wandering through the small streets and lanes of the island. A very relaxing [View Full Entry]
