Background: For centuries China stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the arts and sciences, but in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the country was beset by civil unrest, major famines, military defeats, and foreign occupation. After World War II, the Communists under MAO Zedong established an autocratic socialist system that, while ensuring China's sovereignty, imposed strict controls over everyday life and cost the lives of tens of millions of people. After 1978, his successor DENG Xiaoping and other leaders focused on market-oriented economic development and by 2000 output had quadrupled. For much of the population, living standards have improved dramatically and the room for personal choice has expanded, yet political controls remain tight.

This place is seriously nice; one of our favourites yet in China, its an old European concession and has charming architecture and for once the guide books are right it describing every alley way as filled with character. We had a really nice couple of days zenning our way around and trying out local foods including the roast duck which was delicious [View Full Entry]

Gulang Yu - 12th Jan 2006 So we have fiiiiiinally left Hong Kong and as a complete change of scene we decided our first stop would be the tiny island of Gulang Yu, just off the south east coast. We caught a ferry from the town of Xiamen (a nice place where you can get some tasty snacks!) and after about 10 minutes we found ourselves on a rather charming and very very quiet island. The lack of noise is due to the ban of all vehicles; apart from some golf buggies which are used to get from one end of [View Full Entry]

Nov. 24 - 27: Xiamen, China Upon arrival in China, we were very impressed. Everything was super efficient, even more so than Singapore. We were in and out of customs in under a minute and our baggage was sitting waiting for us as soon as we got there. Xiamen is a very clean, modern city and not how I had pictured China to be at all. Xmas commercialism was booming ( I didn't even think that would exist in communist China), nowhere was crowded, there are beautiful parks and gardens everyone, a lovely island across the port where old colonies [View Full Entry]

We finally made it to a beach-- on the SE coast of China, in Xiamen. Lazing out on the sand, sipping cocktails, taking a dip to get the old heart going again (or to take a thinly-veiled piss break). That's what we pictured before we got here. But the first sight we arrived to on the beach were 3 guys in Dockers and dress shoes posing for pictures on the shore. There's no laying around or building sandcastles here. Beachfront is valued only as a photo backdrop. So it was a bit of a letdown as far as beach activity goes. [View Full Entry]

Forget about Hong Kong, this is much better! We arrived to Xiamen early yesterday morning. Right away we left the main island with a boat to a smaller sandy och rocky little island called Gulang Yu. With the pages ripped out from one of the guide books at the shabby hostel i Hong Kong we soon found a little hotel, somewhat rundown, but cheap and spacious. Here we were once again recogniced, looked and starred at as we must have been one of the few if not the only white people on the whole island... Even if that sometimes might get [View Full Entry]

Today I left for the airport with my parents to fly to Beijing. We had a lot of trouble with checking our luggage. They said that our bags were too heavy, but they didn't realized that I came from the US and trying to get to Beijing. They gave us a lot hassle. They made me open one of my bags. So I opened my bag and they pulled out the Avon Insect Repellent that VERONICA gave me. They questioned me about the insect repellent asking me what it is andhow do you you use it. I told them it was [View Full Entry]

The PEACE SIGN
I'm suppose to look more AMERICAN doing this he says!!!!
Torturous day! Mom and Dad me mad very upset today. We went to Mom’s favorite tailor, Mei, in China. We had a tea time with Mei and her husband. The husband, An, was this arrogant, longwinded, boring guy. During tea time, the husband offered to be my tour guide. He wanted to give me a tour of Gulangru Island, an island off of Xiamen. I wanted to tour this island with mom and dad. Instead, mom and dad insisted that I go with An. This is how the conversation went: An: I can take your son to Gulangru and show him [View Full Entry]

Today, I visited mom’s ancestral house. The place was amazing and very historic looking. Everything you touch in that place is more than 150 years old. Right now, I have an aunt that lives there. She is what we call the guardian of the ancestral house. She said a lot of Japanese tourist come to house and take pictures. Filmmakers also like to take screen shots of the place. So the place is kind of like a museum. I intrigued with lots of the artworks and antiques. You could tell mom’s side of the family were of the higher class in [View Full Entry]

Getting on the train from Shanghai to Xiamen was fast...too fast. I underestimated the traffic congestion in Shanghai of course, and when the taxi driver heard when my train was leaving (8:40am), he suggested I take a motorcycle taxi instead. I insisted he just try getting there fast, and he did (honking the whole way of course). With 3 minutes to departure time, I ran from the taxi through the security (luckily the usual long lines had not formed at this early hour, although I did push my way through the line like the best of them locals) and ran through [View Full Entry]
