Xiamen Travel Blogs

Background: For centuries China stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the arts and sciences, but in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the country was beset by civil unrest, major famines, military defeats, and foreign occupation. After World War II, the Communists under MAO Zedong established an autocratic socialist system that, while ensuring China's sovereignty, imposed strict controls over everyday life and cost the lives of tens of millions of people. After 1978, his successor DENG Xiaoping and other leaders focused on market-oriented economic development and by 2000 output had quadrupled. For much of the population, living standards have improved dramatically and the room for personal choice has expanded, yet political controls remain tight.

Rafting in Xiamen Asia » China » Fujian » Xiamen
Today was another early start as I was due to go rafting just outside Xiamen, again with some of the other ex-pat teachers. There was quite a large group of us in the end, about twelve or so. We were about halfway there when the car in front of us stopped to do a u-turn in the middle of the road. We tried to overtake it by crossing over on to the other side of the road only to meet a truck coming the other way. Our driver tried to weave the minibus through the gap but ended up hitting the [View Full Entry]

Hiking in Xiamen Asia » China » Fujian » Xiamen
Taiwanese Folk Village

Look closely and you can just make out the (fake) dinosaur skeleton imbedded in the rock face
Today I went for a hike in the mountains with a few of the other ex-pat English (and German) teachers. The mountains are located just behind my school although the route we took was on the other side, closer to the exhibition centre. There were quite a lot of people on the mountain as it’s a national holiday; apparently it’s usually pretty deserted. The scenery was lush and green but unfortunately the reservoir had been partially drained for some construction work, which spoilt the view a little. When we reached our highest point we were rewarded with some quite impressive views [View Full Entry]

Holidays! Asia » China » Fujian » Xiamen
As of tomorrow I'm officially on holiday for National Day and don't have to go back to work till the 9th of October. The current plan is to do the touristy stuff here in Xiamen and other stuff in Fujian province like visiting Quanzhou further up the coast and the minority villages in the south-west. I'm also planning to do a bit of white-water rafting. Should all be good fun. Since I'll be quite busy (and not at work) I might not update till I get back on the 9th but by then I should have some cool photos and stories [View Full Entry]

One month in Asia » China » Fujian » Xiamen
Ok so I realise I haven't really updated much about Xiamen itself so I thought I'd tell you something about the city and my school. Xiamen's a fairly small city by Chinese standards with only about 1.5 million people. The city itself is on the island of the same name just off the Chinese mainland opposite Taiwan. Because it's quite a small city it has a very relaxed feel, a fact that is helped by the weather. It was really hot and humid when I first got here but now (bar the occasional short-lived thunderstorm) it's far more comfortable, temperatures [View Full Entry]

Xiamen Night Lights
Xiamen Night Lights
The Xiamen city-scape is a neon spectacle.
Luckily, JB has had the time to familiarize himself with many of the best sights to visit in Xiamen - and there are many! A quick overview is as follows; 1 Gulangyu Island..... We twice took the ferry to this popular place. It attracts residents and tourists (not many Westerners were noticed). There are no motorized vehcles allowed on this historical island where the Victorian buildings of the early European consulates are now preserved.....pearl shops, bird aviary, musums and gardens delight. A night view from Gulangyu shows Xiamen in all its LED lit glory. 2 University of Xiamen..... Ta [View Full Entry]

In Gulang yu Asia » China » Fujian » Xiamen » Gulangyu
Well here we are in China on Gulang Yu Island and its been raining since we got here! How did we get here?? Well we got the flight that left late and instead of arriving at 8.30p.m we got in after 9.30 and then could only change US$50 at the airport and it was Saturday night so we knew the banks would be closed on Sunday. We could not phone the guest house as we did not have the number -what i thought was the number was the area postal code. Well the taxi took us to town no sweat till [View Full Entry]

Chinese Leg room
Chinese Leg room
You must be joking!
Getting off the plane from Shanghai to Xiamen we were fully clad in our winter attire only to be whacked by a torrent of warm air when exiting the airport. OH OH the sun. So nice. It is amazing how one takes sunlight for granted. Having bounced from hemisphere to hemisphere for the last 8 months I have only had summer. So China came as quite a shock to me as well as Ryan. But darling Xiamen was a temperate 23 with blue blue sky. Caught the hour long bus for 1 RMB to Gulang Yu island. Caught the free ferry [View Full Entry]

Gulang Yu Asia » China » Fujian » Xiamen » Gulangyu
This place is seriously nice; one of our favourites yet in China, its an old European concession and has charming architecture and for once the guide books are right it describing every alley way as filled with character. We had a really nice couple of days zenning our way around and trying out local foods including the roast duck which was delicious [View Full Entry]
