20th August Today we were back at the rowing venue to watch flatwater canoeing and kayaking. It's not as interesting as rowing (maninly because there were'nt any brits competing). Spent the evening at a Beijing crispy duck restaurant that was recommended by our hostel. Incredibly unhealthy, but very tasty! 21st August Taekwondo in the afternoon today. It's a really strange sport where both fighters jump on the spot for about 30 seconds and then they try to kick each other. It's another one of these subjective sports where the final result seems to come down to the judges' abilty to judge rather than the athletes' ability to fight. An American woman sitting near us in the crowd kept shouting "kick 'im in the head" every minute or so - sound advice as that's the aim of ... read more

Day 27 Two nights, twice in the Birdsnest and what an amazing place that is flags flying crowds cheering we got to watch some phenomonal performances, Danvers and Ohuragu both qualifying for finals, mens 10,000 Metres British High jumpers all through and our very last experience of compettition way isambyeva breaking the womens pole vault record!! The stadium is even more amazing than you would imagine and the cube is about the coolest thing I've ever seen its just amazing. As the photo's show we went all out to support team GB flags and facepaint cheering and hollering, (plus we're show offs and we wanted to be noticed!) However be careful what you wish for...it may come true!! It took us an hour to walk 500m from the birds nest to the subway station as a ... read more

We got thru opening ceremonies and we decided it was time to go out and eat something other than the food in the compound, many people said to go out for a Peking Duck Dinner so we decided to give it a go. I did a little research and found out there was what we consider in the states a chain restaurant called "Da Dong" which specializes in Peking Duck Meals. It was suggested to go there because it follows the western tradition of cleanliness. Before we left I asked the attendants at the desk where the nearest one was, they wrote down the name and address on a special card that has English and a Chinese translation on it. The idea of the cards was anyone would be able to get directions from a local ... read more

The Brits are in Beijing!!!! Finally after weeks of travelling we have made it to Beijing and it has not disappointed. We climbed the five peaks in Huashan the chinese had been kind enough to cut stone steps into the mountains which you would think would make it easier but try climbing a staircase for three an a half hours and you will find it does not. It hurts and competetive couple insisted on doing all five peaks in the morning when most people do two or three in a day! Sweaty Pasty silent brits storming up a hill without the merest hint of pleasure on their faces is another sight the Chinese can tick off. Amaxing views at the peaks though. Shanghai kind of came and went, nice dinner with Julie P but wasn't Beijing ... read more

I am working at The National Stadium in the Olympic Park. The events being held here are the Opening Ceremonies, Track and Field, Mens & Womens Marathons, Soccer Finals and the Closing Ceremonies. It is a pretty interesting facility as far as large stadiums go. There is not a truck bay as we are used to, this is the area where we park the TV mobile units and have access to the internal wiring of the stadium. As far as I can see there is no pre-installed wires, which to me is kind of weird since that means any TV shows will have to run cables to each position. That is a big job at a stadium as large as this one. The stadium is very attractive, at night the lighting makes it glow red and ... read more

17th August Early start this morning to get to the hockey. Watched GB in a disappointing 1-1 draw to Canada. This effectively ended their realistic chance of a medal. Next we were off to the Rowing. GB were represented in 5 of the 8 events. The atmosphere here was brilliant. It seemed like the GB supporters here are the same people you would see on Henman Hill at Wimbledon - loads of Union Jack flags, stupid hats and face paints. It seems, though, that the smaller the country, the more crazy their fans were. The Danes were all singing together and at one point a man from Finland was teaching everyone in the crowd how to cheer on the Finnish team in Finnish! Only GB rowing fans would come away from an event feeling slightly disappointed ... read more

Left home on July 29th and got to Beijing 15 hours ahead of time on July 30th. That was weird. went thru all the necessary checks, got my luggage, went to my Media Village and settled in for the long haul. I found out quickly most people are very friendly and inquisitive. They want to talk about where we are from and how do we like china. The overall security situation is great. They are taking very good care of us. See the pictures of our building and my room. More to come ...... read more

14th August Spent the morning at Behai Park which is next to the forbidden city in Beijiing. I think this is probably the nicest spot in Beijing. The park is basically a lake with an island in the middle which has a big hill and a pagoda on top. The view from the top looking over the forbidden city are very impressive. In the afternoon we watched some basketball. We were fortunate to see China play - with our tickets we're never sure who we're going to see. China's star player - and probably the most famous athelete in China - is a vertigo-inducing 7ft 6in tall. China palyed Angola who unfortunately didn't have their own giant player and so lost convincingly. Also saw Rissia play Belarus with Belarus taking the win in the last few ... read more

12th August Went to Beijing zoo this morning specifically to see the pandas. They are smaller than I expected. The pandas live the life of luxury which is probably to the detriment of the other animals in the zoo. They are entertaining animals to watch and certainly have a lot of character. In the afternoon we went to watch Greco-Roman Wrestling (I'll try anything once!). It's a very bizairre sport and even after watching it for 3 hours I couldn't tell who was winning or even whether the match had finished. Probably the most entertaining thing about this sport is the crowd - it looked like a scene out of the Borat movie. It appears that to qualify for Greco-Roman wrestling you have to come from a country that was previously part of the USSR. ... read more

We've now spent nearly two weeks in Beijing. Probably easiest to go through day by day (if I can remember!). 8th August Watched the opening ceremony this evening on a TV in our hostel. We had tried to go to one of the big screen that had been advertised as showing the ceremony, but when we got there it was switched off. There were a lot of very upset Chinese people there who had travelled a long way to get there and now wouldn't have time to get back to watch it on TV. Fortunately it was only half an our back to our hostel so we didn't miss too much. The ceremony itself was amazing, but I've read theough the BBC website that some of the fireworks were not live and the little singing girl ... read more
