Hello everybody. Something pretty cool happened today - one of those moments when all the shame and embarrassment of hanging around Lloyd pays off. We got free tickets to the China Open. And not just cheap tickets - centre court tickets from 11:00 to 7:00PM - we got to see Djokovic, Venus Williams, Davina Safina, and we saw Roddick on one of the other courts - it was awesome. And even better - cans of Heineken were only RMB10/can, so life was good. I can't think of much to write though unfortunately - it's basically all we did all day - no exciting stories about getting there except that it took an awfully long time to get there because it's a lot further away than we expected, but even that only made us half an hour ... read more

Ni Hao from super hot Beijing! The temperatures rose to 37C today and all the students had their hats, sunscreen and umbrellas up while also drinking lots of water to beat the heat! We hope that in sending you this blog you might feel some of the “heat”/excitement of the students and the team here knowing that you aren’t having temperatures as high back home! From the supervisors, we are so happy with the amazing students who are on this trip. Everyone is very courteous, polite, and friendly to each other and it is so nice getting to know all of them and share this exciting adventure with them. It is so good to see them making new friends and really showing interest in the culture and history of China. The students ask lots of great ... read more

After the meal at One Thousand and One Nights, Ryan easily convinced me that I needed to visit Olympic Park at night for the cool light displays on the structures. It took about 30-40 minutes to reach it by subway, but the Park was still open, though none of the stadiums were. I'd have to come back later to see them during the day. It had just finished raining and the wet ground created beautiful reflections of the lit structures, especially the Water Cube. A few minutes after we passed the Olympic Tower, it started raining...and then pouring. Neither of us had an umbrella, though I at least had a bag to put my camera in if needed to protect it. It was cold, but I enjoyed listening to the sounds of the showers and seeing ... read more

Morning we departed for a trip to Bejing Normal University, also called BNU. We learned that "normal" means teacher preparation college. We heard from several guest speakers including a professor from the Education Faculty and her graduate students. It was most impressive to hear their presentations, in English, with power point and an amazing control of the language. It was 98 today and their version of AC is like non-existent. We were dripping by the end, but it didn't matter..they were such gracious hosts. They were so appreciative of the gifts we brough you would be amazed how thankful they were. Attached are photos of Matthew and I when we took pictures with the guests. After lunch, another typical Chinese meal(see photo) we went to the Olympic Village. We were able to tour the Olympic Stadium, ... read more

Day 2- Beijing. First, I must apologize for the lack of photos for the next few entries. We are having a hard time finding an internet cafe that will let us upload photos. Not to fear, though. We have taken over 400 pictures in our week here so you'll have plenty to see once we get to a suitable place. On our second day in Beijing, after vowing to never eat American food again on our trip, we started our day with a visit to the Olympic Green. A bit of an oxymoron as there is nothing but concrete as far as the eye can see, but impressive none the less. Even the subway station near the Green is a tourist attraction! We walked around the Water Cube and the Bird's Nest. Of course, they were ... read more

Back in Beijing! It was a uneventful train ride, as I was asleep for most of it. Piece of advice: if you have to take a train for more than five hours get a bunk. It costs a bit more (170 kuai for a hard sleeper v. 98 kuai for a chair one way from Beijing to Hohhot) but your tailbone will thank you for it. I was on the bottom bunk, so no funny stories about climbing the 8" ladder, sorry. Maybe next time. I wanted to take a minute to rave about Chinese hospitality. So far, on my trip, the people that I have encountered have been friendly and warm. I have never felt out of place, and there is always someone who is willing to explain what is going on to me. I ... read more

Our final day in Beijing and Cass suggested we rent some bikes from the hostel to cover some ground and see as much of the city as we can. My first thoughts were of images of honking speed demons and the previous day’s traffic encounter on the way to the Great Wall. “No thanks, I rather enjoy being alive…” but the more I thought about it, it was a brilliant idea. The early morning sunshine cast long shadows on the locals navigating rusty, dirty bikes along the grey brick streets of the hutong. The ‘prrings’ of bike bells in the distance was too much, I could handle this scene. Cass was game right from the get go, after I came to terms with the realistic possibility of becoming a hood ornament, I was pretty psyched about ... read more

Started the day with lacing up my hightops, in an attempt to be properly respectful during the days adventures. You all know how cranky I get just wearing socks, so the idea of tromping around socked and shod for the day filled me with certain misgivings and I was hoping to make it through the day without snapping. I figured it was safer for me to explore alone today (wearing shoes and all) so I set off for Jingshan Park (which is located directly behind the Forbidden City) as I heard that if you climb to the top of the hill it affords an excellent view over the city. An interesting fact is that the hill was built out of the earth excavated from around the Forbidden City to built its moat. The day was lovely, ... read more

Dear all - For months I have been going on about my grand plans to travel overland from China to Europe. It's now April 2009, the time has finally come to tear myself away from Beijing and embark on my voyage home. Previously my trips between Europe and Beijing have involved a couple of hours waiting in an airport lounge, ten hours on a plane being fed and entertained, and a short car ride to my house. Swift, comfortable and generally not much to write home about. Time for a more interesting way to get home, I thought, as a final celebration of four years of living in China. The idea is to get home entirely overland: no planes allowed, only trains, busses, mini-cabs and perhaps a camel or two if I can manage to stay ... read more
