Today, I woke up at about 6:30 to get ready to go to gymnastics. My aunt is taking me to watch it at the National Indoor Stadium. I had toast as usual for breakfast. Last night, I charged up my camera battery to full. Bobo was still very fuzzy when he woke up. I was very excited. Today would be the first day I go see an Olympic event. We packed everything up. I brought my camera and my Olympic hat. My aunt and I walked to the subway station near us. It only takes about 5 minutes. We headed down to the subway area. We had to take about eleven stops until we transfer to line 10. It wasn’t very crowded so I sat on a seat. My aunt sat next to me. I ... read more

Yesterday night was the opening ceremony for the olympics. Me and two of my friends decided to give it our best shot to be part of the madness around the stadium during the ceremony. None of us had tickets so we thought it might get a little interesting to see what we would actually be able to do. Right before we left at 4:00 one of our friends told us that if you don't have a ticket then you can't get anywhere near the action...so, i grabbed the three boxing tickets i have for the 23rd and headed out to towards the stadium with my two friends John and Grace. the cab dropped us off pretty far from stadium but it was as close as we could get. When we tried to cross the overpass to ... read more

The Beijing Olympics games, finally, I was planed 7 years ago to be there for this event, there were so many friends wanted to be here in the China, but only 6 of them really came from Brazil, indeed I was in the opening ceremony only, because we planed to travel through China at Olympics games period. Anyway, the opening ceremony was simply fantastic and fabulous! I think no one can be better than China for long long time, China really wanted to show to the world what they are capable, and the China did. The opening ceremony started with 2008 soldiers beating the "fou", one kind of ancient Chinese drum, and then the fireworks from Tian An Men square by form of footprints, step by step "walking" to the stadium, the Bird's net, and the ... read more

Yesterday was as busy as today, and we collapsed when we returned to our hotel around 11pm. I will have pictures to attach for today and yesterday when I return home! The Olympic Venues - Ken, one of our fellow teachers, is here now too. He arrived here on the 2nd and will stay until the 10th. He met us for lunch and then we took the subway to the Olympic area. The new Beijing subway system is amazing, and they have done a great job merging it with the old. I feel like a pro using the subway! We took a special bus around the whole area - the stadium, the birdsnest, the Olympic Village and all! WOW!!!!! The bus ride was over a half an hour. It was a beautiful sunny day - and ... read more

Throughout history, there have been a multitude of catastrophies, in which animals have given us warnings of impending disasters. One recent tragedy, that stands out in my mind, is the "great tsunami" in Indonesia only a few years ago. Elephants in large numbers, to the surprise of the inhabitants, stampeded toward higher grounds as the monster sea-waves approached the shores. The people of the Indonesian Islands did not know what to make of the elephants' strange behavior, until it was too late. Let me tell you of another similar, but current occurrence. The event is documented in the first photo of this TravelBlog. I am not able to take credit for this picture, though it was taken in my city of Taizhou, Jiangsu : Only HOURS before the devastating earthquake hit the province of Sichuan in ... read more

Hi All, Greetings from Beijing! We visited the Great Wall of China today, but I'll save that for the next, and possibly last, blog. Apologies in advance for any spelling errors; the letters on this keyboard have nearly all rubbed off so I'm typing from memory and a bit of guess work! When I finished the last entry we had one more day left in Kyoto. We continued what we'd started on the first full day by visiting the main Buddhist temples in the city, each of which had its own special feature. The first temple had a special dry rock garden containing a number of stones which were strategically placed so that you could never see more than 14 of them. The meaning of this was unknown but you were supposed to look out over ... read more

Yesterday spent all day at the Summer Palace--sort of like Golden Gate Park with a bigger lake, if Golden Gate Park were privately owned as someone's summer home. It's many attractions include the Long Corridor, a wooden walkway with (we are told) over 14,000 paintings, and the longest continuously painted walkway in the world. It certainly is the longest continuously painted wooden walkway Lynn and I have ever walked down. Big lake, beautiful bridges and temples on the hillside. Again, pictures tell the story. Today we managed to get to the site of the Olympics and get as close as we were permitted to the two signature structures--the Birds Nest (National Stadium) and the Bubble Cube or Water Cube (Natatorium). Later, while searching for Peking Duck to eat, we ended up downtown in the Grand Hyatt, ... read more

For ages, the game of Baseball has brought Americans together through entertainment, joy, the spirit of competition, and the deification of the "Major Leaguers." In America, whether it's the Cubs, Yankees, Padres, or any other team, every one has "their" team. No matter what your reasoning is and whether or not you watch every single game, you are somehow tied to a Baseball club. For many Americans, we take pride in our teams' histories, records, stadiums, and players and baseball becomes a lifestyle rather than something to do when you are bored. In China, this is not exactly the case. In China, baseball is not exactly the glorified sport-of-choice. No one has a favorite baseball team or for that matter, a baseball team nearby. The Chinese prefer other options such as: Ping Pong, Tennis, and Badmitton. ... read more

Beijing, China had been trying to host the Olympic games for many years and when the IOC finally awarded them to the city, the entire country became intent to showcase the new China to the World. The same will and pride that inspired building the awesome Great Wall and the magnificent Forbidden City are now driving the construction of the most spectacular sports venues that the World has ever seen. And as it was the case before in Chinese history, the cost of building them now is not an issue! I have concentrated so much on visiting historical sites around Beijing that I had not paid too much attention to the sites that are becoming the modern “descendants” of the Great Wall and the Forbidden City. Perhaps the purpose of these new architectural wonders will be ... read more
