This was our first stop on the city tour today - and what a great start! These were both awesome structures to see. Gary, our Beijing guide, says these were just opened to the public last October; this was only his third time there, even though he is a local! We went through the water Cube first. It was designed to make you feel like you were under water. He has 17,000 seats, bigger than Sask Place, Auntie Dawn said. You could just imagine the excitement in the building during the Olympic races. The colors and feel were all beautiful. The National Stadium, or Bird’s Nest was next. The are about 500 meter apart, across Olympic Plaza, where the Ling Long Pagoda is also situated (where Ron MacLean hosted the CBC Olympic broadcasts). The Bird’s Nest ... read more

well I honestly forgot about a few of the other things that I did while I was in Beijing. This isnt a long entry just an addition to the last one. So one amazing day was spent in the new olympic area that was built for well....... the olympics . This was a spectacular sight. The whole area was brand new and as the olympics really only finished in july the stuff still had that brand new feel to it. There were all the buildings which had the indoor stuff like hockey and gymnastics , but the centre piece of the area was the Birdsnest. This is a building that looks like an actual bird's nest its a building that looks like its going to fall down at first but once you take in its beauty ... read more

07.11.08 Today we have some more good news. First thing in the morning we walked to the Vietnamese embassy. The whole area is populated by embassies, one after the other. At the office we talked to a nice lady that reassured us telling that the flood caused no problem in the centre of Hanoi but touched only the outskirts. Same for Ninh Binh. She said we're not going to have any problem. Nearby we stopped for breakfast at a French bakery and walked the five minutes to the silk street. We have to say, it's been a horrible experience. Five stories of everything that can be possibly faked on earth. I don't even want to comment about the morality of this empire of counterfeit, not to mention the slavery in which people producing these things are ... read more

Had a very quiet day, just ventured to the Olympic Park before heading to get the train to Xi'an in the evening. Ended up in a carriage with 3 chinese blokes who insisted on plying me with beer and peanuts (which I accepted) but the jellied fish and chicken feet I passed on........ read more

Good Morning Beijing! After flying on a plane thats "belly camera" was on during most of the flight-"Belly camera -What's a belly camera? " A Belly camera is a camera on the belly of the aircraft that films what's happening underneath the plane during the flight. This camera is on from before takeoff to after landing. That means that I was watching how the runway disappeared as we were taking off and how the new runway appeared a little too quickly as we were landing. I wanted to complain that this belly view of the world was not good for my nerves but instead I just flew with the blanket over my head. Jeff thought it was cool. I started my day staring at a rug in the elevator that said THURSDAY in English and Chinese. ... read more

Our first trip into the city of Beijing Ok...so we decided we needed to go buy cameras and do some sight seeing. We felt really adventurous so we decided to take the subway. The first line, line 10, was new, clean, and really modern. This took us down to the electronics mart. It was a pretty big store that housed too many vendors to count. And this was where the fun begins. We were told never pay full price so we were ready to barter. I felt that since almost everything is made in china we could get pretty good deals. But buyer beware you have to understand the conversion from dollars to RMB's or Yuan’s. This is further complicated by the fact that the bank gives 6.189 RMB's to a dollar and the vendors say ... read more
