My family has spent every Fourth of July since I was a young child on a lake somewhere in the Midwest United States. This year Darren, Ben and I tried a lake in Uganda. There weren’t the fireworks that typically accompany this holiday, there was certainly no Miller Lite, and the nearest bratwurst is probably half a hemisphere away in Germany, but the scenery made up for these shortcomings and Nile Beer with fried chicken provided an excellent substitute. Lake Bunyonyi is a beautiful lake with many inlets and coves and islands dotting the interior. The hills surrounding the lake are a brilliant lush green and criss-crossed with trails through innumerable farm terraces. Agriculture is an enormous part of the economy in that area, so there are plenty of locals in the hills keeping you company ... read more

Ja, de laatste weken van mijn stage wordt het echt nog even heel erg druk! Het is net zoals het op school altijd gaat...Op het begin van een semester is het altijd rustig, maar als het einde nadert stijgt de druk, soms tot ongekende hoogten. Nou wil ik niet zeggen dat de druk te hoog aan het worden is, dat zou wel heel ver gaan in Afrika...maar het is wel zo dat ik het in al die maanden nog niet zo druk heb gehad! Het concept van de "Climate Communities and Biodiversity Assessment" waar ik aan werk, was af en is nagekeken door de organisatie in Nederland. We had a reasonably easy border crossing into Uganda wish I could say the same for the 'roads'. We could easily have been driving through the middle of fields judging by the speed we could go and the pot holes (some the size of a large dog). The difference between Kenya and Uganda was immediately obvious and incredible. The houses were round thatched mud huts in the middle of banana plantations, people on the side of the road seemed more aloof with only a few waving at us as we went by. Our first stop was Kampala, the capital. Our first big town since Nairobi it was a change in culture. Most fascination was the huge storks all over the place like pigeons. Ik heb er nu net een week opzitten hier op het herbebossingsproject in Kibale nationaal park. Het werkkamp waar ik verblijf heet Mainaro, en is in het Kamwengye district. Mijn werk is eigenlijk gewoon kantoorwerk helaas...maargoed het is best leuk om te doen. Kort gezegd gaat het erom dat ik alle mogelijke informatie en documentatie van het project over sociale, ecologische en klimaat zaken samenvoeg tot een document. Dit document zal de basis zijn voor een certificaat wat te vergelijken is met het FSC voor hout, maar dit is dan voor klimaatbosprojecten. Want voor stichting Face gaat het daarom dat deze bossen koolstofdioxide opslaan die anders in de atmossfeer zou zitten en zou bijdragen aan het broeikaseffect. I hope you all are fine! I read that the weather in the Netherlands is very good last weeks. That's good to know, cause it means probably that you're somehow having a good time. At the moment I'm back in Kampala. But that is however only for one night. Tomorrow I'll meet the director of the FACE foundation in Kampala and we'll travel together to Kibale national park, about a day of traveling from Kampala if everything goes well. I am very exited about what awaits me there. At this moment the only thing I really know about it is that I will be there on saturday, sunday and monday, when the director will leave again. What will happen after is still a surprise. I will receive my instructions the coming weekend. Last 2 weeks however ... read more
