I leave Kampala in a torrential downpour on a bus that, despite having a supposedly fixed departure time, waits around until it is full. The first two hours have competing attractions. A well-dressed salesman somehow spends this entire period giving a pitch for various Chinese medicines. Unlike in the UK or US where he would be ignored - and quite possibly requested to shut up - by all passengers, here most are actually paying attention and he makes a few sales. The competition is the series of amusingly amateurish music videos playing on the bus's lone TV. The nadir is reached by Rude Boy Devoh, whose apparently serious rap entitled "Man-U" sees him name-checking various players who've represented Manchester United over the last 20 years. It's truly appalling. We lose the salesman at the half-way point ... read more

South of Fort Portal lies a region of crater lakes formed in the distant past. It's supposedly a pleasant area to hang out in hence - since I'm all about hanging out - it has some appeal. As I am breakfasting in Fort Portal I meet a pair of young Aussies who are doing a Cape Town to Cairo trip. They are heading to my own intended destination, Lake Nkuruba, so we agree to share transport there. Our accommodation choice is, of course, the sole offering from the WLP. I'd stumbled across some forum threads stating that a rival camp next door with a very similar name has been "stealing" customers by bribing the taxi drivers in Fort Portal to bring them to the wrong site. The owner of this rival camp claims that his profits ... read more

Just a short entry for once... Gina and I started our long day off flying early (well early for me with no job...), from Cape Town to Jo'burg, Jo'burg to Nairobi, and finally Nairobi to Entebbe in Uganda, arriving at our hotel at approx midnight. pick up the next day was at 9, for what would turn out to be a 10 hour drive to Bwindi Inpenetrable forest. Our guide is Xavier, (he turns out to be THE WORST guide ever, and the most dangerous driver). anyway, he takes us an hour or so up the road to the Equator. here we get a demo on how the water does infact rotate in diff directions when poured down a sink, and when on the equator itself, does not rotate at all! NICE! The scenery is nice ... read more

So those of you who know me better, you probably realised that my good intentions of regularly keeping this blog updated would never come to fruition. But I do have a valid excuse, I have been working my socks of juggling my two jobs (and everyone thought this was an extended holiday). From my first week I have been working from 8am to at the earliest 6.30 pm and sometimes much later, if I have to go to the tour camps to speak to visitors (awwww poor me). Sometimes the last thing you want to do is pick up the laptop again. My first week in Bwindi is a bit distant now. I remember I had lots to do, like organising the carpenter (david) to build me beds, trying to keep the mice out, repairing the ... read more

Ok, so I am sat under my Banda (thatched walless, decked, eating/relaxing outdoor room) eventually finding some spare time to start my blog from Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in South West Uganda (2km from the Congo!) The moon has just risen over the forest hills, the ladies next door in the maternity section are signing and the chimpanzees are calling in the forest (ok well that’s a lie, but they were this morning), Altogether pretty idyllic (did I mention that I woke up last night with a rat crawling across my face!) I wasn't going to start a blog as they are pretty self indulgent, eg my life is so great, what is yours like but I decided this would be a good way of staying in touch with family who aren't on face book so here ... read more

I am new to this blogging thing, but I thought I would write about my recent trip to Africa to track the mountain gorillas of Uganda and Rwanda. I usually travel on my own, arranging things as I go, but I was limited with the time I had available and also I have heard that you have to prebook your gorilla tracking permits way in advance, so I thought I would consult a Tour operator. I gave a couple of UK based tour operators a call and got some advice, but I could hear that none of them had actually been to either Uganda or Rwanda and so were giving me information that I could probably find on the internet. If I was going to do this once in a life time experience I had to ... read more

Ruboni Community Camp nestles in the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains in Western Uganda. The patio outside my banda gave beautiful views towards the mountain range. Ruboni is the starting point for trekking in the Rwenzoris - an activity I never had any intention of doing. All profits from the camp go to help support the community. It was, therefore, bad for the community, but good for me, that for the 3 nights I stayed there, I was the only guest. It was a peaceful haven, with stunning views, friendly staff, perhaps the best vegetarian food I have had in Uganda and a variety of guided walks. Whatever possessed me to do a walk labelled as a 'strenuous hill climb'? When I know that I do not enjoy hills! They didn't lie ... half way up ... read more

My first glimpse of mountain gorillas at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park made the high prices and the journey to get here so worthwhile. I’d left Masaka a week earlier by Post Bus, having failed (twice) to see Shoebills. The Post Buses literally carry post and passengers between post offices along a route. Unusually, or so I was told, the bus I was waiting for was over 2 hours late due to a breakdown. The time was filled by a Ugandan woman occasionally striking up conversation with me: it’s not the first time in my life that I have been asked, “Are you saved?” but I think it is the first time I’ve been asked, “To what tribe do you belong?” I had thought that I would stay for a couple of days in Kabale, but the ... read more

Calamity returns and busy preparing for next adventure to trek after the gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Rainforrest. This is by no means the only adventure to follow Antarctica, if I have time and access I may fill in, and have just sussed how to add entry easily! No mean feat! Managed to get the jungle boots. though not very fetching and poor choice of colours, should meld into the gothic look acquired to blend in with the impenetrable etc. No bright colours allowed and even my animal print wardrobe has to take a step back. I climbed North Berwick Law last week, approximately 600 feet, half an hours exercise, in an attempt to train! and see how fit/unfit I was. I now read that high fitness levels are required, gulp, for up to 4 hour trecks ... read more
