Background: Shortly after independence, Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged to form the nation of Tanzania in 1964. One-party rule came to an end in 1995 with the first democratic elections held in the country since the 1970s. Zanzibar's semi-autonomous status and popular opposition have led to two contentious elections since 1995, which the ruling party won despite international observers' claims of voting irregularities.

Getting High on Mt. Kilimanjaro Africa » Tanzania » North » Moshi
Talk about a walk in the clouds! Edgar and I arrived in Nairobi, Kenya on September 11 and took a shuttle to Moshi, Tanzania, a small town at the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The shuttle ride there was wild. It took 7+ hrs and had to be on some of the worst roads I have ever been on. At some points we were literally bouncing out of or seats. However, it was worth it as we saw the country side and the people who live there. A lot of Masai tribesmen and women who were herding there flock along the road, including [View Full Entry]

Slowing down, calming down and blowing bubbles..... After the totally hectic dash to get to the plane, fly through what remained of the night and get to Kenya, to hop on another plane quick smart to head to Dar (having completely forgotten there are direct flights to Zanzibar, which would have saved $150 or so in flights) then a taxi transfer to Terminal 1 for a ZanAir flight to Chake-Chake in Pemba, I had enough time to breathe, grab a delicious bowl of beans and rice at the little cafe down the road and find out that I had enough time [View Full Entry]

Hello there! I'm looking to relocate from Brussels to Dar es salaam in January 2010 - I'm looking to get a visa for a year, but am pretty open minded with no immediate mid to long-term plans, so coudl easily stay longer if I find myself loving it! I'd love to teach English in local schools and learn Swahili, alongside teaching drama/theatre in International schools (I assume that since I speak no Swahili as yet, this could only be done in International schools...?) However, I need advice! Where is good to live in Dar for a 23 yr old British/Finnish girl? [View Full Entry]

So I am sitting here in the Arusha internet cafe with ten minutes left on my account. I had a beautifully written entry all typed up on my laptop and then of course forgot to bring it, so this one will have to do. Everything is going very well. The students are amazing! It was quite entertaining pronouncing all their names on Monday, the most challenging one being L'Tongchamwaki. I still don't think he understands me when I say his name class, but I make sure to enunciate the waki really clearly! I am constantly dirty, no change there and I [View Full Entry]

On safari Africa » Tanzania
Our journey from Nairobi to Arusha, Tanzania, took hours and hours. The roads were AWFUL! They were being resurfaced for miles and miles which meant that half of the road (the parts that were finished) were lovely and smooth, and the other parts we were taken to a rough road alongside the main road which was basically just a rocky path. Inside the bus we were being thrown about all over the place, even though we were only travelling about 20 miles an hour. Fiona and I were at the back of the bus - behind the back wheels - so [View Full Entry]

Hello again! I bet you thought you'd heard the last of Long Distance Laura. Well, I never got round to posting photos of the last phases of my trip: an unforgettable week on Zanzibar with my sister Rachel; a couple of crazy weeks travelling around Lake Victoria with my friend Yvonne; and going on safari in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. As most of you know, after a summer of freelancing, I am about to start a new full-time job at IMG Artists in West London, so it's time to knuckle down once more - until the next adventure. Some of [View Full Entry]

We have arrived! Africa » Tanzania » Zanzibar
Well you will be pleased to hear we arrived safely in Tanzania! The flights were really good, but very long! I forgot how long 12 hours in a plane actually is - luckily we got to spread out over 4 seats so took turns sleeping. Flying into South Africa was strange for me. It brought back all sorts of memories of flying out as a child of 8! (like 100 years ago). Part of me felt like I was coming home - loved hearing people talking Africaans around me and swapping easily between it and English several times in a conversation! [View Full Entry]

Holding sleeping babies at church
This last week and a half has been a rollercoaster of experiences and emotions. On Monday we went into town to do some shopping and run some errands. My love for the city of Mwanza grows every time I visit. The streets are always busy and the colors always bright. Because there were six of us wageni, we stood out like sore thumbs, especially me with my blonde hair. However, we were able to buy lots of fabric to have skirts and kangas (wrap around cloths) made. I admit I go a bit crazy in the fabric shops with so many [View Full Entry]

It's been a while since we were able to update this due to some pretty poor internet connections. We're now in Zimbabwe, but that will have to be written later! we crossed into Tanzania and headed straight for Arusha in the north of the country, it's the nearest town to the Ngorongoro Crater National Park, where we went for a game drive and saw plenty of buffalo, giraffe and elephants. The next day we went to the Serengeti National Park, again there were plenty of animals, we saw Lions stalking prey, Elephant herds wandering the savannahs, Hippos swimming in the lakes [View Full Entry]

So I had a wonderful blog entry all typed and ready to post in the Amsterdam airport, only to have the connection fail just as I was about to post it! Great. I was commenting on my long ass flight that seriously showed the worse movies with the only highlight being Ryan Reynolds. I also finally realized the outfit I was wearing while in route and seriously have to question my early morning fashion sense. I had two shades of green on, how did Dianey let me leave the house looking like that? Devil Wears Prada I think not. At least [View Full Entry]
