Background: Shortly after independence, Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged to form the nation of Tanzania in 1964. One-party rule came to an end in 1995 with the first democratic elections held in the country since the 1970s. Zanzibar's semi-autonomous status and popular opposition have led to two contentious elections since 1995, which the ruling party won despite international observers' claims of voting irregularities.

Here is where I try to sell myself through my writing, so that you feel inspired to follow along on my adventures. For my family, and all of you who know I’m not so much a phone person, it’s the best way to keep in touch while I’m away. You can post comments and send me messages and stuff on the site too. How is that different from email? Well, to be honest, I'm not sure how many personal emails I will get to write during my stay in the Tanzanian Children’s Village. They have limited electricity, the only source of [View Full Entry]

9/9 - 18/9 Our 7 hour bus trip from Arusha to the coast was going relatively smoothly (well, as much as is possible in Tanzania …lots of unsurfaced roads, driving on the other side for no apparent reason and hair raising overtaking) until just outside Tanga when the bus gave up the ghost. We waited for a while but lost faith in the guy wielding a rusty looking wrench so decided to jump on a dala dala - a kind of mini-bus that drives even more crazily than the main buses and takes anything that breathes - ie people, chicken, goats… [View Full Entry]

In Tanzania now Africa » Tanzania » West » Kigoma
My trip began luckily, just before buying a bus ticket I learned of a friend traveling to Mpika (about 3/4 of the way to Mpulungu) on Monday morning. She, kindly, agreed to give me a ride and so for the first time I traveled without waking at some horrible hour of morning, no legs pressed against my legs, no shoulders invading my shoulders' territory, no babies being changed on my lap (actually happened the last time I went to Mpika) and instead rode in a spacious leather seat with air-conditioning comfortably (and free!) to the North. As we drove the season [View Full Entry]

Licence to kill!! Africa » Tanzania » North » Arusha
Oh and a quick one just to inform everyone of the coolest thing in the world! In Tanzania you can get a licence to kill!!!! If someone steals your money, car or goat/cow whatever, you can go to the police who are really lazy so they will issue you a licence saying if you ever see the person again, you have permission to kill him! That is seriously great (and totally awful I know) but you can actually have chance at being 007.. But people around here are not shy to kill people tho. Alice who lives out in nowhere saw [View Full Entry]

Eid Mubarak to all, belatedly, for last weekend :) For us Eid brought with it the benefits of a long weekend and the promise of fun and frolicks in the hills of Morogoro with the hash -Dar Hash House Harriers, for those asking the inevitable question... So we set off a bit late on Saturday morning in Franklin my beloved Rav4, and when we get to Chalinze and stop at teh usual garage we find half of the rest of the hashers all also stopped there and feeding on sambusas, beer and bright orange fanta. The buggers were all late too, [View Full Entry]

The Serengeti!!! Africa » Tanzania » North » Mwanza
As this week wraps up, I head to a church festival in the small town of Lugeye to witness hours full of singing and dancing. However, some interesting things have happened in the past few days… The Serengeti!! Unfortunately my photos aren’t loading onto my blog at the moment so I will have to try and paint the best picture I can. We (Chris, Ashley, Jessica, the two Sweds, and I) all woke up at 5:30am - before the sun rose - on Wednesday and loaded up the car with supplies. We all piled into the car and drove down the [View Full Entry]

Zanzibar and Mt Kilimanjaro! Africa » Tanzania » North » Arusha
So Alice and I go to Zanzibar on Wednesday!! and we start climbing Kili in a week and 3 days. Shit. Can't wait. In the next three days I'll be living by the ATMs as we both have to pay for Kili (1000 USD) and get money out to last us in Zanzibar as apparently VISA sucks there and you cant get any money out. Which is really weird since it's a tourist haven. The ATM of course has a daily limit and often they dont work so I'm gonna take as much out as poss today, tmr and tuesday. I [View Full Entry]

Tue - Sep 15th No breakfast or lunch today as I am still full from Carnivore. Long drive and border crossing into Tanzania today. It was lame. Everyone else had to pay $50 for the visa to get into Tanzania but I had to pay $100 for being from the US. Lame. Then it was a long drive into Tanzania to make our way to Meserani Snake Park in Arusha. Snake park had a pub that was a lot like Lake Mahinapua's [url=http://www.travelblog.org/Photos/197 [View Full Entry]

I've done the most amazing buy - a camera with film! I thought I was buying a disposable camera for 20000 tsh but it turned out to be a film camera, even better! so I've bought a load of film rolls so i can start retaking a lot of my lost pics. Only problem is that you cant zoom, you have just lean in closer .. Have also been (almost) convinced into climbing Mt Kilimanjaro.. I'm hesitating because it costs A LOT (see approx 1000 USD!) and i'm not sure if my fitness levels are quite up to it after some [View Full Entry]
