Na toll, faengt ja gut an.

We just read over our previous entry regarding our Kilimanjaro climb and realized that it sounded quite negative... We just wanted to reiterate that it was an incredible experience, but the positives are much harder to describe in a blog than the negatives - especially without pictures! We will share pictures when we get home. Today we began our safari with our guide, Sammy. We arrived at Tarangire National Park at around noon, and went on a game drive for a couple of hours before lunch. Then we checked into the Tarangire Sopa Lodge, and went on another game drive until sunset. We saw lots of wildebeest, giraffe, zebra, water buffalo, elephants, baboons, and impala, as well as various other types of antelope and birds. Christie was very excited about seeing a bush hyrax. No, he's ... read more

Caribu sana again !!! This was our first National park and safari in the jeep with open roof. I really loved it. I was all the time standing up in order to see the magnificence of this nature. I felt like a communion deep in me. We were eager to see zebras, elephants, lions, girage, monkeys and more, and we did !!!! I also loved the colors of various greens, the hugeness of the sky, the color of the earth, red, marron, dark red..... We went to our first massai cow market !!! They wanted to sell us and make on measure shoes made of old goodyear tire !!! We should have done it! In fact it's very practical. The adventure continues next.......Hakunamatata !! Safari time! We flew from Zanzibar to Arusha (the plane was only two hours late), then transferred to Masai Camp, a campsite and safari company. We were booked on a 6 day safari with Tropical Trails which would take us to some of Tanzania's world famous national parks. Early Tuesday morning, we loaded our gear into a Land Cruiser and along with our guide, Stephen, and cook, Kasim, set off for Tarangire National Park. En route we stopped for a morning tea of fried green bananas and goats intestines. No kidding. Kind of tasted like pork crackling, but that could have just been all the salt I poured on it. While I went to the (squat) toilet James walked to the car and was besieged by women trying to sell him beaded necklaces and wood carvings. ... read more

Monday Morning- YMCA canteen My new friends and I had breakfast at the Y this morning and excitedly talked about how nice our trip would be. We hoped that since it took so much time and energy to plan that it would pay off in a great Safari trip. The problem that most people encounter with safaris is that the animals don't make the same plans to see YOU! So you may or may not see as many depending on weather, dry season and migration. But anyhow, we were amped and ready to see the BIG FIVE. (Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Rhino, and Buffalo) We started out our day late, with much preparation at the Safari Co. office. We had to pay our balance and wait while they packed equipment, shopped for food and picked up the ... read more

Saturday 5th February We had early breakfast, for us that is, at 8 am. Paul lives a musician's life with staying up late at night and getting up late in the morning, and we tend to follow suit as a family. It creates problems with school and work, but all is relative anyway. This whole trip was good training for us as we got up early every morning, and I must say Paul has kept it up here at home as well this last week. The hotel (its real name is Spices & Herbs Ethiopian Hotel and Restaurant) has a wonderful African Grey Parrot, sitting in a cage in the dining room. It talks a lot and is very friendly; one can stroke its head without getting bitten. My parents-in-law have an African Grey called Twifo ... read more

Ngorongoro crater NP Finally we came to Simba Camp on the crater rim. Ngorongoro is a huge crater, 20km in diameter... From rim you have great views on the crater and mountains beyond. We were quite high, as I believe altitude was around 2700m above sea level. Besides, we had the best hotel, a thousand stars one...  I thought on the rim will be quieter than in Serengeti... how I was wrong... again  Strange voices, sounds, roars, throughout the night... again... Night was very chilly, no wonder as were quite high up. Infrastructure in camp was almost non-existent. Yes, there were some shacks called toilets and something that resembled a shower. After another tasty breakfast we headed down the crater. Road was narrow, twisty and steep... For fans of adrenaline... As soon as we ... read more
