Taragire park Three hour drive with stop at Tanzanite shop. Mostly paved roads finally, until reaching park. Very interesting views of African villages. Park full of elephants by the thousands. Another close encounter with cheetahs. Accomodations in tented camp with view of river valley with large numbers of elephants and giraffes. Linda has already asked them to respray for possible bugs and spiders.Tomorrow early start to Arusha to catch flight to Stonetown on Zanzibar. We are ready for a few days of relaxation on the beach without drives on dusty roads... read more

Day 10/11 The next day, we again set of early to drive to Tarangire NP. It was less cloudy than the day before, but still cold, so in anticipation that the day would improve, we had several layers we could take off. At least with the altitude it had meant no possibility of being bitten by mosquitos, its too cold for them to breed that high up. It was a 2 1/2hour drive to the park, and Sylvester had said that we would be making a stop on the way for shopping at one of the best shops in the area. Upto that point, apart from the hotel shops which were very expensive, we hadnt stopped for any souveniers. The men of the party were worried.... Actually, whilst some of the goods in the shop were ... read more

We checked out from our lodge in the morning at 8:00am. After exchanged some cash at Arusha’s city center, we headed west to Tarangire National Park. Half an hour later, we already left the majestic Mt. Meru behind, now we were surrounded by the open plain dotted with Maasai villages. The village normally consists of several thatched huts with low roof and a cattle or sheep pen. As Justin and us got more familiar, our topics of discussion started touching things of his life, such as his family and what he did for living. He became very angry when he told us about the government corruption and unfairness in the society. He is quite a passionate person. It has been very cloudy since we left Arusha. Rain started about 1 hour after we were on our ... read more

Hello I spent the day at Tarangire National park yesterday. wow! It feels a bit surreal with so many animals I have seen in movies, books, doco and Zoo's just walking around n the wild. The landscapes was so beautiful, it is great the wet season has just started as the trees have flowers and new green shoots to add contrast to the landscape. The Baobab trees are over 300 yrs old, the large ones, and incredible. They are hollow inside! The tall flat topped trees are Acacia's, different type then in Aust. Of course the wildlife took the show, so many to see for the first time I didn't know where to look and was hard to all take in. We saw, mongoose, Elephants, Impala, Wildebeest, Water Buffalo, Kipi, 1 lion resting in the shade ... read more

... read more

The lodge I stayed at last night was on the rim of Ngorongoro Crater at 7,400 feet. The Crater floor is at 5,400 feet. I believe on the drive down it only takes about 6,000 feet of road to drop the 2,000 feet. I don't believe the road would meet U.S. safety standards. When I got to the room the heat was on and the bed had two heavy blanks. I have determined that when it gets below 65 it is considered winter. Then they came and put in a hot water bottle while you were at dinner. I had to remove both blanks and the hot water bottle in order to sleep. This morning I would say it was somewhere in that 45 to 50 range at 5:45 a.m. when I got up. Not bad ... read more

We decided to organize our safari in Arusha and not pre-book from abroad for various reasons. Usually, foreign bookings end up costing a premium price because the safari operators know they have the "knowledge advantage" when dealing at a distance. They also know your time is limited in trying to research everything online. Furthermore, we were still in a world wide recession, and wanted to guage for ourselves how busy and how flexible the safari companies were based on how many other tourists were around Arusha. We don't know how much we saved by just showing up in Arusha and booking locally, vs. if we'd prearranged everything on the Internet. In the end, we ended up going with our original choice of safari company, as the competition didn't seem too eager to meet our requirements. Also, ... read more
