Day 14, 15 & 16 Our final day with the tour group was a grey one. Despite the assurances of Kim, the day was dark and dreary and quite cold. We started with a trip to a temple in Tokyo, which had an impressive gate at the entrance. It was still quite early, so the boulevard of shops where not all open, meaning there was less to distract everyone. We had a go at our fortune, where you shake up a wooden box of sticks and through a small hole one pops put. On the stick is a kanji which you match to the ones on the wall and take the paper fortune of the matching one. Kathryn got very bad luck not once but twice. We tied it up, and left it there, hoping the ... read more

Day 13 When we eventually located breakfast, after being on so many different floors, it was in what looked like an old ballroom, with red velvet drapes and balconies. There was a reslly nice view out over the sea and the hotel actually had its own small waterfall. There was a bit of scrum for window seats, and even more of one at the buffet. We left our last Onsen hotel behind, and started the long drive to our next destination at Hakone. We had been advised that it was to be a winding road, and as we left we immediately started to climb up and out of the valley, and once again the scenery was stunning. We eventually reached the bottom of the volcano, and we were to take a cable car to the top. It ... read more

Day 12 The morning began with an even earlier wake up call than the day before, as the guide had got nervous about the queue for breakfast the day before - 6am was a little extreme. Our first visit of the day was to the Fushimi Inari Shrine, whose gates featured in the film "Memoirs of a Geisha". The torii gates that we had seen earlier in the trip, were impressive for their size, whilst here it was the sheer number. At one point there are two tunnels of gates, all of which have been donated by companies hoping for luck in their business. The gates continue for about 4km and there are more than 10,000 of them, which are wooden and replaced every 10 years. It was certainly one of the best sights we had ... read more

Day 11 Once again we were up early as we had to go to the station to buy tickets for the "romantic" train joureny from Arashiyama to Torroko. It was a clear day, but the temperature had dropped quite a bit, meaning that those of the tour group from south of the equator were frozen! The tour company had tried to buy the tickets in advance, but they had all been taken by the large Japanese tour companies. There was however, one car for un-reserved tickets that is open air. We were there that early, the shutters were still down. Our tour guide managed to get tickets, but for standing only. We got onto the train, and the conductor, dressed as a devil, ushered a couple of the party to seats. To be honest we were ... read more

Day 10 When we awoke, we were greeted by the sight of rain, buckets of it. The sky was extremely grey, and there didn't look to be any breaks in the cloud. During breakfast, we tried to look for any likely candidates that might be joining our tour, and managed to spot a couple of candidates. When we made our way to the lobby with our luggage, our predictions we correct, and we had gained 2 new couples. Our new guide Kim greeted us, and informed us that we would be picking up one more person at another hotel in Osaka city, before heading our to our first stop. The traffic was awful, partly because of the rain, also it was Monday, and there had been a Labour Day holiday on the Friday, so lots of ... read more

Day 9- Breakfast was a mostly Japanese affair, with a little fruit, but no yogurt. There were some rolls you could toast, and the butter and jam came in a squeezy packet removing the need for a knife, but meaning you had to have both parts. As we left the hotel, the sun had not come up on this side of the gorge, and the cloud was down. We went through a tunnel to the other side of the mountain, and it was bathed in sunshine. Our first stop was the bridge at Kazura-bashi which dates from 12th century during a time when they were made from mountain vines and bamboo so they could get cut down to block an enemy attack. It is 45m long, and the vines are replaced every 3 years. It does ... read more

Day 8 We had an even earlier start to the day, as we needed to set off to catch a ferry to the next island. Breakfast was on the top floor of the hotel, which they had open early for us. It was even more Japanese than usual, and we find the concept of a tray and plastic plate a little odd. We managed some toast and fruit, but there was no yogurt, and the egg that I was going to try turned out to be raw rather than hard boiled. We met in the lobby, and set out for the ferry. On the way, we went through countless tunnels - all of which have a name - and through mountainous regions and again, the autumn colours were outstanding. We were on time for the ferry, ... read more

Day 7 When we woke up, the weather had taken a turn for the worse, and it was decididly murky outside. Breakfast was good again, with bread rolls, but no toaster! We packed up and headed downstairs, the temperature had certainly dropped and it was beginning to drizzle. Our first stop of the day was Mount Aso. We drove for a couple of hours through the countryside, and passed some lovely autumn trees, bamboo, and saw the grasses that make the tatami mats that form the flooring in a traditional Japanese home. Actually it is part of a series of 5 volcanic cones. The existing crater is 128km in circumferance, where volcanos had previously erupted leaving a huge crater floor. The active volcano (Mt Nakadake) was the one we were hoping to see. As we started ... read more

Day 6 After another reasonable breakfast, even though there was no toaster, we made our way downstairs to the coach, which was parked on a nearby bridge as the road along side the hotel was too narrow. As we were leaving, we were waved off by two of the hotel staff - the thing to remember is the custom is to keep on waving until you can no longer see them! We had a 2 hour journey to Nagasaki, where we would be visiting the site of the 2nd atom bomb detonation. Along the way we were entertained by our guide Lim, whom we now realise is completly mad. Aswell as explaining to us that we were going for a "see look" at different places that day, and that when we stop for a toilet break ... read more

Day 5 Our wake up call at 6.15am was not very welcome, but the guide was insistant. We went for breakfast on the top floor of the hotel, in the Sky Lounge, which had a 360deg view of Hiroshima bay. We watched the sun rise above the mountains, whilst enjoying a good breakfast of fruit, rolls and yogurt. We even had the option of an omlette if we wanted. We met in the lobby at 7.45 for an 8am departure. The temperature had certainly dropped, and although there was a clear sky and it was sunny, it was cold. We set off for the Hiroshima Peace Memorial and Museum. When we got off the bus, the first thing we saw was the ghostly image of the A Dome building. It was very close to the hypocentre ... read more
