Day 19/20 - Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay What should we do today? I know lets go to Uruguay! Well let's just say it wasn't quite planned like that but almost. We had actually decided around four or five o'clock the previous day that a trip over the water may not be such a crazy idea after all. We had briefly mentioned the idea back home in the UK, but dismissed the idea out of hand as unrealistic. It was only after talking with Roger and Lynn on one of our numerous coach journeys, who had been to Buenos Aires before and were making the trip themselves on their first free day in the city, that the idea started bubbling in our heads. But for us at that point it was still a bit of a whim. ... read more

Day 18 - Buenos Aires We went down for breakfast, and were slightly disappointed with the choice. As for the coffee, it was undrinkable, as the water has that limey flavour. Over breakfast we consulted the map and guide book to decide which places we wanted to visit. Whilst there are a lot of places you can visit, it depends on what interest you have. I suppose on the "not to be missed" list is the cemetary where all the famous politicians, generals and presidents are buried. We walked on what was a hot day, to the Cementerio de la Recoleta, and were greeted at the entrance by a lady selling maps of the vaults - creepy i know. The proceeds go towards the upkeep of the cemetary which has been in use since the mid ... read more

Day 16 - El Calafate Rest Day And on the sixteenth day, they rested! We had no excursions booked, and so had a more leisurely breakfast, but were most surprised to see Vera at breakfast. Having woken feeling a little under the weather, she decided not to go on the full day tour, and was also going to have a rest day. We caught the first bus of the day into town, and from our drop off point, we went to have a look at the nature reserve to see if we could get closer to the flamingos that we had seen from our hotel window. In exposed places, the wind was really strong, and on the way to the reserve it picked up significantly. The infrastructure round the nature reserve is still being built, so ... read more

Day 15- Perito Moreno Glacier Well all we can say is "there are Glaciers and then there are Glaciers". We were totally blown away by what we saw today and i suppose that's why the Perito Moreno glacier is one of the most famous glaciers in the world. In our humble opinion rightly so, and by now we had seen a number of galciers on our trip. The Perito Moreno glacier is special not just because it is the only glacier in Patagonia that is still advancing and that is impressive on it's own, but as a spectical it is just about as awe inspiring as you can get and there are bigger glaciers out there but not quite like this one. There is the pyramids at Giza and the Taj Mahal in Agra, but this ... read more

The pick up was not as early as we thought it might me, given that the bus ride was to be about 5 hrs, and we had an 4x4 excursion booked for the afternoon which was supposed to be for 3 hours. We were collected, and the luggage loaded on the bus, not that there seemed to be an awful lot of room for the bags, but they managed to get them on. After about 30minutes, the guide announced that we had reached the first part of the border control on the Chilean side, where they could ask to go through every bag. Luckily, it must have been break time, as they allowed us to just queue and have our passports stamped. We then drove for about 20 minutes through i suppose no-mans land until we ... read more

Day 13 - Grey Glacier It was an early start - 6am, which meant that we missed breakfast. We had instead, asked for a packed breakfast to be provided by the hotel. Our companions for the trip, Roger and Lynne, came down after us, and i had already retrieved our breakfast. "Ive got beakfast", i said to Roger. "ill just get ours then", "No, ive got it all", "All in that one paper bag", "Yes...." and i waited until the bag was opened and they could appreciate the quality of the breakfast provided - one ham and cheese sandwich each and an orange. Lynne took this to reception and said "this is terrible", "i know" the receptionist replied, "thereś not even a drink, "i know" the receptionist replied.... What do you do? We got on the ... read more

Day 12 - Torres del Paine We went down for breakfast, which was a little disappointing, during which our chocolate biscuit offering was repaid in the form of the chocolate buscuit box from the LAN flight and a thank you message from Roger and Lynn that read "To services to the community with grateful thanks, repayment with intrest" which we found very amusing. We went downstairs and there were three mini buses waiting to take us out for the day. Our guide was called Carlos, and he explained that our first stop was to be at a bridge to see some of the flora and fauna. On our way out of the hotel, towards the entrance to the National Park, we saw a condor, which everyone tried to get a good shot of. At the park ... read more

Day 11- Puerto Natales to Torres del Paine Yet another early start was met with slight disappointment. We were met by our guide and taken down to meet the boat that was to take us up a fyord before transferring to zodiac speed boats up the Rio Serrano to our hotel. We were told it was simply too rough as the wind had not got any lighter, and whilst the boat would have not sunk, their concern was that we would all have been seasick. We were taken to the offices of the company running the tour and asked to return at 9am when they were going to formulate an alternative plan. There was very little open in the way of cafes or shops whilst we waited for the new plan, so we wandered looking through ... read more

Day 10- Traveling down to the Magallanes region The next day, we went to the airport to catch our flight to Punta Arenas. Despite this being a lunchtime flight, our good fortune with the food didn´t last, and all we were served was a box containing chocolate biscuits! Not very substantial when you hadn´t eaten since breakfast. The landing was a little hairy, as there was a 120kph wind blowing, which is windy even for there. We were met at the airport, and put into buses for the 3.5hr transfer to Puerto Natales. The other travellers in the bus was those staying at the same hotel as us, the rest were staying in a hotel a bit further out of town. On the way, we saw lots of ranches and at periodic points along the road, ... read more

Day 9- Vina Casas del Bosque & Valparaiso After breakfast at the hotel, which was a busy affair, we waited in the lobby of the hotel to be picked up. We were sort of waiting to see if we had been rumbled, and we were going to be asked to pay for the trip - luck was on our side. Our Guide explained that we would be travelling out of Santiago into the Casablanca Valley to a Winery, tasting a couple of wines, having lunch and then going to Valparaiso. During the journey, and into the valley, we could see that much of the land was used for growing fruit, olives and almonds. We were also told that because the vineyards lie in a valley , it is especially good for growing white wine due to ... read more
