After we left Tarangire we headed to our next park, Lake Manyara. To get there we drove thru the villages and towns that can be found between the two. This allowed to get a glimpse at the rural Tanzanian life. We drove past banana trees and fields of sesame. Small kids in the villages waved at us as we drove past. We saw women doing laundry in streams, men and boys herding goats and cattle, people on bikes caring huge containers of water from the local water source and women wearing colourful clothing carrying everything from buckets of water, bundles of sticks, baskets of produce or their daily shopping on their heads. It's an amazing skill. Almost immediately after entering this park we came upon a family of elephants eating in the trees. We stopped to ... read more

Didn't go for any games today. Went to souvenir shops and bought a dish thingy as a memorabilia from Tanzania instead. Had lunch at the Impala Hotel and managed to call mum. Oh yea, managed to call dad in the morning. I'm at the palace hotel now. When the driver dropped me off, I gave him a $70 tip and took a picture with him and his jeep. I got someone from the hotel to buy my batteries and phone credits, and even sent my dirty clothes off for laundry. I repacked my bags and am now just waiting for my laundry to get back. I'm hoping it's on time and that nothing would happen. I don't think I can afford to lose my laundry now. I had a panic attack just now in the room ... read more

Part 1 I'm in a really cool tent. Like really really cool. It's a hotel room, but in a tent! There's loads of mosquitoes here so I have to be careful. Also, I didn't realise that I would be on a safari trip myself. I thought that I would be meeting up with other people. No wonder it was so expensive. My driver/guide is called Molel ( I don't actually know how to spell his name). He's quite nice. Anyway, the village that I'm staying in is called Mto wa Mbu - River of Mosquitoes. On my way to the Migunga Camp, I saw loads of cattles, goats and donkeys and little children were herding them. Those kids have to grow up so fast. The scenery here is definitely very different from home. As I'm writing ... read more

Er meinte nur: "Not Bad, not good". Ok damit kann ich leben. Trotzdem wieder etwas gelernt 40% vom ... read more

Day 6 We met after breakfast at the very civilised time of 8am. We had been expecting some early starts, so it made for a more leisurely ease into things. We changed places in the jeep today, which is standard practise on safaris so everyone gets a turn in each place. This meant it was our day at the font of the jeep. On our way out of the lodge, a small boy was trying to sell us a chameleon, which we debated whether just to buy and release further down the road. Our day started with a game drive in Lake Manyara NP. The park is approx 330sq km, of which 230km is the lake. The remainder is tall forest and woodland, and it is home to the largest concentration of baboons anywhere in the ... read more

Met up with the group I would be travelling with. 2 girls from US, a couple from US and a Canadian girl then fought our way through the crazy traffic in Arusha, thereafter a 2 hour drive to our camp above the Lake Manyara reserve. We go on our first gamedrive around lake Manyara, a soda lake with lots of flamingoes. The park is quite small but has tree climbing lions, giraffe, elephant Zebra etc so great for a first taste of safari. The campsite is a permanent one so tents are pitched on a concrete pad with camp beds, all very comfortable and Captain Delicious, aka Charles the Cook excels himself with a 4 course dinner.... read more

Lake Manyara is a lovely area, and the perfect place to start serious safari. There is plenty to see in this lake region! Tanzania's national animal is the giraffe, and they are EVERYWHERE, which suits me fine since they are my very favorite. I've seen them in zoos, but nothing compares to giraffes in the wild. The Maasai giraffe is the national symbol of Tanzania and it is much darker than the other subspecies. The pattern is also a bit different, almost more geometrical than spotted. They are the epitome of gracefulness, and they seem gracious about allowing one close to take photos. Ah. So beautiful! Lake Manyara has its share of elephants! They, too, are everywhere. Some of them have incredibly huge tusks. Unlike the Indian elephant, the African elephants, male and female, have tusks. ... read more

Well, the jacarandas are in bloom and the rain is here- everything has gone green and I find myself feeling less homesick for the 'green green grass of home' aka 'the green and pleasant land' (I frequently sing 'Jerusalem' to Benjamin and other equally patriotic songs which seem to jump from my schooldays and in to my head now that I am a Mother and in those desperate hours trying to sing my son to sleep!). Since my last blog we have ventured to Lake Manyara National Park. Famous for its' tree climbing lions apparently and yes we did (from a distance) see a lioness sunbathing at height. We did however, also see a lion in a tree in Tarangire National Park so it would appear that the marketing needs to catch up with the lions ... read more

Affordable Rustic Tent Safari--Ask for Details Inside!! Normally, these ads plastered everywhere in the major tourist hubs would speak to the adventurers in us but having just gotten our fill of tents on Kilimanjaro just days earlier, we set out find more comfortable accommodations. The tourism industry in these countries are well aware they have the market cornered when it comes to wildlife safaris and it’s a “must do” so the prices can be shocking. However, we felt the cost of having our own driver/tour was worth it. We had embarked on past safaris where it only took one annoying member in a group tour to grate your nerves to the point of attempted murder. The 5-star treatment allowed us to take in the animals at our leisure and give very specific instructions to the driver. ... read more
