Well most of you are probably aware by now that my big African adventure for 2010 has actually come to an end and I'm now back in Auckland working away trying to save up for my next holiday :-) But I hate leaving anything unfinished so here are the last days of our trip......... We left Tofo very early in the morning....not as early as the 4 am we had initially been told, but we were waiting from 3am for the bus to leave. We finally got going at about 5 but the conductor then proceeded to tout for extra business...we can't have the chapa with a few empty seats all the way to Maputo apparently! So to cut a long story short about 9 hours later, with a few piglets along for the ride (boy ... read more

So I am coming off my best weekend in Swaziland yet. It started with an important Friday at the old Family Life Association of Swaziland in Manzini. We were anxiously awaiting a visit from someone from PEPFAR/USAID to visit our clinic. Low and behold the American Ambassador rocks up, as does the Minister of Health, along with some extra important people from additional NGOs. I was the official photographer for the event, roaming around like an annoying person snapping photos left right and centre. Highlight was a tour through the new Male Circumcision Theatre (operating room for us Canadians) and we got to wear booties and put sexy wraps on our heads. Everyone looked ridiculous; I loved it. Funny moment when I was gossiping at the back and the Ambassador says “Sharman, come take a picture ... read more

In Swaziland the word Mlungu means white person. This doesn’t appear to be a derogatory word; it just is what it is. I’ve learned that Swazis are all about the labels. I am white; therefore I am aMlungu. People shout this at me, children yell it to me when we visits schools... the list goes on. In Canada, people can’t agree that Caucasian is a race, but here everything is black, white or coloured. We were driving in a work van and our driver cut through the pedestrian stop (no one stops for pedestrians in this country), and some guy yelled “Take your white people and go!” in SiSwati. My coworkers pissed themselves laughing and then translated for us. Sarah and I started the same week at FLAS. Sarah and I do not look alike; however, ... read more

Work life has been crazy busy since I last wrote, but my social life has been... well just crazy. When I last left you I was in jeopardy of spending my weekend without electricity and worried about eviction as my roommates organization failed to pay rent on time. With Stephen out of the country I was totally freaking, but got things sorted on Friday and thankfully I came home to our beautiful apartment which still had electricity. His colleague who I called said “oh, I meant to pay that on Monday.” Please note that still would have been 11 days late. Saturday I got to put in some OT when my intern Ace called me to tell me we needed life stories for a report on the male circumcision project. I interviewed him on his circumcision ... read more

Well it was pretty hard to get into the swing of work last week following a taste of the beach in Cape Vidal, especially since the weather was crap and cold all week. I was excited about the prospect of submitting an article for the Swazi Times, but had been cancelled on by my contact there a couple of times and thought it wasn’t going to happy. Well, let me tell you something about Swazi Culture. Everything here is hurry up and wait. Everything! On Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 I heard from Thombile at the Times. Sort of hard on the phone to pitch my story as people don’t understand me in person, phone calls with my accent are downright brutal. Well, I caught this much. She wanted 1500 words on something to go in the ... read more

Well everyone, it has been awhile since I have updated the old blog so let me get you up to date. I came back to Canadia in March, feeling pretty gross. Fast forward to the end of May and I had the most devastating news to date - I have celiac disease. The girl who loves to eat can no longer have bread, cookies, cakes, or anything containing gluten. In the meantime I applied for a CIDA internship with Canadian Crossroads International, was slightly delayed as I was diagnosed with another auto-immune disease called Graves, but the doctors ok’d me and bang... here I find myself with a six-month communications internship in the Kingdom of Swaziland. After a fun bbq send off on the August long weekend... my mom dropped me off at the airport on ... read more

Monday (19/7/2010) We woke to a beautiful sunny day and set out to explore Port Elizabeth. Lungile was just a short stroll/jog to the beach, we wandered along the beach front stopping at Tiffany’s for breakfast (it seemed appropriate overlooking the all but flat ocean). We continued along the beach boardwalk past shops and café’s until the boardwalk ran out then we continued along the beach right up to the lighthouse. We spotted some dolphins surfing just off shore and decided it was time to turn back our stroll had turned into a three hour walk meaning it was time for lunch. A quick stop at the supermarket and we soaked up a bit more sunshine. Back at Lungile we showered before trying our luck at the Boardwalk Casino. Not needing to check anything into the ... read more

Early on, I felt awkward taking photos of these women. But they insisted “Hello! Photo of me!” they would say. After a while with 15000 women singing and dancing passionately to traditional songs, my initial shyness would subside. I was at one of Southern Africa’s great festivals and my right index finger was getting a workout. Snapping up some photos to confirm my bragging rights - I had just seen the Umhlanga (Reed) Festival… And it has nothing to do with the fact that most of the women were topless. I don’t care what you say. The Umhlanga Festival is an ancient festival that generally gets coverage by western media for its obvious assets to get our attention. Half naked women roaming around is one. As well as that the King sometimes chooses a wife at ... read more

Monday, 28 June 2010 Swaziland Had a great night sleep for a change, warm, comfy, woke just after 6am fully rested so got up and last quick check of internet to see about Portugal Morocco options. Still don’t know. Will visit travel agent in Jo’burg. Then Michael was there as I was leaving and he walked me to Banana BP which was nice. Baz Bus wasn’t too late. An awesome day already. Wasn’t too sociable on the bus and I have a chest cough which is bad, but the bloke behind me keeps coughing without covering his mouth and I get a gust of wind onto the back of my head which is horrid! Oh, meant to mention too at HQ, it was awesome that it was finally the boys queuing for the toilets at bus ... read more

Swaziland is a 6 hour drive North West of Durban, the border is a totally different experience to Lesotho. There are no shacks in site, just monstrous new buidlings and lots of officials and police. Hawkins manages to annoy three of them, so I worry we may not be allowed in. First he decides to stop 500m from the junction so a police man tells him it's an offence to park in the middle of the road, they don't know that Hawkins has some weird phobia of stopping close to cars, traffic lights, junctions... Next he pulls up next to another police man, and uses his multi tasking skills to close the window in his face rather than open it wider, this has already been a problem at all toll booths where he can't open the ... read more
