Hello all! Apparently my last blog didn't email subscribers for some reason? But you should read about my near-death experiences below - they're pretty funny! This actually is gonna be a quick one coz I'm in an internet cafe and have only paid for an hour, and still have some facebook action to catch up on :P FUNNY/INTERESTING THINGS THAT HAVE HAPPENED THIS WEEK (IN INGWAVUMA): There is a dog in one of the houses outside the school gate, and it's fine when we are walking home at normal school hours with all the other kids, but when we srtay late to do drama or hockey and walk home it attacks us!! We ran away the first time and it chased us for ages, and the second time we were with a friend who got down ... read more

... read more

hey lieve mensen! Lara... read more

27 Oct - jump back aboard Priscilla, say farewell to Maputo, the sun is shining again and we cross the border from Mozambique into Swaziland. Stop at Pick n Pay, (yup they have supermarkets in Swaziland!) for essential birthday party supplies such as cake & champagne. ATM swallows my bank card, NOT amused but it gives me a chance to phone home and speak to mum and dad :) We arrive at Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary - much more laid back than some of the other parks we've visited. Rolling hills, lush countryside, red dirt roads, purple jacaranda trees and croc / hippo infested waters. As there are no lions or leopards in this park you can walk freely and lots of wildlife comes direct to your door. We check-in to our traditional Swazi accomodation - a ... read more

If the bullet enters through the head and combusts in the brain, I see the eyeballs of the impala are squished out of its sockets. If the bullet enters through the eyes, I don't see the eyes at all but a black space in the face. And if the bullet enters at the right part in the back of the brain, I see the brains actually a mess outside of the skull. I met Micky while shooting the clay pigeons the other day, and I didn't know he was being serious about letting us come culling impala with him. Micky is a pretty normal looking man, perhaps around 35 or 40, large set with a belly and a great big Santa Claus beard and mustache. He wears a camouflage fishing vest outside a cotton plaid shirt ... read more

Amy: So what's there to do in Swaziland? Rob: Mmmm... not much really I guess Amy: Uhhmm... OK then Rob: It'll be fun. We'll figure it out when you get here Amy: I guess I'll come tomorrow then A day later I find myself in Big Bend, a small town on the east side of Swaziland in Lebombo, clay-pigeon shooting with some really large bushmen. So I guess Swaziland wasn't really planned until the day before I came. I don't know I will be staying with the really cool Dr. Tim in his house with Rob, his wife, and two kids. I don't know too much about Swaziland and I have no idea what I will be doing in Swaziland. I don't know how long I'm staying and I have no scheduled departure date. I don't ... read more

It's been 2 weeks since the last entry so i've got quite alot to catch up on. I'm actually in Malawi now, arrived today, but more of that later. Following the sports day i splashed out on a night of luxury at a chalet not far from lidwala. Had been feeling rough and wanted the luxury of a bath. The place was gorgeous, a 2 bedroom wood cabin with kitchen, living room and bathroom set amongst woods and horse paddocks. I cooked my dinner over a braai and it turned out much better than my usual efforts at bbqs back home. Only cost 500E (35 pounds) a night. On the downside, i had to go to the local clinic the next day - nothing too serious - so had another night of not doing much back ... read more

Leaving Lidwala lodge for a few days. I’m at the end of my pre-booked time here, but I am likely to be back on weekends. Was going to head for Ngwempisi gorge to do some hiking but had to delay as I’m feeling rotten - upset stomach troubles. Thought I’d be ok so went to the inter-ncp sports day organised by john, the sports centre volunteer, to chop veg for the kids’ lunch. Left early to get to Mbabane to extend my visa but felt rotten by the time I got to the lodge so decided to delay everything. Can go to Mbabane tomorrow and the gorge next week. Last Thursday was my last day building at mlandazwe. We had a fun morning squeezing mud between our toes and throwing it at the walls of the ... read more

I have a little time to write about Sunday’s quad-biking as we had to come back from the project early today. We were picked-up at 8 by a guy called Richard, an outspoken English expat who runs tours by car, bike and hike into the swazi countryside so that visitors can experience the ‘real’ Swaziland. We drove for about 45mins over to the other side of the Ezulwini valley to the mountain range where members of the swazi royal family are buried, also the site of a famous swazi military victory over the rampaging Zulus in the 19th century. That was one of the stories about Swaziland’s more recent history that Richard produced during the drive. He also pulled several millennia-old stone-age tools, discovered close-by, out of his glove compartment as he talked about the region’s ... read more

Awake early, I decided to get up to watch the sunrise over the mountains opposite. I settled myself on one of the huge boulders that lay strewn around the garden. The shadow on the slopes behind descends quickly. You feel a cold breeze on your back and warm air on your front as the yellow light in the sky intensifies over the peak. I watched a bird of prey soaring over the valley and storcks land in a nearby tree. The sun broke over the peak, the trees and plants in the garden below me were thrown into shadow and light, and I sat and meditated for ½ hour before breakfast. I’ll try to do that more often, and get some photos too. Yesterday was uneventful. The lid of the brick-press broke so I went with ... read more
