Hello all, I took the bus to Joburg today, and so far it's done little to impress. It's raining, and the power just came back on after having been off since I arrived at 3:00 today! My last 3 days in Swaziland were great, and I highly recommend that everyone go there if they can. The people are ridiculously friendly, and even a trip to the grocery store results in a few conversations. On Saturday we went to a jazz show in this incredible venue called House on Fire, which is a sort of art/sculpture gallery with all these mosaics, a stage, dance floor, lofts with tables......the place was packed and the music was amazing. At the end when we were waiting for our cab, two guys in traditional dress started chatting with us---they ended up ... read more

Hello from Swaziland! The trip here was loooong, but I finally made it on Wednesday night. I first stayed at a hostel called Sondzelas in a game reserve that had been recommended to me, but it was AWFUL (a lot of potential, but the staff were grumpy and it had no atmosphere). After a day myself and a Dutch girl named Saane moved to Swaziland Backpackers, which is nearby and so much better. It's been cloudy here but hot, and the first day we were pretty tired and didn't get up to much. We went for a walk though and saw some wildlife, including a mom and baby warthog which were pretty cute. On the bus drive here we also saw a whole bunch of giraffes, one of which ran across the road---their legs are so ... read more

The best things come in small packages We arrived in Swaziland by bus, changing our minds en-route about where exactly we were going. Having been used to the HUGE distances between towns in Mozambique we hadn’t quite down-scaled our thinking properly when it came to tiny Swazi and the travelling time between towns. So we ended up in Manzini, not actually the capital, but the busiest city in the country. Although it’s quite possible to spend a bit of time in Swaziland we really only had one reason for stopping on our way to South Africa - Rhinos. They had eluded us on all safaris so far and we were determined to spot at least one here. We were not disappointed. King to the rescue Between 1988 and 1991 eighty percent of all Swaziland’s rhinos were ... read more

Out of the 47 countries in the world which I have visited, the tiny Kingdom of Swaziland has to rate in my top 5. It is a fascinating mix of relatively wealthy whites and a few middle class blacks, and many fairly poor blacks and feels very friendly and relaxed. It is green and very beautiful and has influences from South Africa in its lifestyle and supermarket culture. It feels quite wealthy after countries such as Malawi. Unfortunately up to 40% of its population is reported to be HIV positive but in spite of this horrendous statistic and a very low average life expectancy, most Swazilanders seems cheerful, optimistic and friendly. Tom and I stayed at a great backpacker hostel called Legends which was very friendly and welcoming. We hired bicycles and cycled a fair old ... read more

The average life expectancy for a Swazi is now 32 years old. Swaziland is a stable, affluent, and peaceful nation. So why are people dying at my age? Because of AIDS. Swaziland now has the highest infection rate in the world - a shocking 40+ percent. Why that is, I'm not quite sure, but it probably has something to do with the size and location of this tiny country. Sandwiched between Mozambique and South Africa, Swazi is about a quarter the size of Tasmania, and is home to a million people. Travellers and truck drivers pass through on their way to the large cities of Maputo, Johannesburg, and Durban, and polygamy is legal. The King himself has a number of wives, and over 200 siblings. In a small population, that means that everyone is having sex ... read more

Swaziland was nothing like I expected. I had bought a brand new travel guide and read about Alpine peaks, cheese, chocolate, Heidi, and a national obsession with local hero Roger Federer. Nothing of the sort - the chocolate tastes of cardboard the cheese of plastic. Swaziland is a tiny, under-developed kingdom mostly surrounded by South Africa like a nut in a spanner, with Mozambique sharing a small border on the other side. It was held as a British colony long after we handed South Africa it's independence. It was then afforded its own independence in 1968 and is now one of the only absolute monarchist states in the world. In Swazi tradition the king rules alongside his mother. The current king being King Mswati III. The Swazi's openly idolise their King, even though it seems to ... read more

-“You are the reincarnations of Lord Varuna and Lord Vayu”, the priest at the Shri Sanathan Mundal Temple in Stanger, told us. We looked at each other in disbelief. -“Don’t you worry, you’re just not aware of it yet, but I’m 100% sure.” He said and smiled as we nodded hesitantly. -“Of course you must stay with us here at the temple tonight, together with the other Gods. I’ll first go and have my wife prepare us some chai.” He made no sign of joking and disappeared, skipping up the stairs to his domicile. Personally I hadn’t been the reincarnation of a God before, and neither had Aili. But since the priest was so convinced we decided it was easier to play along. He introduced us to the other Gods in the temple. Some were old ... read more

We'd left the hostel at Hluhluwe early in the afternoon, crossed the boarded into Swaziland and by nightfall arrived at the hostel - a few km off the 'main' road, down a bumpy unsealed track and seemingly in the middle of nowhere. The hostel I stayed at, Sondzela Backpackers, is within the Mlilwane wildlife reserve itself and turned out to be one of my favourites - located in a beautiful, tranquil setting everyone here was really friendly, and for a small additional cost you get a great meal each night (including a veggie option!!), cooked by the staff outside over an open fire!! I spent a great few evenings here sat round the bonfire, drinking beer, chatting to random people and generally chilling out - by day though there was lots of exploring to do. Unlike ... read more

Blog Update You may have been wondering why we haven't published any blogs for the last couple of weeks. Unfortunately, the Travel Blog website crashed and resulted in the loss of thousands of people's entries, including ours. We are trying to retrieve our old entries, without a huge amount of success, but in the meantime our priority is to get the new entries published so you can see what we've been upto. Hopefully we will be able to recover our old entries, but for the time being, you won't be able to see them on our blog. Journey to Swaziland Set off for Swaziland, which Paul (our friendly host at the backpackers) said would take around 3.5 hours on good roads. Yeah, maybe if you go the easy way!
