Driving into Swaziland in the late afternoon the scenery seemed rather forlorn. Dusty fields of brown stubble, sparce mud-brick homesteads and little sign of life. We drove through Manzini, the country's largest town, and were dropped off at the Legends backpacker hostel which we could see immediately was of the more basic variety. On the upside, our friend Dorian with whom we had spent much time at Eshowe and St. Lucia, was unexpectedly sitting on the sofa. Legends was a low grade backpackers in a prime location. We stayed there for a couple of days while we checked out that section of the Ezulwini Valley. Just down the road was the Swazi Cultural Village in which a guide explained the layout of the huts and Swazi customs. For example, when a man dies his oldest brother ... read more

Got up Friday with plans to interview a chief from Bogani's area and then go to Bulembu again and some of us would stay the night but we didn't know who yet. We got to Bogani's and his dad wasn't there yet. We ended up interviewin his dad and then went to the chief's krawl. It was very ceremonious: we all sat down on the ground and one Swazi guy introduced everybody and talked in Siswati and then Jim talked and there was some discussion and thanks and a prayer and we didn't go any further with the interview. We took some pictures and then went to Bulembu. In Bulembu we had lunch with David, an entrepreneuer who wants to revitalize Bulembu--an old mining town--into a tourist resort spot. He was quite the talker. Lunch ... read more

The day started slow. Around 10am we decided to split up the team and I got to go out with Deano, Miles, and Magugu to the rural area to the east and we filmed boys herding cattle. We did some portraits and shots of the boys with the cattle and I got a little sound, but nothing great. We kept driving and as luck would have it the first homestad we stopped at allowed us to shoot portraits of their family and around their home doing some chores. I took stills of the younger people and they loved looking at the camera and seeing their photos. It was a lot of fun and I am really glad that Jim had me with that group that day. We left the homestead, took some more portraits along ... read more

We interviewed Treasure, a girl had been abused multiple times, at the Mountain Inn first thing in the morning. I was not in the interview. She was with Ben and Janeen, a young American couple. From there we went to St Anne's school to talk with teachers about teacher-student abuse. I was not in the interviews. Mart, Tyler, Rob, and George were now with us. Next stop was SWAGAA--Swaziland Action Group Against Abuse. The interview there went well, I was again not in it. We drove as fast as we could to interview a Jericho sect prophet. We got there just at the end of the day, very nice but disappearing light. We went back to Mountain Inn for dinner, Jim and Mart had a meeting/dinner with the Minister of Health.... read more

Today we went to a clinic, a care point for orphans, and took our first trip to Bulembu. At the clinic, there were hundreds of people there to get care. A large percentage for HIV/AIDS I'm sure. Lots of people of all ages. We interviewed a nurse and a counselor. Both went well. Didn't see anything graphic, but a lot of sick people. One man asked for something, and I had nothing to give him, and he seemed so ashamed. Timbissini Care Point was our next stop. 50 kids come each day to get food and learn under a tree. Miles had a great time playing pied piper with the kids. They sat us down and cooked these huge yams and gave us each a bowl with 3 of them in it. I felt extremely ... read more

Really got moving on interviews. Met and shot Bogani--very intelligent and perceptive. Then lunch at Nando's and interviews at Tum George Hotel with Petros. Then 3 generations of AIDS victims. Talked to Lynne. She's okay with me being gone longer. ... read more

Up early and off for Swaziland. Deano drove first. The scenery is pretty at times, getting better as we head east. We count 6 to 7 power plants along the way. Drive goes smoothly, and I take over as we enter Swaziland. We get to the Mt. Inn and meet Magugu, Donna, Kevin, and Willard. Kevin's interview happens next, we have lots of sound issues but all goes well. Jim is very pleased. he decides that we will not go back to Joberg to shoot, but stay in Swaziland the whole time. The project is suddenly a lot about the AIDS situation in Swaziland, not all of Africa. Shortly later, Jim says he wants to stay an extra week and shoot everything for the longer form doc too. So, within 24 hours the whole project ... read more

Well, this is it, the end of our trip. We arrived back in the UK on Saturday morning to grey skys and drizzle. I cant remember right now where we last wrote from , so I'll work my way backwards and when you come to somewhere you recognise, you can stop reading! We spent the last week in Johannesburg staying with a friend. We hired a car for the week, making it so much easier and cheaper to get around. We went out to a couple of animal parks in the Gauteng region, and saw plenty of deer and antelope, and more lions and rhino. We also went to another cheetah research and breeding centre, this one better organised and funded than the one in Namibia. But we didnt get to play with the cheetah here! ... read more
