Well we had quite a trip from Maputo, Mozambique to Manzini, Swaziland in the Ewulini Valley. We rode in one of those mini busses I mentioned previously. The first row of the 5 has the driver and two money collectors. The next three rows have 2 fixed seats and one fold down seat (for 3 a total of 3 people in each of these rows) and the last row is a fixed seat. This last row would be great if it were for 3 people but for whatever reason it is supposed to hold 4 people and we were all crammed back there. Also the seat is quite high off of the ground so that my head was hitting the ceiling constantly as the roads are all potholes and the minibus has no shock absorbers to ... read more

Daddy decided to take the long way to Durban, through a country he had never been to.....Swaziland. Despite spending a total of over 4 months in South Africa on 2 previous trips, he had never been to both Swaziland and Lesotho, 2 small countries bordering or within South Africa, so he decided that we would go on this trip. We did not spend the night in Swaziland, but just spent most of the day driving through it. We stopped off at a place called Piggs Peak which had a great view of the valley below. We also stopped in the Ezulwini Valley to buy some crafts, earings for my mommy, and the highlight of my trip to Swaziland....Eating ribs. I had become a big fan of eating ribs, and when daddy read that there was a ... read more

Around 7am the next morning I was picked up out the front of the Durban Hostel by a couple in a van who delivered me to the backpacker centre in St Lucia - the trip was quite pleasant and St Lucia appeared to be a nice little holiday town with a fast food restaurant just down the street. I left my bag in the hostel and went and got some lunch before returning to use the internet while I waited for the bus. Around 3pm we were on our way - soon after crossing the Swazi border we caught a glimpse of giraffe through the trees so the driver stopped to allow us to take some photos. Late in the day the Baz Bus delivered me to a drop off point just a few kilometres from ... read more

After switching backpackers to one closer to the city center of Durbin via hitchhiking, using two Kombis (I finally figured out this is what they call the mini taxi's), and walking for a kilometer or two, we relocated to the Happy Hippo. Here I used the full day to do laundry, buy supplies, and catch up on emails and talking to people via skype. This backpackers had the cheapest internet I have found yet so I took advantage of it. The next morning we took off for the Amphitheater, which is located in the northern part of the Drakensberg. We took the Baz Bus one final time. The journey was about 4-5 hours. The Amphitheater was in a remote, flat, grassy area with the mountains in the background. The scenery around there kind of reminded me ... read more

Leaving Maputo I get to experience travel like an African lady. After I offer a little bit of my Coke to a thirsty looking young boy, around five years old, he decides that I am a preferable travel companion to his mother and insists on standing between my legs as we are about to leave. This can't be very comfortable so I pick him up and drop him on my lap and for the next four hours do what women do all day every day across Africa; travel with at least one child on top of them. I doubt I provide as much pillowy comfort, but he seems happy nevertheless. Of course back in England, should I offer some sugary drink to a small child then proceed to sit him on my lap for a number ... read more

Sure enough, 03h57 and the electric air pump started again, accompanied by the now expected Afrikaans expletives. I lay there, desperate to sleep, wanting to get a little more rest before getting up at 05h30. I must have gone back to sleep as Jerry came across to the tent to see if I was awake. Feigning alertness, I wished him a Good Afternoon and went off to have a cold wash. A few other hardy travellers were around, some drinking coffee, some drinking rooibos and others just beating the living daylights out of each other for having failed to mend the leaking air bed. Bags packed, tent folded, breakfast taken, dishes washed, camp demolished and it was time to pack the bus and leave the camp. Maxwell led us at speed through the Kruger, missing several ... read more

On the border of Mozambique lies a not-so-east-to-get-to-but-definitely-worth-the-bumps backpackers called Shewula Mountain Camp. We got to explore a nearby community on a village tour and meet some of the locals. The view was breath-taking. I wish my camera was working properly so that I could have taken un-blurred photos.... read more

Dev, Kel and myself decided to tackle the Usutu River in two-man rubber duckies - facing up to grade IV rapids. I think Kel had it easy as she got to accompany the guide and hence had to do very little actual paddling - although I'm sure Dev will state he did most of the work in our boat too... I'm positive the guy at the back is suppose to do most of the paddling... right?... read more
