Holy Cow! We made it! I know that there were some doubters our there who thought that we wouldn't last 4 months in Africa or survive the lack of running water in India, but we did it! In the last 18 months we have been in North and South America, Europe, Africa and Asia. Its a shame we couldn't make it to Oceania this time around, but its on the agenda for in the next few years. I still have to run a marathon on Europe and Oceania to complete my 7 continents marathoning goal so I think the Oceania will happen in the next few years or so. Now that we are back we are thinking of maybe going to Columbia over winter break and maybe Dublin for Saint Patricks Day, but all that is ... read more

Good Morning America! Laura and I have had a great week in the Western New York and Canada area. We started out the week at my high school friend Amy's wedding in Silver Lake. It was a weekend camping/outdoor wedding and probably one of the coolest weddings we have been to yet. Everything was low stress and wonderfully done. The bride and groom were married by the lake, there was a giant s'more cake, great food great company. I am sure they will have a wonderful marriage. Besides the wedding we have been putzing around my mom's house visiting various family friends, we mostly just relaxed and enjoyed having a house to roam around in. I watched tons of TV, caught up on internet-ing and phone-ing and registered for fall classes. CWU is on the quarter ... read more

With less than 2 weeks until we return to Washington DC, the place where our adventure began, we find ourselves again in Moscow ready to head to our large apple, aka New York City. We split our time between Kiev and Odessa. Our Ukrainian friend from DC Anna set us up with a home stay with her parents. We stayed in her old room even. The food they prepared was amazing. Everything maybe except the sala, which is the top layer of pig fat with spices. I tried a bite. Its like chewing gum with an aftertaste. I hope it won't remain in my stomach for 7 years. We also had nalishniki, a favorite. It is a bit like a crepe with some cheese inside. This cheese is hard to find in the US and I ... read more

Greetings from the Russian Federation! I am not sure if this blog should even 'count' but it is the second day in a row we have been in sovereign Russian territory. And we did get a stamp, eat a Russian meal, and get treated rudely... The story goes even further back than two days, however. We start in China. For about a week I tried calling 5 or so different Russian embassy numbers in China but no avail. Even when I got a person, they said to call back at a different time. So our efforts to get a transit visa in China were thwarted. Even the Russian embassy websites in China and America do not list the price or what is needed to get this "transit visa." In Mongolia after a week of holidays we ... read more

Hello again after just a week! Sadly our Mongolian adventure is coming to a close. Also sadly enough anyhow, with the new upgrades to this travel blog it looks like I can't upload pictures. For now, I've put a bunch on Facebook though. We came into Mongolia on the nicest distance train possible! In our 4 bed closed compartment we were the only people occupying it. The train had an excellent food car, nice tea/coffee ladies and even a shower. (I was wondering why they came around and gave us fresh towels). Our first day in Ulaanbaatar was Independence day or Naadam festival. The whole country shut down to wrestle, do archery, and horse racing. We went to the stadium and watched several wrestling bouts. Basically it is a bit like Sumo. 2 men come together, ... read more

After returning from North Korea everything seemed to move at lightning speed. A few weeks prior, towards the end of April, our school, , informed us that our teaching quality had decreased and therefore they were reducing our pay by about 1000 U.S. Dollars. There was nothing in our contract about this so we had no choice but to accept this unfortunate situation and hope for the best. By mid-May we were informed that again our salary would be reduced by about 1000 U.S. Dollars. It was at this point we started to make preparations to leave China. By June I was reduced to a paid-by-the-hour part time status and the situation as not tenable. During June Laura continued to work for Clever Kids on a full time basis. Actually June was the only month we ... read more

I have always been curious about the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea or commonly known as DPRK or “North” Korea. All DPRK maps show only “Korea” as if a border and a southern country didn’t exist and it was just one big happy country. A lot of what we hear and read about the DPRK is negative. In general when there are differing opinions, side A says one thing and side B says another thing. Often the truth lies somewhere in between. It is with an open mind I approached my 5 day trip to the DPRK. The first day we flew into an almost empty airport and were obliged to surrender our phones almost immediately. They were wrapped in cellophane and stored at the airport for us to collect on our way out. As far ... read more

Hello from China, Our spring and summer plans are progressing along quite nicely. We are happy to report that we now have a city we are moving to and a date when we need to be there. We need to be in Seattle, Washington by the 23rd of September as this is where Laura has chosen to do her PhD. I am applying to various actuarial and math programs in the area as well. All of the applications are due in early April so I am working hard to finish up the essays and get all of the paperwork in order. We have settled in quite nicely. In the end it looks like our schedules are finally pretty much decided. The final results seem to have Laura teaching 2 English classes and a Health class and ... read more

Well it has been a short while since I last posted. Mostly this is because nothing really significant has happened and we have been quite busy with our regular routines. This semester Laura and I are teaching everything from drama club to preschool to 9 year olds. On the days we do not teach, we still have to plan for the lessons and design and develop curriculum and such. My days off are Mondays and Fridays while Laura is off Tuesdays and Fridays. In addition to teaching, Laura continues to blog for the Association of Safe International Road Travel and to freelance write articles on travel, fashion, and lifestyle for the China Global Times. I have joined the Beijing Handball Club and practice every Thursday. The weekend tournaments are going to be hard for me to ... read more

What a difference a week makes! Or how about a month? Last month at this time we were celebrating the secular new year in Delhi, India. Now we are about to celebrate the year 4760 (or there about) in China. We now have a wonderful job teaching English and a splendid little apartment! After considering many offers we decided to go with Clever Kids on a Dramatic Adventure in English. First of all, the company really invests in its employees. Last month there was a company paid for spa weekend. This month we all went out for dinner and drinks and got a really nice New Year's gift hamper (thats British English for a gift basket). They actually pay us to come in during the week and prepare our lessons for the weekends. The downside is ... read more
