Tue 9 Aug Fly day lost So, firstly, can anyone explain to me why I used up all my USD that I got at about $1.10 when their credit rating dropped – that’s right, because if someone does bad with their money, you think it would be worth less right – wrong! Our Aussie dollar has dropped below parity. Anyway – just whatever I do with my investment money – don’t do it, or wait a week until the ass falls out of wherever I put my money and you’ll at least get it at a 20% discount. Nice sleep in today, woke just before alarm (which was 9.30am). Had time for physio and stretches which was good and needed. Then checked out and walked down a few blocks to train. Was only $3.75 each which ... read more
Hopefully the photos are in order - has taken me forever to upload because it was screwing everything up. Enjoy! Sat 23 July Blue Horizon Vancouver Woken 9am by knock on door to collect luggage, then alarm went off so not that annoying. Went down and said goodbye to rest of tour going on cruise. Fiona drew winner of bag which was Peta. Had brekkie which was Eggs Benedict Robson style with tomato and avocado. Then checked facebook and saw that Amy Winehouse had died but wasn’t sure whether it was a joke or not, then more about bombs and shootings in Oslo too which is really sad. Amy got in about 11.30am and had chat and catch up and went for walk about 12.45pm. Headed toward Stanley Park and ended up walking the 22km lap ... read more
Wed 13 July Queen Victoria Victoria Woke before 3.30am which turned to 2.30am mid flight. Did physio and then caught taxi with plenty of time at airport. Slept some of flight and met Simone, our tour director easy enough. Just had Tim Horton combo which doesn’t include coffee apparently even though the picture says?? Even staff didn’t know what was going on. Now have a couple of hours waiting for rest of group. Bus trip to ferry, slept some. Ferry was cool but didn’t see any whales. Then bus for an hour to hotel, slept most of the way I think. Did pickup that Vancouver is about 2.5 million people in the greater area. Learnt the names of coins, penny-1, nickel-5, dime-10, quarter-25, loonie-$1, toonie $2. Then room wasn’t ready so walked downtown and got Chinese ... read more
Sat 9 July Formulae 1, Brisbane Up sparrow fart to go to airport. Dozed most of the way to Brisbane and was 8 degrees. Got my luggage, but Joanne and about 20 others did not have luggage. It came about ½ hour later. Then had few hours until checkin, went for drive and to stopped at shopping centre. Sushi here is only $2.20 per roll, ate one and bought another 5 to take home. Now no fridge, but cold enough to keep food good I reckon. Hopeless internet service so close to airport. Worst night sleep. Sun 10 July Days Inn Calgary South, Calgary Up super early and only 4 degree on way to airport for quick checkin and 3 hour wait. 9.5 hour flight was longest of my life with some super turbulence that was ... read more
Well Iceland is classed as Europe on this site... Monday, 6 September 2010 Reykjavik City Hostel, Iceland Slept awesome until 10am and then dozed till about 11am and feel much better. Bit gloomy outside so repacked port with stuff I don’t think I need and tried to wash some clothes. Saw in book that Iceland has the best drinking water in the world. Cold water that is! The hot water is sulphuric so smells and tastes bad. That is ok, I can live with that, until I got in the shower. It is between 10 and 14 degrees, but we must be acclimatized a bit because don’t even have the heater on, in any case though, it is not cold shower weather. It is a catch 22. For me to have a cold shower, I would ... read more
Sorry about so many photos, but hey, they are probably much better than my ramblings anyway...... Monday, 23 August 2010 Spitsbergen Guesthouse, Svalbard Woke ok at 4.30am and even got a bit of leftover bread brekky and was about to have cereal but taxi was early. Got to lift before I realized my wallet and money belt was still under the pillow! Lucky. Was bit over ½ hour to the airport and a long way so worth the $30 odd each we paid I suppose. Joanne tried to check me in online last night and it didn’t work, and when I tried to checkin it didn’t either, the lady had to do it. Then got to leave my luggage 4 hours early which was great - hopefully it won’t go walkabout in the meantime. Then we ... read more
Joining a Cosmos tour called Jewels of the Baltics and Scandinavia for a couple of weeks seemed a good way to get to see these countries in an easy way.... Thursday, 5 August 2010 Copenhagen, Quality Dan Kastrup, Denmark Woke at 4am and was up for about an hour. Then slept again until 9am. Had brekky which I am sure I mentioned is awesome and a slow pack. Got downstairs early which was lucky because transfer was 20min early. Busy traffic drive to airport and got there about 3 hours early. Can’t check in until 2 hours so went and were lucky to get a seat and then had to queue about 10-15m for check-in, which took nearly an hour! Then we had to do passport which was a half hour at least, lucky we were ... read more
Monday, 2 August 2010 Moscow, Budapest Hotel, Russia Slept ok until 4.30am when I woke up sweating. Went to toilet and moved fan back somewhat in my direction and managed to sleep again until 8ish. Quick breakky, pack and now just doing last of net again before transfer in about an hour. Moved outside and chatted to girls who had just been to Moscow and it is in a heatwave from wildfires…. Just what I need after not sleeping well last few days. Oh well, I’m in a hotel, at least it should have aircon. Our transfer was exciting with arguments about who has right of way in a two way street that fits one car, we won so the other guy had to reverse a 100m or so back a skinny walled street. Then a ... read more
Hopefully all my blog dates line up???? Saturday, 24 July 2010 Classic Rhapsody, Eastern Trekker, Sarajevo Heard a couple of the guys come home, and then woke up before alarm as well so got on net for a bit, just a quick status update and then gone. Now sitting on corner of pickup point in Split, coughing my guts up (if I was game to look it would be fluorescent green or yellow I’m sure). Wow, I am now 2 days behind in diary and heaps of info to catch up on… Said goodbye to Laura that morning and met Angelo our new driver, and I had to have a little giggle when our bus has the rainbow on it, when our last tour became the rainbow tour. Did the intro thing again on the bus ... read more
The Bohemian Rhapsody - Eastern Trekker Thursday, 15 July 2010 Plus Prague, Prague Woke just after 6am again but got up about 6.30am so that I could call home and get some internet done before leaving for flight. Called and got to chat to mum and dad. Brad was there but asleep and he doesn’t talk too much on the phone anyway. Had a nice brekky and chat again to thank guy for putting me onto Moscatel, he was shocked when I had the whole bottle and said lucky I didn’t have a second one! Wandered down and caught bus to airport which was E3.50 instead of rip off cab. Checked in and customs wasn’t even really a check. At gate, went to toilet and little lady was cleaning but worst toilet I’ve been to in ... read more
