The guy at the reception told me that there is a tour for 2 nights 3 days where they did the two gorges near Tenehir and the Marzhouga desert which was costing Dhm1050 or Dhm850 without a camel ride. The French couple was doing it and they required a 3rd person. Even though I heard from the French couple yesterday that they had met travellers who said it was good I felt the price was a little steep and could not spend 3 days on a tour. Instead I thought I will do it on my own. Woke up early as I had to catch the bus to Tenehir took a taxi to the bus station and bought a ticket to Tenehir, while in the bus I decided I can't be bothered walking through the gorges ... read more

I woke up around 7am, the streets were quiet and empty. I went upstairs towards the terrace where the hotel served breakfast, looking at what they offered and how much it cost I decided not to have it. Bread, jam and coffee for Dhm20 not even an omlette, no way. I walked towards the Taourirt Kasbah, went inside for Dhm10 and checked it out. I met this french couple at the Kasbah who told me about Al-Mansour ed-Dahabi dam. I had breakfast off the street nearby, Harira and Omlette is becoming my regular diet now that I have stopped eating fish. It was about a 3km walk and I did not see any dam although I did see something that resemmbled a lake. However while getting there I passed a village with children playing football and ... read more

I, woke up around 815am did the three S's had breakfast and called Aziz's friend in Marak, Hussain and he said he will meet me in 1.5hrs. I went to email and burn a dvd in the meantime. Its 3 days being in Morocco and I have already taken over 900 pics. I hope 300 a day won’t be my average. I first went to a Kodak shop and the guy tried to rip me off. He said that he doesn’t have ... read more

Woke up at 930am after the late night out and went back to the hotel. Wanted to go to the Portugese fort but it was shut. Instead climbed a few building to get good panoramic views of the city. The best view of Essaouira is from the terrace of Majestic hotel which I came across quite by chance. The only building taller than this is the mosque and obviously you can’t et there. Only the loudspeakers are fixed there. I called one of the friends I met yesterday Aziz as promised and we were going to meet at 1pm. I work on Sri Lanka time hehehe so I met him at 115pm, actually that is a vast improvement on Sri Lankan time. He came with a friend of his Youssef who is a french teacher in ... read more

We have to drive up and through the Atlas mountains to make it to Marrakech, it was rainy and cold though we should not be complaining as it was our first rain it is bloody tiring and annoying to set up and put away tents ahen it is soaking wet. Wr got to the Marrakech camp site 15 kms from the city, lots of peacocks in the camp and wakes you up very early in the morning with their honking sound which Cam can imitate to perfection. Wr all hired a taxi to get to the city is is bustling and full of energy Chrissy and I broke away from the group and tried the seafood, it was excellent! We also had henna tattoos, she on her feet and me on the back of my head. ... read more

Woke up around 830am had the hotel breakfast which is included in the price of the dorm...they served bread, omlette, creps, yogurt, orange juice and coffee. Afterwards I put my backpack into a locker room and left to Essaouira which took approx 3.5hrs. The guy at the bus station said its Dhm45 and then i said the guidebook says 35 then he said thats without luggage and i said i dont have luggage hence I paid 35. In Moroccon buses you pay for your ticket and if you have luggage you got to pay separately to the guy who puts the luggage into the bus. Normally he would ask for Dhm10 but then you got be firm and say I normally pay Dhm5. He would complain and start haggling but then you got to stick to ... read more

Today marks another of the sad partings of our Fassi household: Anna, Mohammed and Elias are on a train to Casablanca, where they will catch a series of flights that will deposit them in Baltimore, Maryland. It's an exciting change: for the first time since Elias was born two years ago, he will get to live with both his father and mother in the place that he calls home most of the time. But of course it's also mildly heartbreaking to think of Anna (leaving her djellabah behind), Elias (without Tahara to feed him or Omar to play with) and especially Mohammed (moving permanently to the US on his first trip out of Morocco) displaced from the Fassi extended family that has held them (and us) for the last four months. To mark their departure Nazua ... read more

Ryan air flight got to Marrakech at 930am. I met Daniel an American doing a Ph.D. at LSE in London at the Luton airport. We took a bus from the airport to the medina. The return ticket cost me Dhm30 valid for 2 weeks while a single was Dhm20. The bus ride took about 15mins. I had booked a hostel from hostelworld but that was very poorly rated. The only reason I booked it was so that I had an accomodation confirmation to show the Moroccan embassy in London. This was the cheapest hostel on the web for Marakesh. Daniel said his friends had recommended hotel Ali close to the Djemaa el-Fna square and we checked it out. Dhm60 for a dormitory you can’t quite go wrong, the people at the hotel were extremely friendly Hind ... read more

We are in Rabat but camping in the next town across the river called Sale, it is next to the river front and you can smell the delicious fish being cooked from the various food stalls, we took a walk for a bit around the ocean front and it was full of rubbish and next to slum looking area, some people are fishing as well. The people are very nice and greet us politely as we walk along, Mark almost got bitten by a dog but didnnt so that was good. We are staying here mainly to apply for visas to Mauritania and Mali, we stayed for three nights , we cant really go around town until after noon to make sure we are around if problems with visas arise. We drove as far as we ... read more

Just to make you all feel better about not being away from blighty, it is raining here in Marrakesh. I had a great time on Monday, climbing up at Todra gorge, then struggling down again afterwards... it was rather treacherous as we had no climbing ropes or anything but were making our way down vertical parts... all rather good fun once we had got back down - pretty damn scary at the time. One of the guys ended up stqying there the night as he couldnt get down in the day. I am really enjoying the camping, though cooking for 20 people means a lot of washing up!!! - we have cook groups so only have to do it once a week. We only have a few more days in Morrocco before heading South through Western ... read more
