Back Again... This time just a quick note.. The last week i have been spending my mornings at the local nursery school with the tiny tots whom are adoreable. The first days i was there i would make at least one of the kids cry when they saw me.. ow :( but thankfully their getting used to the Mzungu. The poor teachers have no supplies including sugar which is the main drawcard to get the kids to school as they give them tea, but lately have not been able to. From the picture you can see their toy cupboard consists of a mere couple of pieces of lego so we struggle to keep them entertained. I've chipped in as much as possible but if anyone has any old toys, clothing etc that they no longer ... read more

Sunday 6th I wandered down to the lake at 8.30 as I had arrived in the dark the night before. I just happened to come down to the lake next to Cecelia’s house where she was washing in the lake. We went to look at the self-catering quieter Anglican chapel that they thought I could stay in. However I asked to stay at Cecelia’s as I didn’t want to be by myself. They thought I wouldn’t want to be at Cecelia’s as there is no electricity or water and it means bathing in the lake and a long drop squat toilet. We sat outside in her garden overlooking the lake and then went into the ‘town’ to the Hunger Clinic for lunch. We eat with a traveler who was wearing far too much sun cream ... read more

Friday 4th Steve, Leen and I set of at 8.30 in the hostel taxi to the market as this and the auction house are the 2 things to see in Lilongwe we though we better visit it before leaving. We left our bags in the car and entered a walled market where we were met by a maze of streets selling fruit, veg, fish, plastic bags, soap, clothes, nails, screws, timber, anything you could need there would probably be someone selling it (except ice cream!!!). I bought some peas, peanuts and doughnuts. Then the taxi driver helped us find the correct bus and we loaded our big bags under the seats and sat down waiting for the minibus to fill up. We wouldn’t leave until there are 4 people on each row- there is not ... read more

Sorry so much in one go. This is the first internet I’ve had in a month and for that reason I am going to let dad be solely in charge of the blog so he can do it when he gets back home. Sun 29th It was 11pm by the time I’d left Paul going through security and I went outside to phone the airport backpackers for my free pickup. I’d clearly woken her up and there was some confusion over where I was supposed to meet the pick up. Eventually I had to walk to the domestic flights area at the other end of the airport where there was a taxi waiting for me. When I arrived she told me I had to pay for the transfer as it was after hours- why she ... read more

Often the most precious moments in life are not those that cost a lot of money to see, or are surrounded by hype but rather the simple things are those that really take your breathe away. I've played pool with a Masaii, drunk beer with corrupt police, been within meters of a wild lion, seen the largest mountain in Africa and sun bathed on the golden sands of Zanzibar... and although its been a journey of a lifetime none of these experiences would make it to my top ten moments in Africa. Why? Because i've learnt that it's the small, unique moments that really make you stop and think.. wow life is bloody awesome! One afternoon after a marathon beach soccer game as I was retiring to my chalet, i was stopped by one of ... read more

I’m in love…. again. Yes, I know I’m prone to this affliction, at least as regards the places I visit, but it was love at first sight with Malawi. Even the mayhem at Blantyre airport when I arrived didn’t bother me: the warmth of the people waving and smiling from the balcony above the immigration/baggage collection area (I’d hesitate to call it the “arrivals hall”) at arriving friends and relations countered any possible frustration at the ad hoc immigration and baggage retrieval procedures. There was a long queue, reaching back nearly to the foot of the steps from the ‘plane, for the “immigration counter”, a couple of desks set up on an apparently temporary basis in a dark corridor to deal with arriving foreigners (Blantyre clearly does not get many international flights each da... read more

Malawi! What we saw of this country we really liked! We'd consistently been told that Malawi was one of the poorest countries in Africa, but the scenery is spectacular, the people are very friendly and most of the homes we passed were made of brick rather than mud and straw of previous countries! Our first stop was for snacks (and bug spray!) in Lilongwe while our truck had it's alternator fixed. Truck was really late back to us and so we ended up getting to our first camp in Malawi - Chinthehe - really late and after dark. It was the only time we ended up driving after dark on the whole tour, and we ended up putting cheesy as songs on the ipods and singing them at full bore as we drove the last ... read more

Malawi wasn't on our initial plans, not that we have any, but we first thought on crossing from Mozambique straight to Tanzania. As we had done a detour to Zambia to sell the crasymobile, why not visit another well recommended country (we are getting expert on that, Uganda, Rwanda, Congo and now Malawi). Malawi has the nickname "The warm heart of Africa". Well given, because we found that people are indeed very welcoming (Exception to the police officer in the border control that had to be bribed to do not more than the job he was supposed to do in the first place). But the beer "Kuche Kuche Mowa Watu Watu"…hehehe… was cheap enough to compensate (33 cents of dollar for 500ml). Our trip to Malawi started in the capital, Lilongwe. We arrived there at 3:00 ... read more

Access to internet over the past couple of months has been sporadic as you have probably noticed. We got back to Nkhata Bay on Thursday night after travelling down from Arusha the previous Sunday (the train from Dar to Mbeya is VERY slow) We leave here on Friday and finally head back to the UK on Saturday - where have those 6 months gone ? I have lots of blogging to do. . . like our train journey from Mombasa to Nairobi; Our mad rush through the Rift Valley trying to take in as many lakes as possible (Naivasha, Nakuru and Bogoria); our climb out of the valley through Nyahururu to Nanyuki. And then there's teh safari from Arusha. . . but that's all for later. We'll be home on Sunday and leaving behind soem good ... read more

Up at 4am, which was about 3 hours after we stopped drinking. Needless to say, the truck was quiet today and in fact the 10 hour drive went remarkably quickly as we slept through most of it. We crossed into Tanzania in the morning, paying $50 each for our visas. The campsite we stopped at today was great, for one thing it was up in the mountains and so was quite cold and gave us the rare treat of using our sleeping bags. The showers were almost too hot, which was great and which made the shampoo actually work like it should do, so we (well, the girls plus 'doublewash' Andrew) all had silky soft, fluffy hair - oh little things. And lighting in the shower was by kerosene lamp. Security was provided by some spear-carrying ... read more
