I guess the easiest thing to do is to just type out my excerpts from my handwritten journal here. It looks like I'll be able to get to the internet cafe at least once a week, maybe more, but that means you guys will be getting big chunks of news all at once. I'll try to include headings so you can keep up. Here goes... New Orleans-Washington: No huge deal. Managed to photograph my own bag being loaded onto the plane from the terminal. Also saw a child on a leash in the airport... those were some really hardcore grandparents. During the flight I watched "300" over the shoulder of the 70-something man in front of me who was using his video i-pod. Really impressed with his technological proficiency. Somebody check on United Airlines' flight route ... read more

This past week was my last working week this summer which is totally nuts! On Tuesday I gave a 3-hour (!) workshop to the camp's teachers on children's rights. There were about thirty of them, some Malawian and some refugees. I studied children's rights last fall but we focused entirely on U.S. law so I had to spend some time last weekend reviewing the international law! It went really well and it was as educational for me as for them, I think. The teachers really payed attention in the beginning (the boring part) and then when we broke into groups to start looking at real-life situations they all found very creative ways of appl... read more

I have attached a video of the reaction I get when I try to speak that language with people in the camp. My friend swears they laugh because they are shocked to hear a mzungu speak it, but I am quite sure it's because I am saying it wrong! It’s been a while since I had internet because I pretty much spent all of the last week in the camp. I started my interviews so I went every day through Saturday to get them done. Thursday and Saturday involved using public transportation to get their since our vehicle doesn’t go out on those days, which is quite an adventure. First you take a minibus to the bus depot downtown, which is ... read more

The Candyman is this wonderful, old Malawian man. He comes into Mayoka every night. He sets up his chair and little bench with chocolate and candy and snacks which he then sells to the people hanging out in the bar. What makes this man such an icon to me is not that he sells candy but his look. The picture I took of him was in his “Sunday go to church clothes” (my line). But the first few days he was dressed all in purple, purple socks, purple shorts, purple shirt. Best of all is the hat. He has this purple, pimp daddy hat. It really gives him a pimp/fly guy look or maybe the crows Heckle and Jeckle. We couldn’t tell. It was a classic look. My trip through Malawi was short and relaxing. I ... read more

While in Lilongwe, I stay at the Sunbird Lilongwe Hotel. Don't be fooled, it is not the Le Meridian as advertised on Expedia. They pulled out some time ago when Malawi nationalized hotel chains and called them Sunbird or something like that. It's not really clear to me what exactly happened… In any case, following my horrible cab ride, I now have a driver arranged through Africare or the hotel. So the manager of the hotel and I have become friends, as I believe it is some relative of his that chauffeurs me around. When he sees me, the manager, he asks if I need transportation for the day. Then we go into his office and he makes a call. All I know is I have the guy's number saved in my phone under "Driver, Mr.". ... read more

Welcome to the Twilight Zone We travelled along the length of the lake, catching glimpses of the shimmering water between the hills, down to the southern tip. On route we stopped by a copse of rubber trees. You score the bark of the tree and it oozes a rubbery sap (that looks a bit like snot) which they collect and process to create all manner of rubber things! We arrived at Wheelhouse Marina, we seemed completely deserted. Apparently there was a cichlid farm nextdoor which provides aquariums worldwide with the pretty little fishies. We stepped through a gap in the wall and it was like the Twilight Zone! This zombie woman guided us around all the fish tanks, randomly feeding the fish. We were a bit thirsty and asked where we could buy some water. ... read more

Well as if the hassle with the immigration lady wasn’t enough I am now getting trouble from the government! I went to seek their cooperation in communicating to refugees who haven’t filed their claims yet that I would be available to help them, and was told that a refugee’s story is a secret between the refugee and the government. I was pretty baffled and told the official that I would think it would be up to the individual person to decide whether or not to share her story with me and ask for my help. So then he brought down the iron fist and said that the government would not allow me to counsel refugees without permission from above (which I am unlikely to get, let alone in sufficient time for me to do something ... read more

Lake Malawi Drove from our overnight stop in Iringa to Lake Malawi, passing through Mbeya and Mikumi National Park. Unfortunately Rach developed the super squits in the afternoon, which isn't pleasant when you're on a truck for hours. Driving through the mountains, Lake Malawi emerged as a huge, sparkling blue expanse of water. We arrived at a beachside campsite at the northern tip of the lake for an overnight stop. Went for a walk along the beach and got accosted by a bunch of endearing little boys who were playing football. They were proper little businessmen, befriending you so you'll buy their postcards or bracelets. Kandi Beach No chance to lie in thanks to a persistent cockerel crowing at 5am. We could have cheerfully wrung its neck! With Rach pumped full of imodium, we journeyed ... read more

So, I decided to get out of Lilongwe and head to Lake Malawi over the weekend, because not much is shaking in Lilongwe. Blantyre is really where the action is. So first I needed to go to the bank to see if I could get out some money (after the whole debit card debacle). So, two hours later I have my cash, but I'm exhausted. I freaked myself out, like what if I can't get out any money, what am I going to do (of course I would have figured something out, but I was too busy working myself into a frenzy). Gender lines here are very clearly drawn. There were only a handful of women in the bank, only men. And when I left my hotel in Lilongwe for the lake, the bellhop asked where ... read more

Arriving in Malawi was the scariest thing of my life. And I mean terrifying. The cab driver kept stopping on the side of the road next to groups of 20-something men. I finally told him that my colleague was waiting for me at the hotel and if I wasn't there in 5 minutes, he'd call the police. And then I took out my totally useless cell phone because I didn't have a Malawi SIM card yet and put it on my lap like I was poised to call the police. Not that I had a clue what the number was anyway… But that's beside the point. I get to the hotel and they tell me it's too dangerous to go out. It's 3pm in the afternoon at this point. I'm like, what the heck have I ... read more
