DJ Yoda: ‘Lake of Stars was without doubt one of the most memorable shows I’ve ever played. I’d thoroughly recommend it to anyone up for an adventure and a laugh.’ The Lake of Stars Festival was brought to life by Will Jameson, one of the founder members of Liverpool club night Chibuku. Will discovered the beautiful country of Malawi whilst volunteering in his gap year and knew instantaneously that when he next returned, it would be for a reason; and so the Lake Of Stars festival was born. The event, which has now become an annual occurrence, aims to raise the profile of what is a beautiful but poor country. The people of Malawi truly are the biggest asset; with the country being described as “The warm heart of Africa”, and this is evident in the ... read more

OK sorry for another massive delay of getting this updated but determined to finally get at least the Africa portion of our adventures finished. If you can't remember where we were up to then you'll have to go back to the previous Blog, but we had arrived at Lake Malawi for a couple of days rest after the trip down from Tanzania. We had two stops in Malawi centred around the wonderful Lake Malawi which is one of the worlds largest fresh water lakes and is just like a tropical paradise. First up we were in Chitimba Beach for a couple of nights staying in nice little lake front cottages - very relaxing and with great views over the lake. Second stop was the small lakeside village of Nkata Bay a few hours drive south taking ... read more

After a week in Arusha, (while the family went on Safari and we caught up with friends), the trip proper was about to start. We were planning to fly to Dar es Salaam (to save 10 hours on a bus) and then catch the train to Malawi and make our way overland down through Malawi then Zambia and ending up in Victoria Falls. Of course plans sometimes need to change!!! The train from Dar es Salaam in Tanzania travels some 1800kms over 3 days all the way into Zambia but we were only going to go to the Malawi border (about 840kms) - but that was still going to be 24 hours. We decided to travel First Class, which meant that we had a cabin to ourselves, and that we could order dinner and breakfast from ... read more

Arriving Lilongwe Airport on saturday 12:45pm from jo'burg I longed to check in into a beautiful inexpensive, modest hotel. Yes! the guys did it I landed myself at Annies Lodge in Area 47 after a 30 km motor drive. The Green greeted me and no regrets, but wondered how I would spend the next day before heading for the popular Lake Malawi especially the Cape Maclear beaches which I had read a number of interesting stories. I longed to be there and not in town. During the night meal I met a middle aged young girl who introduced herself simply as Mercy working for Bon Voyage Tours Ltd an Airline Travel Agent. Mercy told me not to spend a boring day as she connected me to a simple day tour company that would take me to ... read more

Apart from the common sitings of butt naked tourists lying on the golden beaches or sitting on the large rocks in the fresh water lake, smoking hemp and eating spice cakes while braiing fresh fish and meat on the shores, Malawi has got an interesting and rich cultural heritage that's just longing to be explored. I went to Dedza in the central region of Malawi where i was flabagusted at the Rock paintings made the 'Bantu' people (Midgits). Their paintings do speak for themselves. They are mainly about witchcraft beliefs and sex education taught in camps in caves on top of mountains. For such very short people they could draw very massive drawings on extremely large rock surfaces that are several times their height. How did they do it, i asked..and what did they use to ... read more

Hi! Had a few fantastic days in Malawi. We've been camping right on the edge of Lake Malawi at Kande Beach. Have been waking up early each morning (think someone's been playing around with my body clock because i never wake up early without an alarm!) Has been great wakingup though to the calm and stillness of the lake and sitting on the beach in my PJs reading my book and watching the day begin! There was a small island a little way off the shore and a group of us swam out there - it was good fun although a bit challenging as the waves get big on the lake as the day progresses. gave us something to do though and a bit of exercise never hurt anyone! Apart from that, i've been pretty lazy ... read more

Ok, just got to the computer after a week of being out and about only to find out that travelblog.org had a systems crash and lost a ton of entries from a bunch of different users. Apparently I'm one of the unlucky ones. I'll write more about the past week at a later date. I'm going to use this time to try to figure out how to recover what was lost and catch up on e-mails. All in all, everything is fine over here. Hope everyone is well. E-mail me.... read more

First off, I finally gathered my thoughts on my market experience. I suppose I should set the scene first. The market is a sprawling collection of wooden stalls of various sizes that probably takes up a square mile in the center of town. It is roughly divided between about a quarter of the total area specializing in fresh produce and the other 3/4 selling dry goods. A river is the boundary between the two sections, and a few groups of guys make their money by charging a 10 kwacha (140 kwacha: 1 USD) toll to cross on their homemade bridges. Customers seem to choose their bridge by finding the safety:convenience ratio most suitable to them. Fortunately, when we got ready to cross we were by one that looked pretty safe and didn't have to walk very ... read more

We left Livingstone a day earlier than expected to give ourselves more time later on the tour. Our first day after Livingstone involved a fair bit of driving to Lusaka, the capital of Zambia. We didn't spend much time in town as it was getting late so we went on to the campsite which seemed to be breeding very small dogs, which followed us around the campsite. Our next day was a full day of driving, arriving at Chipata in the evening. We only made one stop at a few market stalls where we spoke to a man who claimed Peter Crouch had been through yesterday! The following day we headed across the border from Zambia into Malawi, a small country stretching up lake Malawi. We ploughed on to the campsite which was situated on the ... read more

Hi from Malawi!!! Well since we last updated the blog we have been fortunate enough to be spending a lot of time at the beach! Nice!!! Previously I mentioned we were on Zanzibar island - what a crazy 3 days that was. As you can imagine we were over the moon at spending three nights in beach bungalows - it was like real life civilation with an ensuite including shower and everything! (the water was cold but we have definitely mastered the limb by limb washing process required for all cold showers). A highlight on Zanzibar was the team booze cruise on the second night. We were picked up from the shore on this mmm boat type thing (called a Dhow or Dow or something) that had a sail and half a second level and spent ... read more
