We woke up early this morning to sail to the town of Ferris to transfer from our Felucca to our van that will take us to Luxor. We traveled along a desert highway past small poor villages and people going about there daily life. There were people farming, childern playing, and people traveling to their jobs. We drove to the Temple of Edfu which was filled to the brim with tourists. There were bus loads of people going thru the temple. This temple still had its roof and the temple was just hugh. At this point in my trip all the temples have been amazing but now they are starting to look similar but how can you not enjoy them. After the Temple we joined the police convoy of three vehicles to Luxor. Our driver depending ... read more

We set off for another day sailing on the Nile. Most of the day there was no wind so we just drifted with the Nile's current. We have two stops along the way today and the first was the Town of Darrow. Usually there is a big Camel market there but there were no camels today so we when over to the local livestock market. There were all sorts of water buffalo, goats, doneys, horses, chickens, a few camels, and cows for sale. You had to be careful not get run over by all the pickup trucks in the market. We saw a man testing a doney by galloping it thru the market. Afterwards we went over to the local market area. It was crowded with people and tables with all sorts of things for everyday ... read more

We joined the Felucca boat at 10:30 am in Aswan. The Felucca was captained by Eub and his first mate and cook named Mohammed. The great thing about the Felucca is that you have nothing to do but relax. The crew takes care of all the sailing jobs and the cook prepares your meals. All you have to do to lounge around on the mat under an awning to protect you from the sun while watching the Nile, Date Palms, and Mango trees go by. The first night we stopped on a little island that was home to water buffalo that is that is looked after by there care takers who live in the village nearby. The Felucca is like a step back in time where everything is simple and you can relax. ... read more

I awoke at 3:00am to get ready and be picked up by the driver of our mini bus that was going to take us to Abu Simbel. In order for tourists to go to Abu Simbel you have to travel in a police convoy. Now the idea of Convoy is lost by the Egyptians because as soon as the convoy starts all the buses, vans, and cars try to race to the front. Its a mad dash down the highway in the desert that takes you to Abu Simbel. So after a 2 1/2 hour drive our bus made it to Abu Simbel. Now before the Aswan High Dam was built Abu Simble was located lower down the mountain but UNESCO saved the temple from being flooded and moved to the temple to higher ground and ... read more

I spent a semi restless night on the overnight train from Cairo to Aswan. The train was 2 hours late because between Luxor and Aswan some thieves had stolen the communication cables for the train to communicate with the stations. So with no communication the train went down the track very slowly and stopped frequently. After arriving in Aswan I was greeted with a spectacular view of the Nile. The water is semi blue with Feluccas (Sail Boats) sailing down the nile and date palms all along the shore. After taking a nap our group headed to a boat to be taken across the Nile to a small village. We were shown the home of the boat driver and watched a video of his cousins marriage. Later we taken to the desert where we mounted our ... read more

After a 10 hour train ride (during the day with air-conditioning working only sometimes) we arrived to the train station with literally 20 men wanting us to go to their hostel, and as we were the only tourists on the train they all came over to us. We had already decided on a place so that made it a bit easier but the problem was that we had no idea how to get to the place so had these men following us pointing out their hostels saying that theirs were so much better etc. We finally found it and were so happy to be in air-conditioning again. The owner had told us that the rooms were LE35 a night but we managed to get him down to LE10 and had breakfast thrown in. Nicely done I ... read more

(Kev) We only had a week to cover all of Egypt. So that meant fun nights of all night travel on trains and busses, I think in all the week in Egypt is the least amount of sleep I have ever gotten in a seven day span. The lack of sleep was worth it though because the days were fully action packed. Following the Nile, we got right to exploring temples. We saw four in all, Karnak, Luxor, Kom Ombo, and Edfu. They were everything I hoped for...and expected actually. It was just like the movies, huge statues, and pillars, and all sorts of Egyptian writing and inscriptions on the wall. The one thing we didn't get to do, that I had hoped to see was the valley of the kings...but that will be for next ... read more

or is that in the Nile? Yea.. thats it.. Just FYI, a lot of people have asked about pictures, and I already have almost 200 of them, but i haven't found a place that will download them for me.. Day 7: Monday, May 29: We got to sleep in, which was fantastic.. After breakfast we headed down to our felucca, our transportation and accomodation for the next 2 days. It was incredible just to relax and enjoy floating down the Nile. It is interesting because even though we were travelling downstream, we were sailing against the wind, so you have to zigzag across the river. I didn't realize how clean the river is, it is amazing, part of this is because there is not much civizilaztion or industry upstream. We took a swim at our lunch ... read more

Day 5: Cairo to Aswan Let's see.. Last you heard from me, I was in a cafe with hooka smokers and domino players, right outside the fruit market.. That night, we took a 14 hour train ride from Cairo to Aswan.. Definately not a sleeper car, we were in decent seats, but they kept the light on all the time. Leaving at 10pm, we arrived right at noon.. Checked into our hideaway next to the Nile. After a few hours rest, we headed over to Elaphantine Island and relaxed at a traditional Nubian home. We then went off for a nice camel ride across the sanddunes and ended up at another Nubian house with a fabulous meal. Nice relaxing day along the Nile, all the village children came and danced for us, then with us. We ... read more

Just spent 4 days on a beautiful old cruise ship wandering down the Nile. Not too many people...some a bit old but a few like minded souls. The weather a constant 38 so we spent a bit of time in the pool. Now we are on an island in a beautiful huge 5 star hotel.. very grand. We are visiting a Nubian village this afternoon. Was Othello a Nubian??? All is going well and we are looking forward to our next adventure in the Greek Island. Hope you are all well and not too cold. Love Heather hi Sue and all, Sorry but the blog wasn'tworking too well in paris, I'll get some postcards in Greece though.
