I'll need a train ride to catch up on these blogs, haha. I figured I'd keep the pictures coming though. Here are some pictures from our day in Luxor. Karnak temple is the largest ancient temple in the world. The magnitude is incredible. The Luxor temple, though it is much smaller, is equally as cool because the condition of the statues are so much better. Also, you're able to see the Roman influence and the temple walls where Roman paintings were chipped away to find the ancient Egyptian carvings underneath. One of the coolest things of today was a group of Egyptian women traveling from Alexandria stopping to thank us for traveling to Egypt. A man at the temple translated for us, because Michael and I did not understand, but the women wanted a picture with ... read more

And on to Luxor...which I ımmedıately prefer over Aswan and Cairo. I think because it's a raw poor area once your off the main streets and for some reason I like places like that. Today's dose of sight-seeing was Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Workers. Valley of the Kings is my favourite "ancient site" so far. All are obviously amazing to see, but the tombs here are very colourful and there's lots of them. I feel sorry for all these Pharohs though - all that effort that went ınto building theır tombs and now they're dug up and shipped out to museums with all theır treasure on dısplay for tourısts to look at! My head is full of Egyptian gods and kings and I'm wondering which Pharoh was the one who put Joseph ... read more

Hello all!! Finally relaxing in a roasting hot Luxor after a busy few days. On Wednesday we were up at the painful hour of 3am to get the bus to Abu Simbel from Aswan. We had to drive to the nearest police station and wait for more buses to join us on a security convoy- the first time we have seen the police do anything here!! Abu Simbel was impressive and the story of how the temples were rescued and moved from the rising waters of the Nile (following the construction of Aswan Dam) by UNESCO was even more impressive. We had about two hours there before being loaded back on the bus for a three hour drive to Philae Temple. It was built in honour of the Goddess Isis, and was actually a lot more ... read more

The mighty Nile River is the longest in the world, originating in Uganda and flowing through several African countries, before it meanders through Egypt to the mediterranean sea. The annual Nile floods have sustained Egyptian civilisation for thousands of years, and the black sediment left after the floods has provided fertile soil for the people of Egypt in this desert country. A visit to Egypt isn't complete without a cruise on the Nile to visit the magnificent temples, and it's been a dream of mine for some period of time. So as we prepare to set sail, dear reader, let's quickly bring the journal up to speed. We left off in Cairo after returning from the Sahara, from where I boarded an overnight sleeper train for the journey south to Upper Egypt, and my first port ... read more

Week 4 The last week of Sunshine! With the children this week we finished off the scene of the Nile, coloured pictures of a donkey, a camel and a man, a house and some boats and a lot of fish! That was part of the project to decorate the place for the meeting in the UK. We also made some cats, lizards and some mosques. We had some new comers to the class, some of the younger kids, called marawan, Gomaa and Hanan. other activities that week were making necklaces out of cut up tubes, which the kids loved because they could take them away with them. They made a bird and stuck feathers on it. It was so lovely because Hasim loved doing that, he made four! and he is usually the naughtiest one! We ... read more

This morning it was decided that we will move to the Winter Palace resort which is across the street from the ship. It is the nicest resort in Luxor. Not a bad deal!! As we walked through the various ships to get to the dock, I took a picture of each ship's lobby. Some of them are gorgeous. We spent the afternoon hanging out at the resort. I sat down by the pool since it was a beautiful day. Tomorrow we are to be ready to go to the Luxor airport at 5:30am.... read more

I've been home awhile but want to capture the final days in Luxor. On Monday, we took the bus to the Karnak Temple. This was the largest of the all the temples we visited. The Street of Sphinx that started at the Luxor Temple ends here at Karnak Temple. There were military trucks by the entrance. As we approached the first pylon (entrance) there was new excavation going on. They found bath houses. The pictures show 2 sets of round rooms with individual bath tubs in them. One was for men and one for women. The temple was amazing. This temple has the longest hall in all of the temples in Egypt. The Spy Who Loved Me was filmed in the hall. There is an area with column built to represent a Thicket of Papyrus. We ... read more

Things are not settling down in Cairo. The tour company is keeping our guide informed as much as possible for now. Wake up call came at 5am. We were to have breakfast and be ready at 6am to get in some tours in the morning. They want us back to the ship before afternoon prayers. We were to have an armed guard travel with us. I guess it was decided it wasn’t need and we finally left for the first temple around 8:30am. There are at least a 100 ships docked at Luxor. I don’t know if this is normal or not. There might be more due to the problems in Cairo. To get to the shore you walk through the ships docked side by side. Some of the rows of ships are 12 deep. The ... read more

Finally turned on the news last night. Internet never came back on, so no information there. Luckily, CNN was still broadcasting in our hotel room. Chaos in Cairo and Alexandria. Tanks in the streets, mass demonstrations, looting and roaming gangs in the suburbs. Reports of protesters and security forces killed. Mubarak appointed his former chief of Egypt's security service as Vice President, a position that hadn't existed for a number of years. Fears of the old guard staying in power have sparked the continuing protests. It was predictable to me. Yesterday's jubilation about the revolution seemed premature. Cell phone service returned, so I called my mother (who the hell knows how much that call is going to be) to tell her we were alive. She was, of course, relieved to hear our voices and said she ... read more
