A photographer's paradise, a cafe-lovers paradise, and thermal spa heaven. There are no boring bits in Budapest - everywhere you walk there's something interesting to look at or do; or something completley unexpected, like an art exhibition floating in the river in the city park. It's a bit like the best bits of Manchester, Paris, and Moscow all mixed together but is unlike anywhere else I've been. Budapest has unusual buildings (mostly baroque and art deco), each one unique and beautiful. There's a zoo, a permanent circus, the Danube river, vintage clothes shops, a layrinth under the castle, fantastic places to eat and drink, lots of thermal spas... I love Budapest and could easily spend a lot longer here, a great city to end on! Lots more to do, but during my short stay I managed ... read more

Baroque buildings, riverside cafes, and delicous (Italian!) food. Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia and, according to Greek legend, where Jason and the Argonauts dismantled their boat while trying to find their way back to Greece. Slovenia considers itself to be the heart of Europe and the point where the four European ethnic groups meet (Slavic, Latin, Germanic, and Urgo-Finnish). Ljubljana has a castle that you can walk or funicular your way up to, lots of nice little shops, a local farmers market, many bridges, and a milk vending machine where you can fill up your milk bottles any time of day or night! I also went to Lake Bled for the day, just over an hour from Ljubljana. It's beautiful to walk around, with a castle towering over one end and a little island in ... read more

The past two weeks have been a happy fortnight of sunbathing and swimming in the crystal clear Adriatic at Dubrovnik, Brac Island, Hvar island, Split, and Zadar. Croatia is a fantastic country and perfect for a bit of relaxation after lots of sight-seeing! If you're in your seventies and have just got off a cruise ship you'll love Dubrovnik. I lasted 45 mins in the old city which is full of expensive cafes, tourist shops, and people following their tour group flag. The guide books call Dubrovnik the crowning glory of Croatia, but I thought it was awful and was very pleased with the little beach 100m from the old town. As promised, it does have shiny white marble streets and buildings, but you can see these everywhere else in Croatia too. After two days in ... read more

Onto Mostar and Majdas hostel where I did a tour with Majdas brother Bata. As warned by other travellers coming from Mostar, Bata was completely crazy. It soon became clear why this was going to be a 13 hour tour when his introduction to the mini bus and what we could expect from the day lasted 40 minutes! Bata had an enthusiastic loud voice (think Doc Brown in Back to the Future) and he liked to talk a lot. He promised us a rollercoaster of a day, a reference to his driving and to the emotional journey he promised to take us on. When we finally got into the mini bus (complete with disco lights and a disco ball) he drove about 300m before stopping to talk to us about the new apartments and supermarkets which ... read more

I had a good feeling about Sarajevo on the drive in, and as anticipated it's a fantastic place and easily my favourite Balkan city so far. Once again its a small city centre, interesting to walk round with lots to see and do, and even more East-meets-West than Istanbul - due to Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian rule at various times in it's history, the city has lots of buildings from both periods. We were staying round the corner from the spot where Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in 1914 and a few minutes from Sniper Alley, which was the most dangerous street during the siege years. On Sunday we did a free walking tour with Neno, a student at Sarajevo university, who has lived in Sarajevo his whole life (email walkingsarajevo@gmail.com if you are ever in Sarajevo). Montenegro is a beautiful many-mountained country with a gorgeous coast-line. If like me you hadn't heard of this country prior to Casino Royal, thats because it's only been an independent country since 2006 and was the newest country in the world prior to Kosovo declaring independence in 2008. I was based at the Hippo Hostel in Budva for the week, about half way up the coast where it's easy to travel to everywhere else in the country within a few hours: Ulcinj near the Albanian border is 2 hours away; Sveti Stefan was a 2hour walk and then a 15min bus ride back; Kotor is 30 minutes on the bus. Kotor Bay is the 2nd biggest fjord in the world with some stunning views especially after a walk up the 1000+ steps of the old city ... read more

Another small city that's nice to walk around but felt like I could've been in any other European city - a cathedral, a river, trams, shops, cafes, parks... There's a fortress where you can get good views over the city and the Sava and Danube rivers. Spent Sunday afternoon cafe hopping in the rain with a Finnish girl and then back to the train station for the night train to Bar.... read more

The night train to Sofia was a surprisingly good night's sleep briefly interupted at 5am by the border crossing. Sofia is a small city, easy to walk around in a day with churches and mosques scattered between lots of normal buildings. The surrounding countryside is green, green, green which, along with the rain, reminded me a lot of Scotland. I spent a day wandering around the city and diving into The Russian Church, Alexander Nevski Catherdral, Natural History Museum, and a Paper Art exhibition in Sofia City Art Gallery to avoid the rain. The next day I headed out to Rila Monastery, a two hour drive from Sofia and even colder and rainer than the city! I stayed at Hostel Mostel which is excellent and deserves a mention - 8GBP will buy you a night's stay ... read more

May 2nd 2011

Last truck drive to Istanbul, a final meal, and lots of sad farewells over the next few days as we all go our own ways. For me, it was back to Asia for a much appreciated stay with Julia and Julian in Kadikoy, a boat and a bus ride away from the touristy side of Istanbul. A double bed and room of my own was a complete luxury after Galipolli and Eceabat beach and it was good to catch up on sleep and laundry, and to briefly return to normal life! I watched the Royal Wedding on Friday accompanied by Pimms, afternoon tea, and strawberries in abundance. Although a bit touristed-out, I did manage to see Topkapi Palace, the Grand Baazar, the Spice Bazaar, the Basicalla Cisterns, and many mosques. (I did however manage to miss ... read more

On Saturday we drove North to Eceabat via a quick stop at Troy. We put the tents up on a cold and windy beach next to Boomerang Bar where me and Holly shocked the bar man by ordering hot chocolate - apparently not the done thing at an Aussie bar where beer can be drunk at quick speed via funnels. Next day we had an Easter Egg hunt on the truck and then I strolled into town with Missy where we sampled an unidentified sugary snack (if baklava is pastry with syrup, this was syrup with a bit of pastry stirred in?!) At 5pm we drove up to Gallipoli for the ANZAC day dawn service. After finding dinner and seats, we had World War 1 music and Gallipoli documentaries over the loud speakers from 8:30pm until ... read more
