We ended our stay in Luxor with a mid-afternoon snack of self-made omlette, cunningly contrived to be eaten just prior to boarding the foodless 16 hour bus journey to Sharm-el-Sheikh, Sinai. There are 'quicker' ways to get there; for a heck of a price you can get a bus to Hurghada, and a ferry across to 'Sharm', and it only takes about 7 hours or so... however, the ferry only runs every now and again and we'd have been stuck in Hurghada for two days waiting for it. So, we took the 'straight through' bus... up to Suez on the west side of the Red Sea, and back down the whole of the East side, finally arriving at Sharm at about 10am. We spent one night in Sharm and quickly realised that it was one night ... read more

(K) Sinai..... Ramadan: one of five of the Islamic pillars of faith. The celebrations started back when I was in Suez. The pillar involves fasting: no consuming anything (including water) or have sex between sunrise and sunset (6-6) everyday for an entire month! Luckily shops and cafes are still open and in the tourist areas, eating in public causes no problems. I took a bus from Suez to Sharm El Sheikh, which basically went through the Sinai desert and looked rather unexciting, the odd bit of coast looked nice but apart from that... so no biking. Sharm El Sheikh is a slight tragedy. A beautiful dive and R&R spot of the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula but has been totally overrun by Western (and Russian) orientation tourist resorts and with it comes all the sort ... read more

heres a few pictures from life in Dahab. Only a few sorry I've been really bad at taking photos here. It has been a very interesting three months in Dahab. For those of you who didn't know I got a job working on the counter of a dive center. Very Random! I was passing through on my tour and I loved the atmosphere and enjoyed diving so when the owner offered me the job it only took me half an hour to day yes. It was very different working instead of holidaying though and I gave the job three months and have just called it quits. It's hard to describe my exact reasons for not really enyoing it. The job drove me crazy. trying to organise tourist and Egyptians at the same time was a nightmare. ... read more

I have spent the last 3 days in Dahab, Egypt. Nice relaxing town on the Red Sea. I been doing nothing but relaxing , catching some rays, eating some amazing meals ( the Res Snapper is great). Also doing some diving. I put in 4 dives in the last 3 days. the high-lite there was seeing a octopus and having a bunch of barracudas circling us. Very Laid back town, board walk lined with cheap resorts, restaurants and shops. Cats everywhere, Egypt is over run by cats. You sit down at a outside restaurant if there wasn't a cat all ready a cat siting on the cushion next to you, with in a Minut there will be 1,2 or 5.Just sitting there Wait watching you eat. Just so you don't think every day of my travel ... read more

Well after hitching a ride in the back of a truck for two hours, I arrived in Dahab, a quaint little town perched on the Red Sea Coast. West are the ominously stunning mountains of the Sinai, to the North is the small Jordanian border of Aqaba and directly East and just across the Gulf are the violently striking peaks of Saudi Arabia. A truly overwhelming panoramic view irrespective of which way you gaze. Dahab translates from Arabic to English as "Gold" and is reminiscent of what I imagine Ko Samui to have been before the massive tourist influx. It encompasses a smooth fusion of backpacker's mellowness and local's humorous and apathetic sales pitches, all set against a décor of craggy golden beaches under a rugged mountain backdrop and dark blue seas. Time could easily ... read more

OK 9.5 hours with 70 people on a 55 seater bus through the desert without air-conditioning, with one vomit prone very bus sick nine year old isn’t the greatest, but what do you expect for $8 AU. Yet I arrived in the Sinai protectorate of St Katherina around 8:00pm and headed for the 'Fox of the Desert' (yes that’s right Chock) Bedouin camp, where I shared a room with Jose' a Peruvian I met on the journey up. So after negotiating a deal for accommodation and dinner for two, for the grand sum of $1.20 Au per head, we stowed our gear and tucked into some traditional Bedouin food. After a short walk which encompassed the entire St Katerina town, sleep was the prelude to out 2:15 am alarm, I was heading up all 2,285 ... read more

The day trip to the St. Catharines Monastery in the Sinai region of Egypt was absolutely wonderful. We woke up early in the morning and we headed to the taba border crossing between eilat and egypt. There we ran into some problems crossing because we needed to get a reentry visa to be allowed back into egypt when we go there in a few days. At least the egyptian pound is very much so less than the US dollar unlike the Jordanian Dinar. Anyways, we met up with our guide and driver and we took off south west headed towards the monastery. Along the way we saw some remarkable sceneries and mountains located all in the heart of the desert during which our guide Ahmed told us all the stories from the Koran and Bible of ... read more
