Stuck in Horghada Leaving Luxor, I took a five hour bus trip across the Eastern Arabian desert and through the Red Sea Mountains to the coastal port town of Hurghada. This was to be a jumping off point for me to get over to the Sinai Peninsula, destination - Dahab, Egypt. I arrived into Hurghada Saturday evening and hoped to pass through quickly but unfortunately learned that the next high speed ferry across the Red Sea would be early Monday morning. I checked into my $7 per night hotel room and bided my time exploring the local bazaars and visiting the lone Western outpost in town, The Hard Rock Café. Again, like all the other towns so far, I seemed to be the lone American, amongst an array of European and Asian travelers, most of which ... read more

We did our first wreck dive today at the wreck site of the Dunraven (Beacon Rock) in the Strait of Gubal. The Dunraven was a British Merchant Steamer Ship which was built in Newcastle in 1873 by Mitchell & Co and was bound for Bombay. The wreck came to a halt upsidedown with its deepest point at 29.5M We started the dive at the deepest point at the stren of the ship and entered the hull swimming through the inside of the ship and exiting around the middle of the ship near the engine room Its very eerie as a lot of thoughts go through your mind wondering what kind of terror the people on board were feeling at the time it was sinking. Nobady died on the dunraven but it must have been a pretty ... read more

Started our advanced Course today The advanced consists of 5 dives, our first dive was a compulsory dive which takes you down to a depth of 30M, we did this at a dive site called Ras Kati, Steve Hinton was our instructor and before we took our first deep dive he asked us on the surface to do a short test including some basic questions and some maths questions. this was timed on the surface and then again at 30m below. The objective was to show us how nitrogen narcosis affects the brain and slows your reactions down. I did the same test at 30m and it took me 25 seconds longer to answer the questions even though it felt like i had done it at warp speed! Another thing when you at this depth is ... read more

Early start today, we all went to the Ocean College to get kitted out for Diving, our first day was a fun dive which consists of 2 dives from a boat ( Lady Garda) I was a bit miffed at the Ocean CLub as on pre booking the dive packs it apparently didnt include equipment hire which is a further 25 Euros per day for your dive gear. We all bundled in to a mini bus and drove to the port of Old Sharm where there is a huge mele of people all going out on different boats for scuba diving snorkling, glass bottom boats etc. Our first dive site was a place called Ras Kati, quite an easy dive and close to a reef blade with a shelf dropping down quite steeply to about 40M ... read more

My first entry to the travel blog. Arrived quite late last night to Sharm-el-Sheike, the Ocean Club hotel. Starting the advanced course tomorrow. Hoping for a late start today, decided to do some fun dives, all the trips are allday long. Meet at 8 am to get kit sorted and prepare to get on the boat. First hidden cost Kit hire (25 Euros a day). Instructor is thin blond dutch girl, not too bothered about cost of kit hire. Then get given dive master who is extremly ripped Egyptian guy, start thinking about kit hire again. The boats are really comfortable, nice sun lounging bit out the front and shaded bit out the back. Cabbin down stairs. Sweet. Had a little kip in the morning, then great diving. Amazing visability and loads of fish life, won't ... read more

by far the clearest water I have ever snorkled in, and the coral and fish were amazing too! Dahab is a little Diving town on the coast of the Sinai region up in the north of Egypt, perfectly set up for relaxing and exploring the magical underwater world of the Red Sea. We stayed for a few days and just read books, snorkled and treated ourselves to the cheap, quality food you find in all the restaurants along the waterfront. everyone in the world would love this place, without a doubt. After a good few days of doing nothing, our batteries were recharged and we headed south to what we soon found out was the real Egypt. Luxor the destination, a city on the edge of the Nile river with a couple big old Temples, the ... read more

I needed to get out of Cairo, if even for just a weekend. Emily was off to Dahab to finish her diving certification, and Mallory, Heather, and I were tagging along in hopes of getting some well needed relaxation. Words too soon spoken, I guess. The bus we rode in was anything but relaxing, as it was almost an hour late, took three hours longer to get to Dahab than we were told, and played the Quran at full echoey blast until Iftar. We got into town at 1am, and much to our dismay, the car that was supposed to pick us up to take us to our hotel wasn't there- only a pick up truck and several shady looking guys pestering us about where we were headed. A short phone call to our hostel directed ... read more

So here it is, my final blog of Kevin's Middle East Vacation 2006, summarizing my time in the fabulous town of Dahab, on the Egyption Sinai coastline. This is actually the second time I've been here, the first being last year, as part of my three week trip through Egypt. The main reason I came back is becuase the first time around I was not a good enough diver to do any of the really good diving sites, but this year I am. As such, this final portion of my trip was intended primarily as a diving vacation to Dahab and the surrounding area. But anyway, to pick up from where I left off in Israel, I spent the night in Eilat, then got up early in the morning to cross the border into Egypt. The ... read more

The final leg of our journey was in Dahab, a diving paradise in the Red Sea. Taz and I decided we couldn't really wish for a better dive site then the Red Sea to get our Advanced Open water qualifications.. So for 2 days, we dived ourselves into a coma - really beautiful - particularly the blue hole and canyon, and explored an entirely different type of aquatic life. Lionfish abound with the ragged tooth sharks being largely absent; replaced by new coral formations and a refreshingly varied underwater menagerie. Had James, Rich and Raiman and Olie with us which made a really fun and exciting group! what lovely friends! To all the dive enthusiasts, although there are lots of tourists, the red sea is a definate must!... read more
