i don't think i can describe Cairo, u have to see it for yourself, this city is crazy! i arrived wednesday morning, was so glad to see my friend we talked all night so i managed 50h without sleep. i was knackered. it was quite hot but not as much as i thought. they all said i brought the london weather with me. i had to sleep all day then we went for a nice and very very cheap meal in a italian restaurant. i know i should be ashamed but it was so cheap and so good. we then went to the Hard Rock Cafe at the haytt hotel for a drink but it wasn't busy so we left. the next day i went to visit Islamic Cairo all my myself while my friend was ... read more

Sunday, June 10, Dahab is a city which grew up around the Red Sea dive site “The Blue Hole” It became famous and busy, frequented mostly by divers and backpackers, and was apparently a place where a cheap good time was available, along with cheap drugs as well. Last April a bomb went off in Dahab and tourism is way off, particularly from Americans, who are so noticeably absent that merchants frequently asked us why there were so few American tourists compared with previous years. I guess the predominant tourist these days is Russian or German. We haven’t seen a whole lot of other tourists, either. And there are 20 or so restaurants with cushioned seats right on the water ready to serve you fresh sea bass, calimari, snapper and shrimp at prices which will ... read more

. Leaving Dahab. It wasn't easy, having spent more time then I allotted for, and especially after a failed attempt to extend it by a day, cutting off one day in Luxor. During the lazy days of Dahab I toyed with the idea of just skipping Luxor all together, avoiding the heat, and the crowds of packaged tourist. My logic was, the ruins have been there for a few thousands years, probably not going to go anywhere in my life time, unlike the Red Sea and it's coral and aquatic life. I had received mixed reviews on Luxor. Hot. Touristy. Hot. Tons of street hustlers, but figured to come all the way to Egypt and not pay it a couple of days visit wouldn't be wise. I figured I'd kick myself in the end. As far ... read more

Dahab, Egypt June 8, 2007 We arrived today in Dahab, a resort city East of Mt. Sinai on the Red Sea. From Luxor we drove 4 hours or so North to Hurghada, another rapidly growing resort. The desert along this stretch of the Red Sea is filled with new condos, new hotels, and new apartments. It has been described as ugly by those who prefer a deserted beach, but I imagine the locals here see this as a tremendous opportunity for jobs and prosperity. No pressure here to dress conservatively, as tourists in shorts and beachware are everywhere. Food is cheap even by Egyptian standards As always, we have been treated very well every where we go; the people here speak a little english, and they all love the tourists and the money they bring. ... read more

And the news from Dahab continues. First off - The diving. It's been AMAZING. I finished up my open water cert, with a couple from Australia. We had so much fun, and saw sooo many cool things we decided to do the advance course which lets you go to 100 feet, and also gets you to some amazing sites in the Dahab area. We had a different instructor for this part of the course. He was a very stocky man named Akmed, who resembled a general or someone from the army. He was kind of like the local dive hero, known by all, which was nice especially when you can slide through the various police check points littered along the highway. For the final dive (and deepest) we to the most famous site in the Dahab ... read more

More from Dahab. So where did I leave off. I think I had just met a Brit who'd served in the marines in the Iraq and Afghanistan; the mess-o-patamia that we've created…you know spreading democracy and saving the world from Al-queda and the Taliban. I stayed away from the political talk (for once) and just kind of prodded at his experience in the war(s). He spoke pretty candidly of it all, which was a bit surprising, giving that he was in a Muslim country talk openly about killing other Muslims. What I have found is that Muslims in general are pretty excepting (and supportive) of other Muslim, weather they be from Indonesia, Semolina, or Palestine. A Muslim is a Muslim in their eyes. But then again there is that whole Sunni Shia thing. We'll just put ... read more

Blogging on. Last day in Cairo...went big at this hole in the wall Egyptian bar in a back alley. Some old "high rolling" Egyptian dude invited me to the table and continued to supply beers, and push cigs on me. This country smokes like you wouldn't believe. From there we made our way to this Belly dancing bar/club - It's about as provocative as it gets in a Muslim country. Honestly, I have seen more skin exposed on Fox after 8 pm. It was pretty cool though, as I was the only white guy there, and a live band played while various dancers did there thing. I was even invited on stage, which is basically a way to get more tips for the band and dancers, which I was happy to comply with as i showered ... read more

Again, let me begin by saying...WOW! It just never ceases to amaze me how amazing life is. I know I've gone to a good place when diving is involved. Three dives later I've decided to finally do my advance diving course. How cool is that that I get to do it here in Egypt!!! The price is comparable to Malaysia and Thailand, maybe just a little bit more. That's gonna throw a bit ok a kink into my budget but what the hey it really is once in a lifetime kinda thing. I was gonna do the dives anyways. Started out yesterday with the first dive and it wasn't awesome. For one my powered lenses were not correctly done. Bugger. Yep, that's my new favourite word - bugger! lol...picked it up somewhere... So then the ... read more

Dahab Our Arrival Dahab means gold in Arabic and this golden coast is the Koh Sami of the Middle East we arrived to Dahab accompanied by Mick & Sandra a mother son team from our tour. After a ferry ride across the Red Sea and a long ride in a crowded minibus we were led to a beachfront area covered in pillows and low tables with a fantastic view of the gulf of Aquba across from Saudi Aeabia after a minute we all looked at each other and laughed as Sandra said in her usual style " How lucky are we!?" here this photo attempts to capture the moment... I guess you had to be there St Catherines monestary After a hail (!!)storm yesterday in this sunny resort town we looked on the bright side because ... read more
