"Of all the things I've done before these are the things that make my life worth telling- http://faceofsouthafrica.wayn.com/

" I haven't been everywhere, but it's on my list."- Susan Sontag

We Decided....

a long time ago to make travel a top prority in our lives. The first time we went to Europe we came back and said "I have changed , I am different now. "And we thought it would never happen again.

Best Trip ever ( so far)

Then we went to Turkey and we came back and we said we are different now ,we have changed, and we can't believe it happened again.

The Back Door Philosophy

Travel is intensified living--maximum thrills per minute and one of the great sources of legal adventure. Travel is freedom. It's recess, and we need it......Globetrotting destroys ethocentricity. It helps you understand and appreciate different cultures. Travel changes people. It broadens perspectives and teaches new ways to measure quality of life. Many travellers toss aside their hometown blinders. Their prized souviners are the strands of diffrent cultures they decide to knit into their own character. The world is cultural yarn shop, and travellers are weaving the ultimate tapestry--Rick Steves

The Emel Tapestry

Funny how travel changes you. We make coffee with a colador and guacamole with a motar and pestal. We have birds named after Roman Emperors. We tend the garden with a machette and decorate with wall hangings and bric a brac that come with a story usually ending with "...and we had to carry it back on the plane!"

We travel to learn; and I have never been in any country where they did not do something better than we do it, think some thoughts better than we think, catch some inspiration from heights above our own.
Maria Mitchell

We need objects to remind us of the commitments we've made. That carpet from Morocco reminds us of the impulsive, freedom-loving side of ourselves we're in danger of losing touch with. Beautiful furniture gives us something to live up to. All designed objects are propaganda for a way of life.” Alain de Botton We arrived in Marrakesh in the late afternoon, we have 2 nights here with the tour. and 4 more with no reservations. After a fiasco at the tour hotel we finally taxied to another for one night only .. or so we thought. After a quick check in [View Full Entry]

We're looking for historic excellence. Morocco has been around a lot longer than the United States, so it has its history of these very lush mint plantations and groves." - Chris Morris Essouria was a beautiful seaside town but had lots of wind, windy enough to add layers . We had 2 nights in this town and we felt like we covered it top to bottom. We had a guided walking tour that explained the forts and the strtegic parts of the town and the contributions from the Portoguese, Andulcian and French. Then we may have visited or passed by all [View Full Entry]

"A civilization rich in types and models unchanged for centuries, ... ideas and customs, moral and physical aspects of mankind that are eternal simply because they have never changed .... But that it has survived until our own times, that we can see it, we can touch it, we can mix with its people, is a miracle that never ceases to astonish." (Andre Chevrillon, Marrakech dans le palmes, Paris, 1920). Weve spent a few days in the country & now are in Essouria, a town where surf & fish are the order of the day. We left our desert camp shortly [View Full Entry]

"Id like to sleep with you in the desert tonight, a million stars all around " Eagles Fez was a busy city that was both metropolitain and 3rd world at the same time. The medina , a labrythith of streets with donkeys sharing the path was an amazing array of sights and sounds. The new part of the city or ville nouve had a pedestrian mall and a promenade along the main blvd we spent 2 nights here exploring, people watching and enjoyiing finger lickin good meals. After Fez we drove into the dessrt to an Auberge in Midelt , it [View Full Entry]

The sidewalks here are carved, not intricate but artful enough to notice, swirls and lines , red concrete, white concrete. We flew and landed without incident or fuss and took the train into town, got a petit taxi to the hotel. As luck would have it our hotel was on Lonely Planet's Art Deco walking tour at midpoint. So after coffee and a nap we walked, admiring the buildings, a pedestrian mall and a outdoor chicken BBQ for lunch. The next day we got up early yo see the Hassan II Mosque, a grand building with a minarete built in 1994. [View Full Entry]

Christmas in the sand! Wow this is so cool! or hot rather... We decided to spend Xmas day with the birds, hummingbirds that is . We call our Rastaman driver and headed to the hills to a bird sancturay. He was excited because he hadnt had a chance yet to bring any tourists there and had been wanting to go himself. We arrived at the old house and was greeted by the caretaker. The woman who had orginally trained the wild birds has since passed but the place is well cared for by this man and his family. We sat with [View Full Entry]

is now located on Sandals property of their Royal Caribean resort. As guests in the flagship property we had privledges to visit . Today we shuttled over to Sandals Royal Caribean to see Kokomo now called Sandals Cay. It sports a swim up bar, a jacuzzi and a parrot. It was quiet & serene so we took a walk , a dip , a drink and headed back to the mainland. There we tried a different water bike but it was so windy instead of heading to Cuba we opted for the kayak instead. The water was shallow and we got [View Full Entry]

Today we took an excursion with Raymond , our rasta driver, highly recomended by our friends. He entertained us by playing reggae videos and singing along all the while pointing out the sites on the tourist trail. Like the newest, Usain Bolt's grade school. Accomanied by a story about how he gave him a Puma shirt years ago. We stoped for a photo op at Rose Hall Plantation , checked out Discover Bay where Colombus first landed ( Yes Jamacia is yet another knotch in CC's belt, he's been everywhere!) commerated of course with a bar called Seavibes along with an [View Full Entry]

The title is an old Jamacian proverb that basically means little by little we get the job done. We have realized it wont be possible to blog from this resort but not to worry, with pen to pad I'll get the job done. Today we did everything there was to do here on the resort. We sailed a small sailboat, tried a wave cycle , kayaked the beachfront, took a snorkel trip and watched the fish and the coral from a glass bottomed boat. I even played a game of Bingo on the beach. Today we also met the rest of [View Full Entry]

Ohh New York and her snowstorms . After 3 hours on the runway we finally set off on our 3 1/2 hour flight. The good news is I finally got to see what de-icing looks like. Basically they drive the plane into a hangar and a truck with a crane hanging off the top drives around the plane spraying green liquid on the wings. Woila! Now we go.... At the Sandals arrival lounge we were told Congratulations you have been upgraded! Our room for only one night was beach view with a patio. Needless to say it was not the basic [View Full Entry]
