This morning we were invited for coffee with Johnny, the son of the apartment owner, who wanted to share his insights into the must see sights of Istria. Johnny is possibly in his late thirties and has had MS for sixteen years. Johnny’s mum provided strong espressos to kick start our day, and the advice provided by him was invaluable, even down to the best restaurant in Rovinj and best souvenir shop.

We took the apartment bikes and headed for Rovinj to explore the Old Town. There was a cruise ship docked at the pier, and the obligatory farmers market was full of tourists in the main square. We bought some fruit to keep us going through the day, chained our bikes to a lamp post, and proceeded to wander the old cobblestoned streets leading up to St Euphemia Church, located on the crest of the hill in the Old Town. The current church was built in 1736 over older Christian structures. After visiting the church, we climbed the 60 metre Campanile (Bell Tower), which is modelled on St Mark’s Basilica in Venice. The views were over Rovinj and the coastline were pretty spectacular.

Walking back down the cobblestoned streets, we collected our bikes and headed for Punta Corrente (Golden Cape) Nature Park. The park is only a short bike ride from Rovinj, and has a few kilometres of pebbly beaches and rocky coves leading down to the crystal clear Adriatic Sea. We selected our little beach and spent a good three hours swimming in perfect temperature ocean water. The swimming goggles we had packed were ideal to explore the coves. I could have stayed in the water all day, but we needed to get to the supermarket to replenish our food stocks.

We had booked dinner for 8.00pm at Bookeria, a fish restaurant highly recommended by Johnny, which he said serves the best fresh fish in Rovinj. Bookeria did not disappoint.

Walking back to the apartment after dinner, we again took photos of the Old Town of Rovinj reflecting in the sea.
