July 13

A coffee stop in Ralston near the Suffield Military base started the day with a sugary treat. We than did a little freeway driving till we turned off at Maple Creek and headed south though Cypress Hills and then east to Eastend. After dinner served by the Pine Cree Regional Park volunteers, there were two evening tours which we skipped because Jack and Carol Body from the 2010 Tour showed up for a visit and we soon had a campsite full of people to visit them. It was great to see them but I am looking forward to another visit this winter when we can have them to ourselves for a one on one visit. (Greedy me)

Hay, hay, hay and a bit of canola too. We skipped the pancake breakfast that was being served at Eastend because we thought that it would be more sugar coated carbs. Turns out it was bacon and eggs and fruit. Our loss!

We went on to the “Ghost town” of Scotsguard, population 2 – Keith and his wife, who have restored a homestead shack, a museum and have a collection of cars. They were hosting a car show which we were a part of. We went on to Assiniboia, where the local car club was serving coffee and donuts and another car show. I visited the Shurniak Art Gallery while Earl checked out the cars, then we both visited the Museum. The town has a people mover, an outdoor wagon with seating that is pulled by truck to the various spots around town. It serves as transit in the summer time.

In Ogema, we took a train ride in a restored 1922 passenger coach to Horizon to tour a wood prairie grain elevator. The old elevators are disappearing rapidly from the prairie scene as are all the small farms and small farming equipment. Supper tonight was again a roast beef dinner. Delicious!

Cypress Hills
Did you go to the Cypress Hills Winery just outside of Maple Creek? They even have rhubarb wine, as well as low lying grapes that have been modified to withstand their climate and temperature. Beauty spot for photo ops............of course every spot is a photo op.........lol
