The View from Our Seats
This picture was taken from our window seat as we prepared to land in Shannon, Ireland. Very green! Wow, what an adventure it has become to get us to our final destination. I was barely able to get any sleep on the long leg of our journey over the Atlantic Ocean and what ever waters we crossed. My geography needs to be brushed up on. We landed in Shannon around 11:30am local time (3:30am PDT).
Passing through immigrations was quite easy and I now have another stamp in my passport, yippie!! After grabbing our luggage, and Robert realizing that his suitcases had been damaged in transit, we headed over to the Hertz counter to claim our right hand sided vehicle. They denied my credit card even though I paid it off before we left so I had to use Kara’s card (so sorry darling, but I’ll pay it off when we get back). The suitcases managed to fit in the backseat for the most part and then I went to climb in the passenger side seat only to find the steering wheel in my way, oops.
I sacrificed Robert first and made him drive on the left hand side of the road with its crazy left handed traffic circles. Note to the world: don’t send soldiers straight
Backwards Driving
Even though I was prepared for driving on the left hand side of the road, I wasn't tracking on the steering wheel on the right. I kept trying to climb into the wrong side, lol. to Ireland from combat zone!! The highways aren’t clearly marked and there are so many damn traffic circles that you can get lost while trying to get in a straight line! After much bickering and arguing and changing drivers, we finally found our way to Killarney. This proved to be another adventure because much of the parking lots required a fee and we had no local currency. So we found a grocery store and bought some cereal, milk, juice, and water so we wouldn’t have to venture out in the morning for breakfast. I pulled €90 out of the ATM off my Paypal card so that was a good sign. I have no clue how much that exactly in American currency. The parking lot cost us €1 and then it was time for some grub. Our first choice was The Granary right across the street because it looked nice and offered music each evening. After waiting forever and going up to get menus for ourselves, we finally left after 20 minutes of being completely ignored even though Robert tried to get their attention on several occasions. Instead, we wandered down the street and ate at a lovely little bistro upstairs
A View from the House
This photo was taken from the glass sitting room on the top floor of our new home: the Inch View House. We look out over the bay towards Inch. where the waitress was very pleasant and the food delicious. It took us a little while to find our way to the house because the map didn’t show any highways leading to Cromane so we were just guessing for the most part. The houses have no street numbers, just names, so we cruised along the very narrow road until finding the “Inch View House”.
We were greeted at the door by a little red-headed girl and boy who welcomed us to their home quite charmingly. Next we were greeted by Geraldine the mother and her five year old daughter Katelyn, another lovely redhead. We are definitely in Ireland now. The house is just gorgeous and very spacious. I fell asleep on the couch in the downstairs drawing room while waiting for Billie and Matt to show up. They finally arrived without having too much trouble locating us and then it was off to sleep while they wandered into Cromane to find some dinner. Oh how nice the bed feels after such a long journey.
